So I have a wonderful 4 yr old boy who is so excited he can write his whole name. He was out with Grandpa today who gave him an ink pen to write on a tablet of paper. Well when they got home.... He had also wrote his name on his CHAPS~!!! Brand new pair. I Have tried to use SHOUT... It didnt work. I called the dry cleaners and they arent sure either. Has anyone ever experienced Ink pen on Leather and what gets it out? I am open to all suggestions that wont hurt the leather. PLEASE HELP~!!!
I want to THANK EVERYONE for their help. I actually called and talked to a CHAPS maker and they said DO NOT USE HAIRSPRAY... its the worst thing you can use because it will just spread the ink and leave a greasey residue which inturn is just as hard to get out as the ink. I also read it on a leather website. I used Saddle soap and some elbow grease and it came out pretty well. Saddle soap is made for leather so less likely to have issues such as the breaking down of the leather. But an FYI for everyone ... Leather absorbs ink easily so the longer its left on there the harder it is to get out!!! Thank you all again~!!
As an older mother, I would offer this thought ... why not leave the chaps and writing just as is - what a wonderful testament to the joy of beng a child who can write his name!!! You'll wish you had them framed when he is older so it might be wiser to let them be than to try to erase what happened - they're his, he is precious and his little name *is* special, too.

When I worked retail we use to use Aquanet on silk to get out pen so that we could clean the garment and put it back on the floor. This was as Macy's. Spray on the spot and blot with a clean cloth to remove the ink. Use leather cleaner after.

Why waste your time and efforts to remove his name from his
chaps???
#1 He'll out grow them soon anyway!
#2 There his chaps and him writing his name on them just
proves they are his!
#3 Anything that will remove the ink will leave "white" in
the place so the name will probably stay but in white!
Enjoy you son and forget removing ink from chaps!

Hair Spray worked wonders getting blue ink out of light tan denim. Not sure how it'll work on leather, but its worth a shot.

Aersol hairspray did for me on leather couches--you might try a small spot
Have no idea on the leather, however you might try lemon juice, it works great on fabric and I can not see that it would hurt to at least try. Good luck
have you tried a magic eraser yet? i use the mr. clean brand and they removed a sharpie from our leather couch. it takes a lot of patience and it may take off some of the dye color so you will need to do on the rest of the leather to match. good luck

I have to agree with Bill. Any product that will get the ink out of leather will also discolor the leather.
Per the instructions that come with any better bag, all you really can or should do is clean and condition it with products made for leather. These will soften the marks, but not remove them.
I would try to use the leather cleaner you can get at Walmart. It might work so would not hurt to give it a try.

You might try aerosol hairspray... it's worked like a champ for me with a white dress shirt. Use paper towels to absorb ink once it has loosened. Good luck!
Hairspray the spot and dab the spot with a dry cloth it may take a few times to get it all lifted out but it works. Good luck
Yikes! If the hairspray doesn't work, or if it leaves a spot, get some leather cleaner. I saw my MIL use a product called Leather Magic on her sofa once. Some shoe polish may work too. Good luck!
Here is some good advice:
Try dabbing some hairspray on the spot to see if that lifts the stain out without damaging the leather.
A lot of people on here have suggested hairspray. Hairspray works because it contains alcohol. Just use rubbing alcohol and it will do the same thing. Also, you can purchase some ink lifting products that are for leather, although most of them will just contain alcohol so it would cost you less you just get the alcohol.
Begin by dampening a white cotton cloth or cotton swab with the alcohol. Don’t use a colored cloth because it can transfer dye to light colored leather. Work from the outside of the stain toward the middle by dabbing with the cloth. Keep the work area small – do not spread the ink into a bigger area!
You should be able to see the ink transfer to the cloth. Dampen a clean area of the cloth or get a new swab as you see ink coming off to prevent re-staining the garment. Gently, keep blotting away until the ink is gone. Do not scrub harshly as that can remove color and a layer of the leather.
Allow the garment to air dry after or between treatments. Once the ink is removed, treat garment with leather conditioner to help it remain supple and smooth.
Try hairspray the aerosole type.
We have a leather sofa and I once got ink off of it with Lexol leather cleaner, which we had bought at the grocery store. It will depend on the kind of pen though. I think I got gel ink out but not ball point pen or vise versa. One kind comes off the other doesn't. But it's giving a try.
You take a potato, not cooked. Cut in half and rub the inside on the pen mark. I saw my grandmother do it one time and it worked. You have to rub alot and use muscle but I have seen it work.
