So What Happened?

I was given a dresser from a storage unit. It was wrapped shut. When I opened it there were MANY bottles of pediatric amoxicilan in it. It felt very sad as if perhaps a long suffering illness had come to an end and the antibiotics remained in the dresser that was left to sit in storage for a while. WHO KNOWS WHO OR WHY those drugs were there. I just don't want to pollute the ground water. They are expired; 2004. I will take them to a pharmacy. I considered pouring bleach into each bottle of powder, and wondered if that would make them ineffective.

you could call the local poison control center (not on the emergency line) and ask if there are any community collection events coming up. We recently had a drive by drop off day for old medicines to be disposed of. You could also ask at a local pharmacy. Some municipalities have laws that state how things need to be disposed of. You want to take extra care that antibiotics don't make there way to the water supply.

I don't want to sound rude, but why do you have extra amoxicillin? Isn't that an antibiotic? You should've taken it all and not have any extra. Unless your doctor did some excess prescribing. I'm really just curious as I've never had extra before.

Here is one option though I found on google:
http://www.greenyour.com/home/kitchen-cooking/sink/tips/d...

You can also ask your pharmacist, as several places are starting a "recycle" type program for leftover meds.

ADDED: Well that makes a lot more sense. Its still a little weird though that they just had a lot of bottles sitting there over time though lol

When I was at Walgreen's Pharmacy the other day, I noticed that they are selling postage paid envelopes for less than $5. Apparently you mail your unwanted pharmaceuticals and they (or some company) destroy/dispose of them.

Unlike the other gals, I have been given extra. I've been given practically a full bottle of extra. I know crazy!
I would take it to a family run pharmacy. I go to Walgreens and I see envelopes that you have to pay for in order to get rid of your prescription.

You can open capsules & mix in cat litter & then throw in trash. DO NOT flush or dump in sink.

Personally, I would just throw it away. I'm not afraid someone's going to dig through my trash for an antibiotic, and if it's sealed in it's plastic bottle, it's not going anywhere. I wouldn't pay to dispose of it or mail it in, but you might ask your pharmacy if you can return for THEM to dispose of it...but if they said toss it, then toss it.

Hi M.,

They'll break down long before they get into ground water if you just pour them in the dirt. Don't flush them down the toilet or pour them down the sink. They will go directly into our water supply as these type of things don't get filtered out.

PS...the person that kept the drugs probably didn't know what to do with them either :)

I take my unwanted medication to my pharmacy and they dispose of it for me.

I actually took a glass bottle from the 1950's, that said 'State Pharmacy' on it and in big letters and the skull face thing said POSION to my pharmacy, and they were all happy I brought it in...it still had quite a bit in it and I didn't feel comfortable just throwing it away.

You should throw them away in their original bottles in the regular trash unless your pharmacist can dispose of them. Do not flush them down the toilet or use them yourself.

I believe the pharmacy tech just told me to throw away the unused portion.

For the one above me, our last bottle of amoxicilan said to take 1 teaspoon for x number of days and discard the remainder.
