Holding Bottle on His Own

When should a baby be able to physical hold a bottle on their own and feed themselves? The only reason I am asking is because I want to make sure my son doesn't have any motor skill issues. He doesn't seem interested in holding the bottle - which is fine with me as long as its not due to motor skills. He is a very active 8 month little boy that loves to stand, bounce, rock back and forth on his hands an knees, etc. He is not walking yet but you can tell he wants to. Every now and then he will let go and stand on his own for a few seconds. I guess he is just testing the water. My son is visually impaired (legally blind) and is receiving services through Early Intervention for vision. Otherwise he is on track in all other areas.

What can I do next?

oh gosh, my daughter never held her own bottle, she just say there and wanted to be fed like a queen! she just like that relaxation. also i realized the bottles i had were heavy(dr browns) but when i switched to lighter ones(playtex angled), she had no problem but that was when she was on milk at a year.

Sounds like your son is on track just fine! My son never held his own bottle, and by the time he might have, we weaned him to a cup. This was around 11 months. Will your son pick up a sippy cup and put it in his mouth? My daughter is 8 months and has an easier time picking up the sippy if it has handles. She's not interested in holding her own bottle either.

My son did everything early: rolled over, crawled, and is now about 10 seconds away from walking on his own at 9 months! Despite all this, he only just started holding his own bottle 2 weeks ago. The key for us was 1)switching to a sippy cup (we use the Born Free with handles) and 2)laying him on our bed with his head on a pillow. He immediately grabbed the handles, and has never wanted us to help him drink again! We just lay next to him and keep him company. :)

Don't worry- he'll do it if and when he wants to. It's definitely not a milestone, though. He sounds very advanced, so I don't think you have anything to worry about!

My son didn't hold his own bottle, but held his own sippy at 10 or 11 months.

I never really thought about it, but I bet if you put the bottle on the floor near where he is playing he'll figure out how to hold it himself.

my daughter is 13 months old and will not hold her bottle. She like some one else who wrote in, wants to be fed like a queen. My daughter is very healthy, and has actually done everything early, but she refuses to hold her bottle. She holds her sippy cups just fine. but when she has her bottle I think she wants to snuggle and have her hands free to touch things, like her feet or my hands or her blankey. I wouldnt worry at all
