How Long Did It Take?

I'm just wondering how long it has taken people to get pregnant once they've decided to start trying. We're just trying to pinpoint a good time to start trying...we're both 28 and pretty ready for kids. I just don't want to put it off any longer and then have it take years to conceive. So just wonder how long it has taken other women to conceive.

What can I do next?

My husband and I got married this past Sept. and right away didnt do anything to prevent getting pregnant. Then about five to six months later is when I started paying attention to when I was ovulating and taking the tests. Which by the way, are bunk. Harder than hell to read. So after using 6 of the 7 sticks, I finally gave up on them, and just found out a week ago that I was about 6 weeks pregnant. So it took about 5 to 6 months of trying. Dont try too hard and get stressed out. Ppl always said that once you stop trying is when it happens. And for me, thats how it worked out. Good Luck!!!

I was 25 when my husband and I decided we wanted a baby. I went off of Birth control then three months later really started trying... I took my temp & we would try when I thought I was ovulating. But nothing. Then one month I was too busy to take my temp every day and we didn't pay attention to when I would have been ovuating (6th month) and that was the month I got pregnant... with twins! So you just never know, everyone is sooooo different!
happy trying!

Wow M.- wish we all knew that one to plan. I know some who tried once- and Wha-la, others who ended with invitro after years and some never succeeding despite all efforts.
I'll give you a tip- if you take temps, your best chance is within 12 hours after ovulating. If it doesn't happen then with charting, then if you're in a hurry, seek help for timed insemination.
Don't take the fun out of it- enjoy the process at 28 and just go with it. If you're in a hurry wanting it right away and it doesn't happen, you'll get disappointed , start getting stressed and then it won't happen.

That's kind of a tough question...my youngest son and his wife have been trying for almost a year now, and are still trying. My oldest son and his wife tried once, and guess what, they are expecting in August, so there's just not a good answer to that question. If you're ready, give it a whirl...it will happen when it is suppose to.

Good luck!!!

When we first decided to start our family, it took us 6 months to get pregnant.
When our first baby was a year old, we started trying again and it only took 2 months. Unfortunately, it ended in a miscarriage at 9 weeks.
We waited the required 3 months, then started trying again.
It took just over 2 years to get pregnant again.
We now have our two beautiful boys (5 yrs and 16 months). I would like to have another one, but currently we are not trying.
Average time for a healthy couple to conceive is 6-12 months. Good luck to you!

I agree with the poster that recommends the book "Taking charge of your fertility" also check out any books on amazon.com under "natural family planning." If done well, you can literally zero in on the optimum day(s) you will ovulate allowing you to just about accurately plan conception. Know that it will be about two months or so, to learn your fertility signs accurately enough to do this through out your entire reproductive life, but many have been able to learn enough to try an conceive right away.

You could also go the more expensive route and purchase a fertility /ovulation monitor from the drug store, or try the less expensive ovulation test strips. They work like a pregnancy test. The downside with these is unlike fertility charting (nfp), or using a fertility monitor, the strips can only give you a "ballpark" figure of when you will be optimum. Usually a 2 to 3 day heads up of when you might ovulate.

I was nearly 29 when we started trying, and it took us 22 months and quite a bit of medical help to get pregnant. Most women will get pregnant in 1-6 months, but still 1 in 6 couples ends up dealing with infertility. I would go ahead and start trying as soon as you think you'd be ready to have a baby.

13 years.

Seriously, it became evident after the first year that it wasn't working, so we tried fertility treatments and THAT didn't work either, so after a year of that we gave up and adopted instead. We stopped short of IVF - couldn't justify the expense for a "maybe" when we could take the same money and adopt for sure.

A decade later I turned up pregnant for no discernible reason (other than the obvious! :-)) I hadn't used birth control in all that time, so for some reason it was time now and not before. God works in mysterious ways, doesn't He?

Hi M.!
It is so different for everyone when trying to conceive. The best advice I can give you is don't stress out about the time it takes to conceive cuz that can make it harder for you. My husband and I tried for about 8 months with no success and finally we stopped "trying". After not "trying" at all and barely even speaking about it, we were pregnant within 2 months and now we have a wonderful 4 month old son.
If you are trying too hard and only have sex to conceive instead of having sex for enjoyment, sometimes I think your body responds by messing up your cycle and you may not be ovulating when you think you are ovulating.
So many of our friends tried for so long and it always seems to happen for them as soon as they stop.
Even if you are in the "trying" phase, don't just have sex at the time you think you are ovulating, continue to have sex for all the other reasons too and don't stress yourself out if it doesn't happen in the first few months...that pressure you put on yourself will not help.
Just relax and enjoy the "trying" cuz it is supposed to be fun too!!!!

