Hi! I have this problem myself. I am a nurse also. It probably is a fungus. I have tried Lamisil, and it does work but is hard on liver, especially if you already take other medications. Don't waste your money on over the counter products. A podiatrist recommended using Vicks vapo rub regularly. I put in on at night and after my morning shower then cover with a bandaid. Be patient, it takes time, but it will work. Also, it can spread to other nails if you cut, or scrap the nail, or cuticle area and then go to other nails. Save that nail for last and then disinfect you clippers, or file to keep from spreading to other nails or family members.
From what I hear, toenail infections can be pretty feisty, and take awhile with regular treatment to cure. Have you tried tea tree oil? If not, use it at least twice per day (more if you can), and make sure you get it under the nail edge as well - a q-tip works best for this.
Still, you wont see results until your nail starts growing out (this may also be why the otc's dont appear to work). Once the nail has been altered, it wont change back :}
It's a toenail fungus. Only Lamisil prescription pills will cure it. And that medication can destroy the liver. You have to have liver function tests before and during treatment. I would just deal with it. It won't hurt you at all, just looks ugly. Good luck!
Dont waste your time and money on over the counter products. They dont really work for that if its true toenail fungus. I went to my family doctor and he prescribed a prescription to take for like 4 months. It worked perfectly. I think it was lamisil. Check walmarts $4 list online---it may be on there now.
Soak it in white vinegar daily. Any podiatrists tech can grind it to thin the nail out some.
Hi A.,
I have also heard about that Vicks Vapor Rub helps get rid of toe nail fungus. I just read an article though that said it takes a while to heal it. I will post the article for you from Dr. Gott. He has other treatments both by prescription and other home remedies. Hope it helps. God Bless You.
So, EVERYONE says it's a fungus, which in all likelihood it is, but, here is one more thing if the others have failed. I had what a podiatrist told me was a fungus, but after two rounds of medication that should have killed anything, I went back to the podiatrist (only to find he had retired and turned his practice over to someone else, anyway..) The new podiatrist clipped a portion of my nail and sent it off only to find that it was NOT a fungus. Imagine that. This is like 4-5 visits to 3 different doctors later. The last one told me to just deal with it, that my nail had just changed, sometime in the summer. So, Christmas time rolls around and I decide (despite my ugly nail, the big toe of course) to go to a Massage/Nail therapeutic skin place to get a body wrap and a pedicure as my treat for Christmas for myself. I was just talking to the lady there, that had been there, seen it all, and she took one look at my nail and told me what my problem was, without me even asking. There's plenty of nail polishes out there that will dry out your nails, then you have removers, sometimes not putting a base coat on your nails, etc etc that had done me in. Her recommendations were to always use the base coat, to help protect the nail, do NOT use polishes that have the glitter in them or ones made for fake nails, and to give them a break every once in a while, even if it's only during the winter when toes aren't showing. Not using the glitter polish helped immediately, as well as the base coat. My nail gradually improved the rest of the way and by Valentines-ish you could hardly tell. And that....is the rest of the story. Much thanks to Therapeutic Skin Center. She has since closed her shop to make house calls for facials and such, feel free to try her out in the Bham, AL area. 205-871-SKIN
I've heard that Vicks Vapor Rub works for toenail fungus. Google info about it to see how to apply it.
after you bathe you can dab the nail with vinegar or you may want to try hydrogen peroxide
good luck
God Bless
Hi, I'm a nurse and use to work for a podiatrist and when your toe nails are yellow and thick it means its a fungus. You will need a prescription medication to get rid of or else it will continue to get worse. Hope this helps you.
K.
try vicks vapor rub. I have been told by a couple nail people that it is a great anti fungal for nails..
