my 9 month old developed a yeast infection resulting in a horrible diaper rash ....i went to the dr last night and he gave Travocort cream to be used twice a day . it made a little difference but still its hurting him a lot. since he is a crawling baby , its very difficult to keep him naked ....i cant remove the carpets as they are fixed . what can i do to avoid a lot of mess he makes whenever i give him a diaper free time ? my neighbour told me to use cotton panties whenever he is without a pamper but i think if i dont realize that he pee and the wet penty would cause more harm ? i have tried all the home remedies but nothing worked . he poops a lot but its sticky one and at times firm . its the bloody rash thats a prob .....

For naked time, my sister used to put a sock on her son when he needed to air out his bottom. It does not keep everything from getting wet but it does localize the mess.

since this started with a yeast infection, give him probiotics. His system is probably still messed up & until his stomach is back in balance he will continue to have issues with his diapers. good luck

Try athlete's foot cream or powder. Or simply look for an anti-fungal powder or cream.

You can get sticky pads that go over the mattress to protect from bedwetting. I think they are Huggies. I haven't seen or tried them, just saw a commercial in TV. But that should work over the carpets.

When we had a bout of nasty diaper, we did four things - special cream (not prescription because we couldn't get one prescribed, used Triple Paste and the red Boudreaux's), no wipes (baby wash cloths instead), all natural disposable diapers and Triple Wash in his bath.

After every dirty diaper I would run warm water in the tub and rinse him off. Then I would fill the tub with clean warm water and add the Triple Wash. I allowed him to sit in the tub to soothe his bottom. When I pulled him out of the tub, I patted his bottom dry and/or I let him air dry with him laying across my legs on his tummy. When the rash started getting better, I used the baby washcloths instead of the wipes. I would dampen them in warm water and then wring them out. I would gently pat instead of rubbing his bottom clean. Sometimes if needed I would put the Triple Wash on the damp washcloths for more cleaning power.

We did hours of diaper free time outside (backyard, old sheets over the grass), in the bathrooms or in the kitchen. He was walking but he was never bothered when he crawling around on the tile. We did not do diaper free time at night because he was getting too cold. We did buy puppy pee pads for his crib so the mess would be minimized overnight. I would recommend those if you put him in his crib with no diaper so it will be easier to clean if he goes. Good luck.

Put a towel down in a dry bathtub and have him play there (with supervision).
The towel's washable, and the tub rinses down easily.
Outside or in a playpen on a towel is good, too.
An oatmeal bath (Aveeno makes one) is soothing to the skin.
You can also add 1 cup of plain yogurt to his bath - skin loves it.
Liquid Mylanta applied at changing time helps neutralize the acid and will help his skin.

Thankfully my girls didn't get a diaper rash often and neither ever had a yeast infection. My oldest did get the occasional rash and when she got one she got it bad :( Our DR prescribed a compound called Dr Greers Goo, (I can't remember the spelling but I think that's it) I know the name sounds silly, but it is a cream made by a Dr and it works like magic. The pharmacy has to make the cream. I kid you not, you put this gooey cream on them and the rash is literally gone by the next day...no trace of rash.

One year we were celebrating Christmas Eve at my husband's Aunt's house. His cousin had her baby a month after ours :) The poor girl had a horrible rash that they had been trying everything to clear up but none of the prescribed creams had worked. The baby was in so much pain from the rash she was just crying and miserable. I gave her Mom some of the Greer Goo to try. They were all amazed that only a few hours later the rash was no longer flaming red and many of the bumps had vanished. I put some of the cream in a ziplock for her to use until she could contact her DR after the holidays. She called us the next morning to thank us because the rash was completely gone.

Ask your DR about Greers Goo, and you may need to also ask a few pharmacies if they are able to make it. Not all of them can.

Peace and Blessings,
T. B.

Same experience with now 7 year old when she was little. Tried the yeast stuff and went to the doctor. He prescribed something similar to neosporin. That's what I used combined with coritsone cream and it worked great. Good luck, I know it's so sad to see your baby hurting. He said just buy neosporin next time and I continue to combine with cortisone cream with younger daughter when she gets rash down there. I agree that cotton undies work in conjunction. Also, vaseline provides a moisture barrier. Hope this helps.

When we had this problem our pediatrician's office said to made a paste of the same cream you get for foot fungus and butt paste. Equal parts. Also, I found that my sons were super irritated by baby wipes. Whatever was in them - irritated them more. What we ended up doing was rinsing out the wipes before we used them. I know its a major pain but even the ones marked "sensitive" bothered them when they had a rash. I read somewhere to take a 1/2 a box of wipes, put them in a lingerie bag and wash them in the washer to get all of the "stuff" of of them. I've used baby detergent so it was gentle and didn't leave anything behind. We then dried them in the dryer and had a huge bunch of dry wipes that we just wet with water. I used regular wipes when we out and needed them but at home used the cleaned version. Good luck.

