I am searching for a reading and writing tutor for the summer. But I'm not sure what is the safest way to find one. I won't place any type of requests on the Internet ( such as Craig's list).

What can I do next?

Teachers from your child's school are often looking for tutoring jobs for the summer. I would start there. Ask your child's teacher or former teachers if they tutor. If they don't they can often ask another teacher that they think will work well with your child

Look for established companies that tutor (Sylvan, Linda-Mood Bell etc.), ask teachers, your p.t.a., and other parents. I found mine through going to a teacher supply store and asking the owner/staff there. They had business cards of well known teachers/tutors that had signed up for summer tutoring.
Good luck!

Ask your child's school, teachers and other parents. That's the best way to get good solid local referrals.

Depending upon what exactly your child needs help with, you could consider a college student too, perhaps one majoring in education or in your case, English. They would probably be a lot cheaper than a teacher or retired teacher and may suit your needs just fine. You can post an add on the job boards at a college or ask around the neighborhood. You can even ask the child's teacher or front office, some teachers do it to make extra money in the summer.

On YAHOO....type in your city and type in dyslexia tutor.......

The reason I say this is that most dyslexia tutors have excellent , top rated reading programs. They teach the BEST methods for reading...a person does not have to be dyslexic to benefit from them. I am a homeschooler and I used "spell to Write and Read" . Great program. My sister is a Barton tutor. She used her program to teach both her bright children how to read.

We found ours by asking friends with children older than our own and asking our child's teachers.

Go through your child's school. The guidance counselors usually have tutor lists which are usually made up of teachers who tutor on the side, teachers out for maternity leave tutoring, teachers who are now SAHM's and making extra money.

Around here an academic tutor is about $50/hour cash

No need for Craigslist when you have your current school and staff as resources for credible tutors.

Good luck.
