Hi, I live in the Katy area and was wondering if there are any other Katy families who are homeschooling their kiddos? My daughter will be starting Kindergarten soon and we really want to school her at home. My question is, what kind of programs do you use with your kids? And, do you have any materials that you don't use anymore that I can look over? I'm trying to figure out what would work best for me as the teacher and for dd as the student. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sincerely,
K.

Our company uses Texas Tech ISD for homeschooling and K12. Both of these curriculums are awesome. K12 is not accredited from 9th to 12th, so keep that in mind when making a decision.

I started homeschooling 18 years ago, when my oldest daughter was 5 and starting the kindergarten level. I have learned over the years that there is so much to choose from, it boggles the mind. I recommend going to The Homeschool store (on Judiway, close to 610/290 intersection). They literally have everything, new and used. Texas is one of the best states for homeschooling. Check out the HSLDA website to learn more about your rights as a homeschool parent. Join a local homeschool support group too, they provide great opportunities to network with other homeschoolers for field trips and other activities. (check out WHHE.org) Also, there is a great program for homeschoolers at Encourager church (I-10/Wilcrest area). It is on Tuesdays and they have classes for art/PE/Spanish/Creative Writing/&/Science.
Blessings,
K.

Hi, my friend just looked into how to get into homeschooling and the Texas Department of Education website provides the materials and more needed for homeschooling. She actually went and compared the books to what they teach in schools and they are the same. Which will be right since the schools are mandated by the dept of education. She said they provide computers, books, materials, P.E. items as well.
Also, what you can do is go to the different school websites that tell you what they are teaching at that grade level. I know Katy and Cy-fair has them. They also provide you with different websites to use as well. There are alot of different websites that you can pull off worksheets as well, type in Kindergarten math, alphabets or anything like that. Start with finding out what Kdg. should know or what level they should be on before the 1st grade and I am know you will be able to find out so many websites that can give you help.

Have you heard of Model University style schools? There are at least 3 that I know of here in and around Houston. Basically they set curriculum and give you materials and your child goes to school 2 or 3 days a week, then you teach/help them the remaining days of the week. Here are the websites for them if you would like to check them out. http://www.ucshouston.org/ , http://www.logosprep.com/ , http://www.legacypca.org/ .

They seem to be the best of both worlds. You don't have to search for the curriculum and struggle as they grow older being able to keep up with the content but you still get to be the primary influence on what your child is learning. Good luck.