Put down a tarp on your floor and then lots of blankets---keep the diaper off for as long as possible and air dry each diaper change. Put breastmilk all over the affected area and air dry. Then put the medicated cream on. Let him go in a lukewarm bath and soak then air dry. Especially if there is alot of poop or stuff stuck on him, set him in the bath and clean him off that way without scrubbing. Poor guy!

Oh boy. I can only offer you how to prevent this. I do know our society is fixated on baby wipes. Baby wipes should only be used when your out of your home, not at home. Insteas of using wipes, use mild baby soap and warm water when changing him.

I didn't give my son a diaper free time when he had his rash. I slapped on a huge amount of vasaline on the infected area to help protect it when he had to go. Every time I changed him, I put on a fresh slab of vasaline. It helped a lot. It protects the area while it heals from the burning of the urine. Also, use a cool wash cloth to clean the bottom as the baby wipes will sting really bad.

My kids have had the yeast rash before. The ped always gave us a prescription for Nystatin. That stuff clears up a yeast rash in just a day or two. You could see the difference in just a few hours.

I would call the doctor and say Travocort is not working.

try a diff cream if this one isn't working

give him air time when you can (poss use a cloth diaper for more breathabilty and less irritation

or

no diaper when you can put down on a blanket w/a plastic sheet underneath

buy some cheap rugs on top of the carpets so he can go free & if he pees.....it won't matter. Just remove the rugs.

Did the doctor say that you could use Desitin in between using the Travocort? I found Desitin to be very helpful for mine, but they never had a yeast infection, so I don't know if I'm giving you good advice or not. I just had to check their diapers every 15 minutes and get a poopy one off very fast.

I would definitely let him sleep without a diaper on so his bottom airs out, and that would save your carpets.

So sorry and I hope that this gets resolved soon! Antibiotics are so hard on us, aren't they!

Ah, poor little guy! I made a homemade diaper cream with mylanta, desitin, and lotrimin (used generics of all of those:) Mix the creams, then add enough mylanta to make it creamy.

Some people also recommend aquafor and mylanta. The mylanta take the sting out from the acidity of the urine/feces. The lotrimin is supposed to address the yeast issues.

Good luck!

My daughters both have really sensitive skin, so we're pretty familiar with diaper rash. :( What worked for us (and also recommended by our ped) is washing with warm water after every dirty diaper. Pat (don't rub!) dry with a towel. No wipes. I also recommend trying a different cream.

As for "naked time," do you have old towels you can put down? That way you can either just wash or toss....

I found the diaper rash cream mixed with a foot fungus cream worked wonders for clearing up the bottom.

As for "free crawl" time. If you can, time the diaper free time for right after you change diaper - especially after a poo. That could possibly minimize the likeliness of another poo coming in the next 25 min. confine the diaper free time to a certain zone or room and just set that time aside as time you won't be able to leave him alone.

Good luck. It is so sad to see your little one like this:(

I have found the best remedy is to bath them after each bowl movement. It is too painful to use wipes, and to even go near it with a paper towel hurts. Bathing it in between is soothing, it may hurt at first but it is soothing to let them sit there and soak, while keeping the area clean. Also, keep it coated with Desitin as a barrier for the. Our little foster baby just had one, at first the doctor prescribed it as a yeast infection but it got worse, she had to be treated with an antibiotic cream. If it isn't improving quickly he may need something stronger, so call the doctor back, because it can turn to staph and spread worse. With the antibiotic cream and bathing her constantly the first day it improved overnight. You can also use Neosporin, doc said it will work as well. Good luck!!

The best remedy I ever found was recommended to me by my SIL (a nurse). My son had had a nasty case of Rotavirus and was raw from the diarrhea. It may not work as well if you aren't having a diarrhea issue, but you can always try it, or store it in your memory banks for a future diarrhea event. ;)

Toss the baby wipes and just use a soft wet washcloth. Then using a cotton ball, apply mylanta to his bottom. It is liquid, so easy to apply--no "rubbing" required where it is raw and painful. After it dries, you can apply creams over it if you want, but the mylanta neutralizes the acids in the poo so it never gets a chance to cause irritation. (Do NOT give it to them orally!!! Apply it to their bottom, externally only).

That, and let him air dry as much as possible.
:)

Good luck.

Corn starch all over my babies butt was a life saver for her. She had a horrible diaper rash that was bumpy and red and she SCREAMED when I changed her diaper. It was awful. MY husband's mom, in Mexico, told me to get a box of corn starch and just shake it all over her bum. I did it after every diaper and in two days the rash was gone.
Good Luck!
