House Noises

We moved into a new house a few months ago. Three or four times so far we have heard noises after midnight. Like a loud bang like something fell, the other night it sounded like something fell in one of the bedroom closets and the closet door closing and latching. My husband checked things out every time and nothing seemed different. Does this sound like a new house settling? I am a bit freaked

What can I do next?

My friend was freaked about a noise in her house until I came over and pointed out it was the icemaker in her fridge. I would keep investigating til you find the source. At worst it could be roof rats, ugh!

Hi, Ann:
Don't worry.
Just ask if anyone is there and wait for an answer.
If noone responds just say out loud that everything is okay
that you all will take care of it.
Talk to the spirits of the house and reassure them.
Good luck.

Is it about the same time every night? If so, I would check to see if a heat vent or something run along where you hear the noise, if so then It's probably the heater turning on and the metal is expanding and becoming flexible. I wouldn't fear that.
If you are asleep when that happens and it's not the vent, try setting up a voice recorder and see what the whole sound is and not just what you hear while asleep. This can help eliminate a lot of things/open your eyes to different ideas of what it could be.

What kind of heating system do you have? If it has anything to do with water (which most do to some extent), the loud bang could be a water hammer - water in the pipes noise. I hope you get things figured out and enjoy your new home!

We've had squirrels in our attic. In the daytime check things out upstairs and in the crawl spaces.

New house settling noises are usually creeking... Is it possible you are hearing a neighbor? Car door maybe? Do you have a pet that may be making noise?

It could be settling. I know it took a while to get used to the noises our house makes. We would hear knocking sounds, enough so that it would get the dogs barking. It could also be that you are hearing things from outside, and the proportions of the new house distort the sound so it sounds like it's coming from inside your home. The last house I lived in would always get this humming/boom noise, at a certain time every week. It sounded like it was coming from our bathroom. Turned out that it was the across the street neighbors working on their house. We never worked out WHY it sounded like it was the bathroom, but meh.

It could be the heater going on and off, the humidifier on the heater (if you have one. Mine makes a loud bang). How about a water heater? Or a water softener? Any pets? It could be settling. After we had some remodeling done parts of our house settled a bit.
