I've traveled with and without a car seat but it depends on the destination and how you plan to get around once you're there. If you're staying at a hotel or resort and they offer a shuttle service to and from the airport, you can call and ask them to bring a carseat with them when they come. This works great if you don't plan to leave the resort and won't need a carseat at any other time. Be prepared to spend some time at the airport. 9 times out of 10 they forget the carseat and have to run back for it -- at least in my experiences.

The other option is to bring the carseat with you. It's true that it's a pain to lug around but you can purchase carseat bags with shoulder straps that help with this. It also protects the bag in the luggage compartment of the plane. Also, you'll check the seat right away at the airport (unless you plan on purchasing a seat for your baby on the airplane) so you won't have to carry it all that far.

If you're renting a car you can also rent carseats from the same company. This works well but can get expensive.

Enjoy your trip!

Maybe you could rent a van with the carseat in it already? WE have a chevy venture with a carseat built right into the seat, maybe a rental place would have one also, and I know you are able to rent carseats, just call around to come car rental places they'll give you some options. Even if you just get one for your older son then all you have to do is lug around the one for your younger son. They are really helpful at the airport with that kind of stuff. Also check out some family freindly websites like kaboose.com and familyfun.com, I am sure they have back articles about travelling with kids that age...

we just flew to arizona....our 4 year old is in a booster seat which we packed in a suit case and for our 18 mth old, we were able to get one with the rental car. actually it was free with our aaa card so ask for coupons! otherwise it is about $10 per day. you can bring car seat on the plane if you buy a ticket or you can check it in as a piece of luggage. we also brought a double stroller for the airport. this you can gate check which means you can use it up until you get on the plane.

be prepared for the security screening...it is a lot of work with two kids. one person is watching the carry ons and one is watching the kids.

Definitely take your car seats with you. You can check them onto the plane and they don't count towards your limit of 2 pieces of luggage. Also, for your 2.5 year old, you'll want to bring his car seat on the plane with you, so that you can strap him in while flying. Renting a car is the best route, so as to minimize the times you have to move the car seat around (in a taxi, etc.). Have fun.

If your solely using a plane and taxi to get around you donot need a carseat. It's legal to hold a child on your lap in a taxi. However if your visiting family and getting into any of their cars you will definately need carseats. And it varies largely by state. I just got back from Chicago last night and the carseat law there is 8yrs. and under where in Minnesota it's under 4yrs.
