My daughter is now 5 and as you can imagine we have a huge basket filled with hair clips, barrettes, pony tail holders, etc. Every day we have to pour out the whole basket on the bed and search through trying to find one's that will match her outfit. To be honest, it is driving me insane...it takes up a lot of time in the morning, which we normally don't have and I would love to know if you all have a a simple solution that will help us be more organized?
Wow! What a great response from you all. Thank you. I did a mix of things including hanging ribbon from a piece of wood that spells "princess" and then for all the rubber bands and small clips I went to the craft store and got the bead containers. This was such a help. Thanks again, K.

When I was young my mom made me a "braid" out of yarn. She took a ring-like a big key ring-and looped a handful of yarn through it, divided it in three and braided it. It's about 18" long. All the barrets, clips, ribbons, and even rubber bands can be clipped on it or wrapped around it just like a real braid. She hung it on a nail in the bathroom. We each had one (3 girls) and we all still have them and use them to this day.

For clips and barrettes, I took two lengths of pretty ribbon and tied a loop at one end of each. We clipped all my DD clips down the ribbons - you can do by color or style etc. They look pretty and you can see each one and take it on/off easily. They hang nicely from the loop and you can hang them from a hanger in the closet if you want to put it away, or from a pretty hook on the wall - you can even dress them up by getting a nice hanging hook - they have ones with the kids names painted on them or a ballerina etc. which have many hooks so you could hang different colored ribbons from each one. We don't have that many clips, so we hang ours on a small window in DD's bathroom which has a half curtain so I put the loops of ribbon through the rod and they look pretty hanging down and are within reach when we do her hair in the bathroom - you can also change out the ribbon to match your theme when you wish - ours is cupcakes and solid pink ;-). For the rubber band types, I got one of those metal rings from the drug store they sell them with extra bands - they basically look like a belt holder (metal ring which opens at one spot to take the elastics on/off - this loop will hang on any draw or just throw in into her draw but it keeps them neat and are easy to get off/on I think scunci makes them? Oh and for regular headbands, I ended up buying one of the display racks they have in the store - it's just a plastic arch sort of - don't know how to explain it - my DD keeps it under her bathroom sink and it holds about 20 headbands. Good luck and have fun with it - my DD loved to put all her clips on the pretty ribbons!

Hi K.,
I know what u mean,I have a 2 year old and she has alot of hair supplys. What I did was go to Walmart and buy a med size clear bin it was only $3 and I bought a small one for the hair ties and two tiny ones for clips and rubber bands(99 cent)and then I bought a small circle canister from the 99 cent store for the barrettes and put everything into the big clear bin.It holds everything even the comb and brush and detangler. It only cost about $6.00.

I know exactly how you feel. Our hair accessory drawer was becoming a real source of stress for me... I could never find anything and of course we're always in a rush to get out the door. Anyway, I went to Bed, Bath, & Beyond and bought a clear acrylic drawer organizer... I can't remember whether I found it in the kitchen area, or if it is meant for office desks. Anyway, it has a large section in the middle which I use to hold all the brushes/combs. There are 5 other sections on either side into which I separate all the other stuff (rubber bands, barrettes, bobby pins, ribbons, etc.). I put bigger stuff like headbands in the drawer behind the organizer. It has been a real sanity saver! Hope it works for you too!

I use those plastic boxes with compartments like for crafts or thread. Also my husband's aunt made us a wall hanging -- an embroidery hoop covered w/ fabric and a face painted on it and then yarn braids for hair. you can clip the barrettes and clips on to the braids in plain view.

Buy a jewelry organizer that hangs in the closet. It has different size pouches and the little inserts are clear so you can see everything! Container Store has a few! :)

I have three girls so I'm so with you on this one! We use a belt hanger (the round kind, not the peg kind) to hold the hair elastics. When they were small I arranged them in rainbow order so it was easier for me to match them. The little barrettes go well in bead or floss boxes. I buy them at WalMart, Michaels, or sometimes can find them at the Dollar Tree. They stack nicely in a drawer and I could separate colors to match outfits easier. Larger bows went in a plastic box or attached to a ribbon hung up. The hardest to store (still) are the plastic head bands. My girls are older now so I leave it up to them, but before I would store them in a small 'milk crate' -- the kind with the solid sides. It's about 6X8inches. Our bathroom drawers are deep so they work well.
Merry Christmas!

