How Do Bum Genius Diapers Work?

It's Friday night and customer service is closed. How do bum genius diapers work? We are looking at the "all in one" size diapers. Do you put a cloth insert in them or do they come with the insert in the pockets already? How many of the all in one size you recommend we have in stock?

What can I do next?

The AIO have an insert sewn in, but also have a pocket to add more inserts if needed. I personally prefer the BG pocket diaper, as we have both. The reason why, is with the AIO the sewn in insert does not go all the way to the edges of the cover. I HAVE to add another insert, or my son leaks through that gap. With an insert, they never leak. I figured I'm using them as a pocket diaper anyway...so we went with the pockets. The pocket diapers are GREAT night time diapers.I also like how the pockets are one size. We started my son in them at 6 weeks and he's still using them on the medium setting at 22 months. It saves money to not buy sizes. Just my opinion, though.

How old is your baby? For a newborn, you will go through them really quickly during the day. I'd recommend having 2 days worth, more if you can afford it. You don't want to go longer then 3 days without washing the diapers, anyway. We went through 10 diapers a day (and 1 at night) with my son as a newborn. He was formula fed and I've heard breastfed babies wet more...I don't know if it's true. If it is, you might keep that in mind. I would say to start with 24 and add more, if you need them. If you can buy more without it causing financial issues, you might go with 30 to start. Good luck!!

I use the Flip system (by BG) with my 2 year old daughter. We started when she was 15 months. We wil be able to use the exact same diapers with my second daughter (hopefully will be here within the week!). For the Flip diapers they are plastic-y covers that are one size (you just adjust the snaps to fit your child) we are still on the medium setting with our 2 year old and she is in no danger of outgrowing them anytime soon, but they also go super tiny so we aren't worried about them fitting the new baby at the same time. I like that all I have to carry around with me is extra liners when we are out and about, I also bring an extra cover just in case, but the covers wipe clean so easily that I don't usually need it. I haven't done AIOs or pockets but to me this seemed a lot easier. At night we do double the liners becuase our little one is kind of a heavy wetter and sleeps 12+ hours at night.
I also liked how inexpensive the Flip diapers are. I order from kellyscloset.com because with the Flip one day packs (2 covers and 6 diapers) you can choose the two colors that you want. Everywhere else that I have found you either get two pink or two blue. For my daughter I have bought 4 one day packs, so I have 8 covers and 24 diapers. I do diaper laundry every 3 days but I could probably go 5 days without running out of diapers. I just bought 12 Flip newborn liners and 6 BG newborn doublers for the new baby and I know I will probably be doing laundry every day or every other day for a little while. But that is really all we have the budget for at this time.
One of the main reasons we use cloth (other than the fact that our oldest was allergic to disposble) is how much money we have saved. When my dd was in daycare we had to use disposable and we were spending a little over $100 a month in diapers because in order to keep her from breaking out in horrible rashes we had to use organic diapers and she had to be changed every hour to hour and a half. In the last year I have spent $250 in diapers and don't plan on buying anymore any time soon! It is awesome!!!

We also have a BG diaper sprayer that a friend got us as a gift and I will say it is probably my favorite baby product that we own. It saves us so much time and so much yuck!

I know that didn't really answer your question, but I hope it helped you nonetheless.

if you're looking at the "all in one" (AIO) you are looking at the Elementals. The sewn in soaker (which is what makes it an AIO) is all organic material. The outer shell is made of PUL (poyurethane laminate) which is what makes it waterproof. It is one size (OS), which fits about 10-35 lbs (depending on the shape of your LO). Is this it? http://www.nappyshoppe.com/store/bumgenius-elemental-ones...

You will need about 10-12 diapers a day, depending on the age of your LO (the younger they are the more you need). If you plan on washing every other day, you will need 24.

Here's a helpful link to my local cloth diaper group's page, which has washing info, as well as different types of diapers.

http://dfwclothdiapergroup.weebly.com/cloth-diaper-info.html

I will mention that I have heard good things about these, however I have not personally used the Elemental. I have used the BumGenius pocket diaper and their old discontinued AIO diaper (it was sized and had a sewn in microfiber insert). They are fine, but not my favorite. But, I have tried a LOT of diapers, so I have others that I have found I like better. The BG's are great for my DH and also casual caregivers (grandma's) to use, since they have hook & loop (mine do, the ones I think you're looking at only come in snaps).

I will suggest you try 1-2 before investing in a full stash of one type of diaper. When I started I tried a few different kinds to decide what types and brands I like best before spending the money on a lot of one brand. If you prefer, you can have only one brand. But don't feel like you have to. It's perfectly fine to have a few of several types and brands of diapers.

If you are new to cloth diapers, one that I love (and think is great for CD beginners) is the Thirsties Duo Diaper. It is a duo size, similar to OS, but siaze 1 is 6-18 lbs, and size 2 is 18-40 lbs. This ensures a better fit. The inserts (one microfiber and one cotton/hemp) agitate out in the wash since there is a pocket in the front and the back of the diaper, so no need to take out the wet/dirty insert prior to washing (like most pocket diapers). It's very easy to use, and super cute! http://www.thirstiesbaby.com/duo_diaper.php

I work at a CD shop and the Thirsties Duo Diaper is a huge seller! I have a couple and love them. My LO can even wear it overnight with no leaks, and he still BF's 2-3 times a night (with an added insert http://www.nappyshoppe.com/store/gflapper-™-insert-hemp-.... I'm actually about to get more and start using them as his night diaper.

Message me if there's anything else I can help you with! I've been CDing a little over a year, and LOVE it!! I've become somewhat of a CD expert and love helping people get started:)

They come with 2 sizes of inserts per cover. I only have a few, since I only cloth diaper at home. I would guess that someone would want 12-24+, especially for a newborn who will go through them fast those first weeks. You start out with the smaller insert when baby is small and move to the bigger one when baby is bigger/overnight. I've also doubled up the inserts for big kids overnight. If you don't have a utility sink, you will probably want a toilet sprayer for those messy ones, to pre-rinse them before the laundry.

Ours still fit our toddler and she wore them as a newborn, if that helps with sizing. She is in a 3 now.

I loved them! we had 12 but I stayed on top of the laundry, it kind of grosses me out to let wet diapers sit for 2days. yuck. as soon as I had 2 left I did the laundry. everything is seperate so you will put the insert in whether you use one or two. also look into getting the disposable liners. they are great for keeping the poop from sticking to the cloth. there are a few that you can wash if only pee is on it and get on more use out of it just dont dry it. also get yourself a removeable shower head. it is so much easier that way. especially if you have a wash tub its great to get the poop off right away.

dd (20 month) is still in cloth diapers but now in blueberry covers with the prefold and I use the inserts from the BG so its more absorbant. she was able to stay in the BG till about 13 mo she is a big girl 97% tile. So I needed to upgrade her size. gl
