How Can I Get Rid of the Smell of Urine?

I am almost embarrased to ask about this, but my son's bathroom smells like a horse stall. I have a very strong sense of smell, and have always been bothered by odors, but my even my husband said that the bathroom "smells like a public restroom at a gas station or something" Yuck! Help, please. Our 5 yr old has had some trouble peeing inside the bowl, sometimes missing the bowl and tinkling on the seat or the floor. But I have really tried to stay on top of regular cleaning in there, but it's still stinky. I have tried "green" products, and Dow scrubbing bubbles, and anti-bacterial cleaner. I have wiped down the toilet inside and out, and the tile floor all around the toilet. I am really at a loss. We have wall paper in there, and I supposed it's possible there could be some sprinkle on the wall, but I'm not sure how to clean the wall paper. Or could it be somehow absorbed into the baseboards or into the tile grout? Unfortunately, our 18 month old is always trying to play in the potty water, so we have to keep the door shut all the time. And it's an interior bathroom with no windows, so it's always dark, and there is just a standard lame bathroom fan that doesn't seem to ventilate at all. I am wondering if maybe the toilet doesn't drain properly or something. It's awful! PLEASE help. All suggestions welcome. Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

THANK YOU everybody for your responses! We had to have the toilet pulled up off the floor a few years ago when there was some major plumbing work done, and the guy didn't reseal the toilet to the floor when he left. And stinkiness can emanate up from there. Besides the bolts, there should be a ring of wax or caulk around where it touches the floor. So we have to re-do that. First, I cleaned with the enzyme product from the pet store, which came with a black light so you can find problem and then check to make sure it's all cleaned up. It was like acting out my very own version of CSI! <LOL> I thought the bathroom would glow like Chernobyl, but it didn't look that bad! And the enzyme stuff seemed to really work. I think I'm going to try to keep the door open, but put a baby gate in front of it. That should help air the room out, and thankfully my 5 yo can jump the gate when he's got to go!

Hi,

I have cats and use the urine products from the Pets Store to eliminate all types of smells. It has worked on musty smells, tobacco, etc. You can get a smaller bottle in a sprayer bottle and give it a try. You can use it on the walls, cabinets, floors. If you have grout, put some on and let it dry by itself. It may take more than once to eliminate the smell. But it should work.

Hi; There is a spray that is called Urine Gone that works great in litter boxes or any place a pet has gone. I am asuming that it would work great in your situation. I don't think it would hurt to spray it lightly on the wall paper. Some of the gift catalogs has it, I have seen it to order on TV, also some stores carry it. Sometimes it is in the pet dept. I remember my cousin when he was young when his mother got after him for missing the stool & he looked up at her and said have you ever tried to guide one of those things. Good Luck, hope this helps.

I agree with the other moms in trying some new products. But unfortunately if it did soak in the base board you will have to replace it because that will never go away. Good luck with the products im sure you will find one that works.

Lot's of great advice from the other moms! I too have boys that miss, (3 that are potty trained) and it is just gross! I used a black light to find the spots that I couldn't seem to get rid of. A lot was on the wall behind the toilet. I used a bleach based product but it really effected my breathing. I try not to use it but in this case I had to. ventilate as much as possible and use a black light to target your efforts good luck!

As far as the wall paper goes, you may want to try windex or another amonia based cleaner on that. Try it in a place behind the toilet or something before you clean wall paper that people will be able to see. There is a strong possibility that it may fade the wall paper.

Yes urine can soak into the grout, and bleach really is the best way to get the smell out.

And for the ventilation issue, have you considered putting up a baby gate before the bathroom so that the 18 month old can not get into the bathroom???

Good Luck!

I personally am adverse to using anything that has chlorine bleach or ammonia in it as they are toxic chemicals that are NOT good for you or your children.

White distilled vinegar works for cat pee, so I imagine it will work for this. You can use it straight or dilute it some (1 part vinegar to 3-5 parts water is good for regular cleaning, but you may want to start out with the straight stuff to get things under control). You can let it soak on the tile and baseboards to try to get any urine that has soaked into grout, etc. As it is NOT caustic, it should not harm your wallpaper either!

I keep one of those big gallon jugs of it around, as it comes in handy for all sorts of things (like cleaning shower curtains and shower glass).

Also, I agree with those that say you might need to have your toilet seal and drains checked. We had a shower drain that needed deep cleaning every two-three months or our bathroom smelled like a sewer...go figure.

I know all about getting rid of urine odors -as former owner of a doggy daycare for 8 years!!! LOL. Anyway, other than bleach- which is harsh, I have had huge success with Natures Miracle sold in pet stores. You have to let it fully soak into anything you are treating. It works wonders on all surfaces and in clothing, carpets, etc.

It might also be easier to keep one of those toilet carpets that wrap around the base. That could be washed in hot with a splash of Natures Miracle weekly and save the tile/grout from future urine soakage :-) You may have to replace the baseboards and wall paper unfortunately....

Guess this is what I have to look forward to with my 9 mo old son! Best wishes!

Hi S.,

I have been dealing with the same thing with my boys. I put a box of baking soda behind the toilet, which helps absorb some of the odor. Also, have you removed the toilet seat to clean where it attaches to the actual toilet? We do this at least weekly and clean it with bleach because the urine gets under there.

If all else fails, you may want to have the seal under the toilet checked. My husband is a plumber and said that the sewer gases can leak through and cause the odor if the seal is bad. We had to replace ours at one point also.

Hope this helps!

Smell your drains and your toilet and see if there is an odor coming from those. If so you have a problem. If not you can easily get rid of the odor. First off use Clorox for cleaning the toilet, sink, tub, floor, etc.....
You can use all purpose furniture polish or all purpose windex on your wall paper to get rid of odors. But wall paper will hold odors in. You might want to consider taking down the wall paper and painting instead. Get a potty chair for your son to use if he is to small to reach the toilet correctly. That would solve a lot of the problems. We keep a mix of one part vinegar to three parts water in our bathroom for a all natural room freshener. It works great and doesn't hurt a thing if it gets on it and is child and pet friendly. You could even teach your son to spray it after he is done going potty. Good Luck!

Hello S.;

I know exactly what you mean, we have 2 boys, 8 & 5, and one poor little 4 year old girl who has to share a bathroom with them :o( I can say that the only thing I use that seems to help at all is bleach, I know to some moms it is a very harsh chemical, but so is my sons urine, lol, and bleach seems to take away the smell, but only for a couple of days, then it's right back in there, and I have to do it all over again. Now my mom said that when boys go through puberty they stink like no tomorrow, so maybe this is just a touch of what we have to look forward to, yay, but you are not alone in that one. I hope this helps, you take care, and good luck cleaning.

Candi ;O)

Hi S.,
I have cat and 2 of them are male cats so I have the same problem that you do. Sometimes the 2 males get territorial w/ each othe and the walls and shower curtians get it.
If you are comcerned about the baseboards, wells and around the toilet it wouldbn't hurt to spray what I am going to tell you about around them & let soak in. I sometimes even have to spray down my shower curtians and the bottom of my chair as they both want to assert that I am theirs.
I get Urine Remival from the Dollar Tree. It works great & so inexpensive that I keep an extra on hand. ($1.00)
Good luck w/ this but I am sure that you will do fine.

I have used a product call AWESOME. It is only sold at dollar tree and some other dollar stores. I bought it and used it to clean up cat pee on bedding and other things. It worked amazingly on cat pee and that is way worse smelling, so I can only imagine it would work great for your bathroom. The great part is, is it is only $1. It says to dilute it, but I used it straight, and it worked. Good Luck
