I just had a baby on may 23. I am breast feeding, well pumping out my milk and giving it to her in a bottle. I also give her formula. I was wondering how I could dry up my milk. I stopped pumping but got tooo full and painfull so i had to just pump it out. Ne advice on what to do. Oh i was sure also because i keep hearing about something that starts with an m. That I would get that if my breast were too full. What is that ne way. (Mastitis)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

After reading all your answers, I made the decision to try to keep pumping. I guess I was just getting stressed because my son always wanted me to be holding him which was making it hard for me to be able to pump. Now everything is going more smooth. Thanks for helping me out. Hopefully I can last alittle while longer. Thank You once again.

Hi P.,

Please don't stop breastfeeding!!!! It is THE BEST food you can give your baby.. Way better than formula!! Try to at least breastfeed for 4 months. Your infant would greatly benefit from it! Your breast will get full from time to time, but after you get on a regular eating schedule with your baby your breast won't get full anymore and they'll just about feel close to normal. Please just give it time. It will be sooooo worth it!!!

Mastitis is a breast infection, you'd have to be treated with antibiotics if you got it.

Having just had your baby May 23rd you are still in the "regulatory" phase of milk production...bascially your body is producing tons of milk just to make sure baby is getting enough.

Unfortunatly the only way to stop milk production is to stop nursing/pumping. Do it slowly cut back one feeding/pumping a day, it should take a week or so to stop producing.

If I were you though, I would continue with pumping/nursing it's SOOO good for baby, and it's healthier for You to, breastfeeding lowers your risks of breast cancer and ovarian cancer. And there is some evidence out there that baby girls who were breastfed have a lower incidence of breast and ovarian cancer as adults too.

We figured it out after I was forced by reoccuring yeast infections to quit breastfeeding my baby and we paid over $4,500 for 1 year of formula to feed him. He has also been down with every cold possible. If you can continue to breastfeed it would be much better for your baby. Am I reading that you have 2 now and one on the way? February Boy, May 23 baby and pregnant 4-5 months is how I'm understanding it? Hang in there !

you stop the milk supply by reducing the nursing and pumping.

If you normally pump twice a day cut down to once a day... and then if you normally pump 4 oz.. stop when you get to 3 oz.=-just keep reducing the time and amount you pump and your supply will slow down and stop..

just do it gradually and you will not be uncomfortable..

It took me about one month to wean my daughter and there was no pain cause I did it gradually..

When I had to stop breastfeed or should I say breast pumping because my daughter was a preemie and would not latch on – the Lactation Consultant told me I could do one of two things:
1.cut back slowly
2.stop completely – which is what I did. When you do, you cannot touch your breast or express any milk from them. And don’t let the water in the shower hit your breast. That will stimulate them.

It was painful at first and I leaked A LOT. But, after the first few days the swelling went down. I think I also took Motrin.

Breast feeding is not for everyone. It was very depressing for me and I had to stop. I tried it but it didn’t work for us.

Hang in there.

P.S. my birthday is Feb. 6 too!
