I have heard this knocking sound outside, and never did I imagine that I would find that a little cute , but annoying woodpecker is living or doing damage in my wood beams. How do i get rid of him? Please help, cause it is loud. Thanks. I will not harm it, just want to scare it. I had pest control out a year ago, but someone mentioned the idea. Sounds good. Still looking for options.

OMG! We have the same problem! Everytime we get rid of one, new ones come! One pecked right through the side of the house all the way through the drywall and ito our bedrrom! I can tell you how we have gotten rid of them- email me at ____@____.com,net
Be aware that it is illegal to harm a woodpecker (yes, really!)
Get those blow-up owls & put them near where they are pecking OR put shiny objects (CD's, pie pans, etc) on a string and hang near the area. They are also afraid of snakes, so maybe a few strategically places rubber snakes?
Keep in mind they may be attracted to INSECTS in your beams--maybe you should get a pest control company to check if you have termites.
Good luck.
I hope you don't believe in shooting the messenger. The problem may not be the woodpecker--there may be bugs, that are attracting the woodpecker, that are doing more damage than the woodpecker is to your beams. Good luck!
woodpecker is looking for termites and other bug that are attached to often times affected wood. It may be time for an inspection on the wood beams.
best of luck.
The cheapest and easiest way to get rid of a woodpecker is to scare him away with a mylar balloon (like the type you see at the grocery store/toystore/party store for $2-$5) - just suspend it around where he is pecking and the reflections from it should scare him away. However.... you only have a wood pecker because he senses bugs(termites/carpenter ants/etc.). So, you probably want to get an exterminator to take care of that problem.
Good Luck!
