My son is almost 6 months old and has has diarrhea since Thursday.....Now he has horrible diaper rash. I have been using desitin and I change him immediately after he goes #1 or #2
I don't know what to do!! He screams whenever I clean him up and it just seems like it hurts him so badly. After I get him all diapered again he calms down, but it just seems to be getting worse!
Does anyone have a suggestion for a better diaper rash cream or something homeopathic that I can put on him? Today Im just going to let him be naked all day to get some air to his butt.... I cant think of anything else to do :(
THANK YOU!!!

What can I do next?

Ouch! Try getting an ointment w/ 40% Zinc in it, very often this is the store generic brand. Desitin, depending on which one may only have 10% zinc, not enough to help a really bad rash. Also, a 1% or less hydrocortisone cream in a petrolatum base twice a day on an angry rash works remarkably well! Best of luck!

Hard to avoid diaper rash if the diarrhea doesn't stop. When they have diarrhea, my doc says to avoid all fruit, veggies and dairy. Feed rice, pasta, potatoes.. lots of bland carbs. To drink, if your son won't take plain water, my doc recommends diluted Crystal Light, Pedialyte or Gatoraid (I know, artificial sweetener, but a few days won't hurt).

For the rash, as much air as possible. Oatmeal bath (Aveeno makes one or you can grind oatmeal to a powder in your blender). Desitin stings my little one when she has a rash. I switch to Butt Paste until the rash is gone. No wipes. Use plain water. Even the "sensitive" wipes might irritate him. I would rinse my wipes with water and that seemed to be less hassle than a washcloth. Or go right in the bathtub and rinse with water.

I feel your pain because I was in the same situation a month ago. No fun! Changing the diet worked immediately for me. Good luck.

Vaseline! lots of it! Also give him some probiotic to stop the runs. You can put it in a bottle of formula or milk. You can by powder from at Henry's/whole foods. It's the only thing that stopped my children from having the runs. Good luck

I'll bet it's a yeast infection. Both of my first two children got it.
Just buy an over-the-counter anti-fungal cream like Lotrimin or a generic brand (I bought the one from Target). This was recommended by my pediatrician.
I carried it with me in my diaper bag because it can be difficult to keep away if their tushies aren't completely dry.

With my third child, I'm experiencing thrush (a yeast infection in the babies mouth and my nipples). I was instructed to use Lotrimin on my nipples, even while I'm nursing.

It'll clear up. Don't use any powders. Just use anti-fungal cream with desitin over it, but try to make the tushy as dry as possible before applying and DON'T use baby wipes: paper towels with water until it clears up.
Good luck

When my kids had bad diaper rash, I would clean them in the tub, because the water wouldn't cause pain. Then I let them air dry for as long as possible. When I had to put a diaper back on, I would put vasaline on them. This didn't hurt them, other than pain caused by touching the rash, and worked much better than any rach ointment or medicine I tried. The only rash this didn't work on was a yeast rash.

I know your troubles and feelings! One thing you can do is draw a luke warm bath and put in straight corn starch in the bath. This will help take out the heat of the rash and help make it better. When my kids got rashes and they got that bad I would put them in that kind of bath and it helped!!! You can also use powder that has cornstarch in it also. You can do those baths up to 2-3 times a day!!! I hope this helps! Take care and good luck!

Try Triple Paste. You can get it at I think Wal-Mart. We have Kaiser so I always buy mine at the clinic in LaMesa. When my oldest was little she had the worst rash ever. It got so bad that we were sent to a spelicalist. When we got there they said that it was just a really bad rash and to use Triple Paste which we did and it cleared up in no time. To this day which she is now five if she says that she is sore or looks red down there after a bath I put some on. It just makes her feel better. My son is the same way. He can burn in a minute if he sits in it to long. So we just put some on and by the next changing he is cleared up. Now I do warn that it is not a cure all. My longest is so sensitive that nothing works. She always has some kind of break out down. We have tried everthing changed diper brands, creams, powders and none of it has worked. The doctor says she is just going to have that really sensitive skin and that it will pass eventually. Good luck with your little guy.

The diaper rash could be from the diarrhea--even if you have been changing him. Since Desitin is petroleum based, try Burt's Bees instead. It is Zinc only.

You may want to take him in and see if he has a fungus. If it gets much worse, it will crack and bleed and then there is opportunity for infection.

Letting him roll around naked for a while is one of the best things you can do for his wet tooshie! Good job, mom!

I think your on the right track with air. Also try Triple Paste (Sold at Target or grocery store). I also have purchased a large package of wash clothes so during high rash times I'm just using water on the bottom.