As far as headbands and things-my daughter does not like them-she only uses hair ties and barrettes. Hope this helps-L.:)

I have a craft box, cheap from Home Depot that has adjustable compartments. (Three or four rows and card slots to add 1 in. cubbies?) We use this for clips and small rubber bands. Then I have a draw with two cute shoe boxes that I labeled, headbands and pony holders. I have a ribbon to clip all the fancy bows that hangs from a hook that I made like PP stated. That way she can see what she has to match the outfit of the day. I actually have 2 ribbons, one for pairs of clips and one for the bigger bows. We have LOTS of bows thanks to grandma. :) This saves us from digging through so many drawers and makes it quick to find what we need.

My daughter loves her hair accessories and to be honest, so do I. I have a pretty ribbon hanging from the towel rod in her bathroom, this is where we display all of her clips. Then I have a pretty basket that holds the pony tail holders and headbands and a little jewelry case next to it that contains tiny little clamps and various "smaller" items. They are all displayed neatly in the bathroom and she and I both know where everything is for easy access.

I found a darling hanging thing with tons of clear pockets at Kirkland's. It was only $15 and is brown with cute big polka dots. I had the same kind of thing but the prior one only had about 6-8 pockets, this one has about 40-50. I got it a about two months ago, but they had tons. It hangs on a hanger that is attached and can be rolled up to go too.
01/02/10 - was at the Encinitas Kirkland's the other day and they still had the darling organizers.

Hi K.. You've already received so many great suggestions so mine can go with any method you choose. It really helps when you plan the outfit the night before. If you know what she wants to wear beforehand, try including the hair accessories with the preparation. Put them together with the comb/brush on a designated spot on your dresser (or where's convenient). Hope this helps :)

I use a bead organizer and it works great. You can get them at any craft store. YOu can use it to hold all of the small pony tail holders and baretts and then sort them by either size or color. It has been a lifesaver for us. My daughter also has a lot of big hair bows too. I just got a long piece of wide ribbon and a metal loop, (like a larger version of a key ring). Then just fold one end of the ribbon over the loop and glue or sew it. You will be left with a long piece of ribbon with the ring on the end. Now you can hang it on the wall and then just clip all the hairbows onto the ribbon. It makes it so easy for them to see which one they want without having to make a big mess. All this stuff can be purchased at a craft store. Good luck!

I have a six year old grandnaughter and she has to have a matching hair accessory for every outfit. Her mom has them all hanging clipped to ribbons from a wall hanging. She took a BATH wall hanging and tied ribbons to the hooks. It is really cute and practical. If you want some cute hair styles for your daughter

Hi K.,
My little girl has a ton of hair bows, barrettes, etc too. I went to Lowe's and got a plastic organizer that they use for nails, screws, bolts. It has a ton of individual compartments to sort everything and comes with a clear plastic cover so I can see what I want right away.

Hi K., I use to have the same problem with my daughters hair stuff, I bought those plastic divided trays with the lid that lifts up. Like the ones you can buy at Home Depot or Wal-Mart or really anywhere. They are in the hardware dept. to use for screws, etc. The dividers pieces are adjustable so it made it nice. Good Luck, Happy Holidays
I have seen people cut a long strip of pretty ribbon and hang it up somewhere, then you just clip all the barrettes onto it. You could also use muffin tins or ice cube trays and put them in a drawer.

Buy a tackle box, tool box, sewing box or cosmetic box. Anything you can close and has a lot of compartments. The bottom part can hold the hair brush, comb, hair bands and bows too big to put in the compartments.
Good luck!

I have two girls, ages 3 and 5. I have a cloth jewelry organizer with see thru pockets that I hang on the back of the door that has pockets in it with zippers. For all of the hairbands I use a a binder ring (from an office supply store) to keep them on and then put the whole thing in one of the big pockets on my door organizer.
Hope this helps!!

Divide and conquer. Group all same/similar items into groups (size, color, etc.). Using Snapware containers (available at JoAnn's and maybe Target) or Ziploc bags, put your groups into their "homes." Once it's organized, it should be easier to keep it that way. A basket is good to hold a few large things, but it is too easy to make it a dumping place.

I battle with that every day too! I use ziplock bags and divide everything up. You can divide by color, style, or item. I have all ponytail holders in one, plastic barrettes in another, metal barrettes in one and ponytail holders that have decorations on them in yet another! Keeps everything organized, I can see it all, and my daughter can pick out what she wants without making a huge mess all over the place!
