How Do You Find a RELIABLE Babysitter?

In January, I hired a local single mother who badly needed a job. The situation seemed perfect, however I soon found out she was completely unreliable. The one condition of hiring her was that my 4 year old had to go to pre-school 2 days a week, once she started, she didn't have access to a vehicle! I ended up letting her go because she thought she needed more money, but for what? She didn't DO anything but watch TV or play on the internet and she had to use one of my vehicles to get my child to school. I have found temporary care for both children, but until I find a permanant replacement, no school for the 4 year old!

This is a two part question:
1) How do I find someone reliable to sit in my home and actually DO something with my children (and maybe do the dishes or vacuum if they have free time during nap)
2) What is really a fair pay? I can't justify shelling out half of my bring home pay, especially when the person is in my home, eating my food, using my things, etc.

HELP!

What can I do next?

Hi J.,
I have a small inhome daycare. I charge 3 dollars an hour for kids over 1 and 4 dollars and hour for under 1. I am not taking any more kids right now because I am full. I think what you are doing is good. Personally, I don't watch any kids I don't know, whether its through friends or family. Word of mouth is a good way also maybe look through churches and see if they have any services inhome. Good luck.
Chris

Why not send both kids to a daycare instead of an in home placement? My son attends kindercare and they have a great preschool program. He also attends a phonics class 3x a week and a music class once a week.

I pay 188$ a week for day care, 100$ a month for phonics and $50 a month for music. I pay my babysitters $10 an hour when we go out. I know most people with in care home want to pay a reasonable amount, I'm not sure you can pay enough to make it worth someone's while and still get a qualified caregiver, without paying so much it's not worth your while.

Contact a local community college, see if they have a early childhood education program. What better way for them to practice what they are learning:)

A few years ago we had care in our home. We ran an ad in the paper. We performed several interviews...until we found someone we felt we could trust. In the interview we stated what was expected of them, and provided them with a handbook (much like what you get when you seek outside care.) The handbook was a great resource for both to go back on.

For our two, children we payed $250 a week. We also provided pay with three sick/personal days, and after a year one week vacation with prior notice. This was for providing care, housekeeping, and transporting to/from school and activities, as well. Of course, my school ager was in school full time. When summer came we payed $300/week.

J.,

Ask your sons preschool teacher. Maybe she knows one of the stay at homes moms that would want to make some extra money. She would already be going to the preschool for her child so taking yours would not be an extra trip. The teacher should have a since of who might be good.

Maybe ask around to see who others recommend. Maybe your friends or church family, etc know someone. And always ask for references about character and work history! At least two. Where do you live? Maybe a mamasource mom could give you a give recommendation in your area.

Dear J.,
I have a great daycare but it is 3.00 an hour for kids and 3.5 an hour for infants or its 18.00 a day or 21.00 aday. We do have to pay weather our kids are there or not or give a two week notice. But with a licsecned daycare you can write it off. She is great she does all kinds of things with the kids. I have a freind who teaches at the highschool and has given me some gals who go to the local college now. I pay them 5 an hour for three kids. the gals I have had are awesome too. Are there any moms that send their kids to your son's Pre-School who would be able to pick him up and drop him off? I know its so hard. Good Luck M.
