My child is in the 5th grade and she has about 3-4 hrs worth of homework every night. I just moved to Flower Mound, Tx. Is this normal for elementary school students here? I am a single working mother can someone recommend an affordable after school program that offers tutoring, particularly in math. Thank you.

I have found that amount of homework to be typical of middle school, but not 5th grade...so it may get worse next year. Is she concentrating on her work in an area with no distractions? And no texting? Generally the teachers will provide tutoring on some days after school. I'd look into that option 1st. Then maybe a classmate could tutor? Is the math at a level where you or her dad can still help? I'd encouorage her to do whatever she can on the weekend before, so that the weeknights have just the homework that pops up during the week....learn to work ahead on projects and book reports, etc. Maybe you could even ask the teacher to give the math for the next week on Friday so that she can work on it over the weekend. Not so fun for the weekend, but makes your week nights much easier and less stressful. My son has football games on Monday nights, so we ask for his Monday night math homework on Friday, so he can do it over the weekend and not have to start at 9pm on Monday night when he is tired and hungry. We moved to Flower Mound about 5 yrs ago and the reason for our pull was the schools. Flower Mound Schools are very good and yes they do seem to put a little extra on the kids. My 3rd grader is at TImber Creek and she brings home a packet every Monday and she has to return it on Friday. We usually will spend about 15 min a night doing homework. Plus she has to read 20 min a night. I would talk to the teacher and see if this was possible, but i agree with the one poster that said its probably extra work that is not being finished in class.
Everyone I've talked to says the older they get the more homework they get.
Hi M., My daugter is in 5th grade as well, she goes to Vickery, and she spends about an hour every day om homework but we have to stay on her to be focus or she gets sidetrack and thats when it takes longer, maybe a conference with her teacher would help figure out whats going on.

No it is not! My daughter is in 5th grade this year in the Keller ISD. On our 5th grade mini parent school night her teachers explained to all of us that the students would not be given homework unless it was reading at home or if they did not finish their work in class. I would contact your daughter's teachers and find out a little more about the homework situation. Good luck!
I used to teach in FM and the standard time to be spent on homework is 10 minutes/grade which means she should have around 50 minutes of homework a night. Is she getting her work finished in class? That may be the reason she is bringing so much home. Ask for a conference with her teacher and find out what is going on.
talk to your teacher first to be sure you are doing what is needed and not over doing it, my son is in 4th Gr but in the past when the home work has overwhelmed him the teacher was able to give us a break, she said that he had to spend 30 minutes of concentrated effort doing the homework then he could stop... she was fine with him not finishing all the work as long as he made the effort and understood the information. as far as homework for us now it, he gets distracted easily so our "20-30 minutes" often takes up to and hour to complete, then we have 20 minute of reading and 30 minutes of violin (required by the school, 5 days a week) and 20 words of spelling a week. (this is avg for my 2nd and 4th graders) my older son will occasionally have other projects as well but then the homework work sheets are less.
talk to the teacher and see if s/he can shed some light on why there is that much homework and maybe they can cut you some slack.

I have 8 kids and 3 of them did 5th grade here in Flower Mound (so far... :0)) They get time in class to do their homework but if they do not use their time wisely... they will have lots of homework to do at home. They do have 3 or 4 big projects in 5th grade but other than that, the daily homework should not be 3-4 hours long. I even had one in LEAP. Your daughter may be socializing or daydreaming... Talk to her and her teachers. Ask the teacher if she needs tutoring, they often offer tutoring themselves before or after school. Best wishes and God bless!
