For exercise, stairs, squats, and ballet are all great. Just make sure that you also do aerobic exercise. You've got to burn fat for the toned muscle to show, and you can't do 'spot reduction' on fat. 20 minutes of exercise that raises your heartrate every day, with 20 minutes of muscle building every other day (your muscles need a day between to rest).
Go to your library and check out their exercise videos. There's no financial investment so if you hate it just take it back and get a new one. Plus it's good to switch your routine every couple of weeks or it becomes less effective. I've liked Tae-Bo (yes it was 10 years ago but still), ballet workout, and Bellydancing workouts, they all work well to tone my glutes, plus the rest of my body too.
