Hi Moms,
I have a son who is 5 years old. He has a persistant cough. He coughs more at night than in the day. I took him to the doctor about two weeks ago and he gave me cough syrup but it is not helping at all and I am worried about what long term use can do to him. He does not have fever and asks like he is fine. I run the humidifier at night but I really need a good home remedy. Something natural. I've heard lemon and honey are good but I would like a good reciepe with them in it. Or another suggestion with natural ingredients that have worked for your children.

Thanks, W. C.

So What Happened?

I tried a combination of honey with lemon and the vicks on the feet and it all worked great. He slept easier with no cough. We all know when our children don't feel good, we don't feel good. Thank you to all responded.

I know this sounds crazy but I've heard that putting Vicks rub on the bottom of your feet at night before you go to bed for a persistent cough.

Vicks vaporub - on the chest and on the bottom of the feet. Wear socks.

Honey - 1 T of organic (health food store, not grocery store) locally made honey if available (from a local bee keeper) 15 minutes before bed.

My grandparents used to give me 1T of honey, 1T of apple cider vinegar, and 2T of hot water in the morning and at night. It works, but you have to put the fear of God in someone to get them to drink. Honey works almost as well and is not NEARLY as nasty.

The vicks on the feet works! I just got through putting some on my 2 year old. Coat his feet in vicks and put socks on him- he should stop coughing once he settles in for the night. I read about this on the internet a while back and thought I would give it a try. It works for my little one. This is about the 3rd time we have used this remedy lately. My daughter has had a terrible cough all day and no meds seem to be working- so after her bath I put on the vicks and she went to sleep easily. As for cough medicine- my personal fav is Triaminic night time cough or Delsym. Good Luck

Honey & lemon together works great... that is what my grandmother used to give us by the spoonful... probably 1/3 lemon to 2/3 honey
ALso, FYI if you are prone to allergies and can find honey grown locally, you can reduce allergies tremendously by taking one tsp/day.

This is an excerpt from a recent article published in the London Times regarding the effectivness of honey... link to the entire article follows. This has worked for my daughter and myself. Try to buy a honey made from local bees. There are a couple of local honeys available at Whole Foods and Central Market or you could look at a farmers market near you if these 2 grocery stores aren't handy.

"Natural honey is a more effective remedy for children's coughs than over-the-counter medicines, researchers say. A dose of buckwheat honey before bedtime easily outperformed a cough suppressant in a US study.

Honey did a better job of reducing the severity and frequency of night-time coughs. It also improved sleep quality for children and their parents.

Dextromethorphan (DM), the active ingredient in many cough mixtures sold in chemists and supermarkets, had no significant impact on symptoms. Honey has been used in medicine for centuries, not only to treat coughs and bronchitis but also to assist the healing of wounds. For coughs it is often mixed with lemon, ginger or brandy."

Buy a root of ginger, grate it and let it infuse in boiling water. The infusion served with honey should help with the cough.
Also, try buying Homeopathic tablets from Hylands (at Wholefoods or Central Market).
