Hot Tub-worth the Money?

My best friend got one, and at first I was like "Well that's stupid, all that money and it will just sit there like the treadmill and a few other things"

It didn't, they use it all year round, even in 0 degree temperatures. Her husband and I were talking a few weeks ago and he said he wished he'd of done it sooner. The only reason they got it is cause my bestfriend wanted it.

Now there's was used and I think they spent $1500 and it was in really good shape.

look on Craigslist for 'free if you haul' hot tubs. If you like it and use it after 6mths then buy one. Depending on insulation and where you live it can add up to $90/mth to heating bills (6mths of snow).They can last up to 17yrs. Luck of the draw like owning a car.
Ours came with the house.We stopped using ours after 6mths now only when visitors are here and they think it's a novelty. I turned ours off and drained it to save on heating costs 3yrs ago. Other than purchasing water chemicals once a year and heating it's very low maintenance.
Do you regularly go to a pool to use their hot tub? if not start doing that first and see how often you make the trip just to soak.
Maybe u will use it for hot weather instead of a pool? Depends on your lifestyle and if you are 'water people'? (swim in the ocean or pool often, take long hot showers, enjoy happy hour chats!).
It's a big investment. Don't impulse buy

We bought our first one 13 years ago. That one had a leak so instead of having it repaired we bought a new one last year because the technology is just so much better now than it was 13 years ago. Maintenance is easier. We use it in every season but the winter. We love it.

Our new one was $6000. (Our old one was $6000 too) You want one that has great insulation and a great cover so you don't spend a fortune heating it. Don't forget the other initial cost associate with it...poured concrete pad with footers or decking that can support the weight when filled with water, an electrician will need to wire it too etc.

Guess you won't know till you try it.
Some people use it all the time while others hardly use it after the novelty wears off.
Our neighbors have a pool - it's open May through Oct.
They use it a few times a month.
During high summer (lot's of 90 degree weather), the water gets too warm to be refreshing.
Their dog really loves it and uses it more than they do.

I don't have one and can't afford one but the question I would be asking yourself is the following:

a.) Do you think you will use it often or is it a passing phase?

Living in Colorado? I would say you would use it year-round!

Upkeep is like a pool - chlorine, cleaning, filters, pH balance, etc.

We don't have a hot tub now- ours was with the pool my parents had.

You need to go to a hot tub store and see what you want - space - or some type of "party" area. They have HUGE ones that can seat 10 or 12...and small ones that seat 4.

We had one and used it a lot before kids. After kids, we were just too tired at the end of the day to use it. It was left here by the previous owners (it was only about a year old at that point), so I'm not sure the cost.

It requires a lot of ongoing maintenance. Chemicals have to be just right. It seemed like we were always having an issue of some sort ... engine malfunction, leaks, cover wouldn't open smoothly, etc. The costs added up to get things repaired. Finally, when the engine really died, we decided to just get rid of it. Posted it as a "free, you remove" and got inundated with requests for it.

I can't say I regret having it, but it did eat up a lot of money if I think back to all we invested into it. Be prepared for the ongoing expense.

My aunt and uncle got one years ago. They still use it at least once a week.

My cousin and I used to love sitting in it during the winter. I lived in Idaho then, so the contrast between the freezing air and the hot water was amazingly refreshing. :)

We had one that was connected with the design of the pool. We used it some. We never even used the pool enough to warrant the expense of the cleaning and keeping the water balanced. The pool came with the first house we purchased.

We've opted NOT to have a pool at the 2 houses we built because of the work, issues, and money we spent on the original pool we had. We didn't find it worth it.

As for a stand alone hot tub, you couldn't pay me to have one of those at my house.
