I want to find something cheaper than what I pay for land line residential phone. Right now I have AT&T regular phone line and it only includes local calling only and I just don't find it cost effective for only local calling. I don't want to pay so much for their other plans. We have our cell phones but also a fax machine that needs a residential line. I've heard of Vonage but I don't know if it's any good. What about any other ones that you can recommend or have experience using or like? I don't know which one is good or not good. Any advice? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I use Vonage for my business phone and haven't had any real issues. The voice quality has been pretty good-rarely I'll have some static. It is quite a bit cheaper than the AT&T charges. You have to have internet service, obviously, so if your internet service is through AT&T, you have to keep that line. But if you have cable internet, that should work. We do keep one landline for our internet, from AT&T. I had a bad experience with another VOIP phone company-SunRocket. They were cheaper than Vonage, but after paying for a year upfront, they went belly-up about 2 months into my year, so I was out of luck. Our homeline is on the company that took over for them- Teleblend, we've had them about a year and that is cheaper ($15/month) than Vonage, but I sure wouldn't pay for a year in advance, just go month to month. Also on Vonage, you can get a cheaper rate if you don't think you'll use over a certain minute limit (I think its 500 minutes per month). Hope this helps.

FYI: If you have an alarm system in your house, you cannot get rid of AT&T. To my knowledge, all other phone services such as Vonage and Comcast are not LAN lines. They are lines which are connected through your internet service and will not work with your alarm system.

I only use my cell phone. I was paying $75 for phone and internet. AT&T has a plan where you can get unlimited calls but you can only make 25 calls a month and I believe it is $5 a month. They will not tell you about their cheaper services unless you call them to disconnect service. Vonage is cheap but be aware that they do not provide the 911 service.

I have Vonage and it works well for us. The only thing you have to have Hi-speed internet which I have with Comcast.
Vonage have so many features. The one I like is a get a text message when someone leaves a message on my home phone. I can always go on line and see who called my house and what calls went out. This is good when you have a teenager who is on punishment and left at home while you go the the grocery store. He thinks well I will call a few friends while my mommy is gone. Oh well I have news for him. I just go online when I come home and I can see if made calls. I have a special offer for 2 months free by refering friends. You can call 1-800-596-0875 and give them my vonage number ###-###-####. If you don't like it you had 2 months free of phone service. Good luck on your search. By the way I have an alarm systems and it works with my Vonage. I heard rumors that it would not work. Vonage even told me that it might not work. I had Vonage come rewire my line and my alarm, phone, and internet work well.
