Hello All,

We recently moved to a townhome and it has tiled floor in kitchen, dining room and bathrooms. I am used to mopping old way - wet a small towel and bend down on your knees and clean. But for this big area I don't think that's a good idea.

I looked into swiffer jet and clorox mop but I think using those will come out to be expensive for me.

So I am looking for ideas from all of you - how do you clean your floors? Are there good sponge mops?

thanks
-A.

So What Happened?

Hello All,

Thanks for your responses. I think I will try the Vileda mop. I was surfing the internet and saw there are many kinds of mop. Which one should I buy: http://www.vileda.ca/en/mops/

I am also planning to get a broom in addition to mop. http://www.vileda.ca/en/brooms/push/smooth.aspx

thanks

I also use vinegar and warm water. I use it on tile, slate and hardwood and it's super cheap. Just buy a big bottle of white vinegar at the store and mix in a few tablespoons per gallon of water. It doesn't smell great, but the smell doesn't last long and it dries quickly. Happy mopping!

Hi A.,

Wouldn't recomment the swiffer jet. Works on wood floors, but not on tiles. But the swiffer sweep and vac is great!!! So glad I bought it. Perfect for the quick clean up after a meal around the (high) chairs. Works good on tiles.

But for the real cleaning I would recomment the Vileda mop. I used to have the one with the yellow "hears" (cloth strips), but they don't sell it anymore. It was a good one. When it broke I bought a Target brand (around 15,-)because it looked a lot like it. But if you want to come and pick it up for free, please! The "hears" of the mop stays very wet, so your floor stays soaking wet, so you can not walk on it for at least half an hour. I used it only for 3 weeks.
So I bought again a Vileda mop. The new version, with cotton "hears" just like the oldfashion mops, but with a very good system to turn it so the water is pressed out without touching the mop. Sounds complicated, but isn't. Works perfect. Around 20 dollars??? Or less. At Target, Kroger etc.

I just use a bucket with water mixed with a little "mr. clean" or something like that.

I Wouln'd recomment a sponge mop, i think it doesn't clean the grouts. Maybe I'm wrong.

Also, do you know you can seal the grouts? That way it doesn't absorb liqiuds and dirt. Makes also the mopping easier.

Hope this helps, I.

I have the same, and I use a machine that sweeps and cleans my floor, and the floor cleaner lasts a while, best way to spot clean daily, alot of work, and put down a big rug.

Well, my suggestion isn't any less expensive, actually more, but I've tried many of the sponge mops and swiffer jet, etc. When I got the Bissell Flip-It, I was totally happy. And, I was very adamant about getting down and cleaning the floor by hand before I got it. It was about $100 when I bought mine a year ago, but it doesn't even compare to the other methods. It mops and vaccums the water up, and it's lightweight. Maybe you could use something less expensive in the meantime and then save up for it. Your back will thank you, at least mine did.

Hi, A.:

I have a mix of tile and hardwood floors in my house. For the tile, I use an inexpensive sponge mop (less than $8 from WalMart) and a bucket filled with 2 gallons hot water and a 1/4 cup of sudsy ammonia. A big bottle of lemon-scented sudsy ammonia is less than $1 (also at WalMart). I like the cheap sponge mops because a) they actually work well and b) the sponge refills are cheap and easy to find. They also put less water down on the floor than the string mops, so things dry faster (a big plus with 3 little kids in the house!).

Take Care,
L.

The Vileda mop works great. You can get it at Walmart and it is not very expensive. YOu can also take the mop part off and throw it in the washing machine which will help cut down on buying replacements. I just have two that I switch out.

Hoover Floor Mate. It costs more than a mop but is well worth it. The little scrubber heads scrub the floor and the thing suctions while it mops. What's great is that it scrubs the grout and sucks the excess water up so that you don't have gunk trapped in between the tiles or in the textured surfaces. You can also use it on wood floors and laminate floors. It's quick and effective - great for Moms like me who don't want to spend all weekend cleaning the house.