28 was the time I started thinking but some upheavals happened so we needed to wait. We had a boy who is now 14 and just never got around to having another child. Tried for about a year when he was 5, didn't happen. We had 4 lovely cats when we had our son, cats were just no longer enough. : )

Hi M.! It took 1 month for each of our children to be concieved (we have two). I credit our success to God and to "Natural Family Planning or the Creighton Fertility Method". You chart your entire month and are able to pinpoint exactly when you are fertile. It also helps to avoid pregnancy too. We've been married for almost 4 years and we were able to plan our pregnancies/deliveries down to the month. My husband is gone so much during the summer that we try to avoid a delivery during those busy months. Natural Family Planning is not just for Catholics and NOT to be confused with the Rythym Method of the past. It was created by a Dr. named Creighton (I believe). Also, because I was charting I noticed that I was having a problem with my cycle and went to a Dr. that was friendly with the NFP/CFM and he told me that I had progestrone level problems. This was before I got pregnant with my second child. I was being treated for the progesterone problem when we got pregnant. What a blessing that I knew in advance that I had progesterone issues because that is one of the major factors in miscarriage in the first 3 months of pregnancy. I went in for progesterone level tests once a week and received hormone shots. Most people don't get tested for the level unless they have a previous history of miscarriage. We were blessed with the birth of a healthy baby boy. Had we not be charting prior to his conception I may have been one of the statistics and been heartbroken. I'm not trying to scare you, that is not my intention. I am trying to let you know the many other wonderful reasons to use the NFP/CFM. Congratulations on your decision to have a child and good luck with your effort. :-)

Start tracking your period. ...do you have a typical 28 day cycle? If so you ovulate around day 14....start "trying 2 or 3 days before you're supposed to ovulate"......

It depends on how serious you are on trying - are you checking your ovulation? If you are regular you can go to WebMD and fill out some information and you can print a calendar showing when the "48 hour" window is so you know when the best time to try is. Otherwise, you can purchase kits in the store. I used the WebMD and it took a few months - I thought for sure it would take longer but after 3 months of knowing when I was ovulating and did it every other day for that week - it happened. Everyone is different. They say after 1 year of no + result to go to the Dr. Be patient - takes time and don't get discouraged or you will stress yourself out. Have fun trying - it's the best part!! Good luck!

Hi M.,
We were 26 when we started trying. I miscarried once around 7 weeks. We tried again after a few months and it took about 7 months. Everyone is different though...our friends were pregnant the first month they tried! With our second baby we wanted to plan the pregnancy around a backpacking trip with our son and two friends that we planned for July. I had a very regular cycle and always marked it on the calendar. We thought we were 'safe' and didn't use any protection (esp. since it took a while with our first). On the 10 hour drive up to the Porkies i felt a little queasy (sp). On the second day into the trip i was walking off trail to throw up. I was 3 weeks pregnant and already getting sick! I waited until i was 6 weeks to actually take a test but it was pretty obvious. If you feel ready then just start trying. Make sure you are already taking prenatal vitamins as the folic acid helps prevent neural tube defects. The neuralogical begins to form 3 days after conception so it's best to be on the vitamins before you start trying. Good luck. L.

I never had normal menstrual cycles for that whole year so I could never tell when I was ovualting - it was kind of a stab in the dark and got very lucky. Everyone said as soon as you stop trying so hard and quit thinking about it that is when it will happen and sure enough it did. Good luck to you guys! It varies so much for everyone. I was 32 and 35 when I got pregnant with my babies and it happened the first try for each of them. My brother and SIL have been trying for 4 1/2 years. Given your young age and unless you have any known health problems that affect your cycle or reproductive system I would assume you are going to be pregnant within the first few months of trying so I would wait until you are sure you are ready (although I wouldn't wait years). With our first one we were very excited, but also a little startled that it happened so quickly. On the other hand, some people have fertility problems in their 20s, but most are older than that. Good luck!

This is really an individual answer depending on your own bodies, I guess. I thought I was unique until I read the two entries below me. I got pregnant on my very first sexual experience. I was 24. And three and a half years later when we were ready to have our second, I was off of birth control pills for only a month when I already knew I was pregnant. Needless to say, we did not take ANY chances after that. When you feel ready to have children, that is the time to start.

I read through a good chunk of your responses and didn't see any similar to mine. I was 28 when I married my husband and we decided to try right away (we'd been together for a few years already). I went off the pill and was ready to get pregnant right away like all of my friends. It took us 6.5 years before I became pregant. After several tests and even surgery to remove polyps and endometrosis, a new doctor said I had PCOS. At any rate, my advice is this: Go for it. If you are both ready, the sooner the better! Have fun, don't focus on it too much. We were in the final steps of adoption when I became pregnant (it also helped that my doctor put me on a medication to help with my sugar levels).

Start living very healthy(if you are not already) and start taking some folic acid. It will only help with conceiving and your overall health anyway. Good luck and let us know how it goes! I am having the time of my life with our 6.5 month daughter! And also, once that baby comes don't be surprised if your fur babies just become pets! I was shocked with that!

We were lucky enough to get pregnant after just a month of trying, but had a miscarriage at about 8 weeks. After a few cycles to let things heal we were lucky again and it only took another month of trying. Just be sure you have been off birth control and on a prenatal vitamin several months before you start trying to help reduce any risks for complications. My OBGYN told me when we started trying to have intercourse every other day starting at day 10 of my cycle. It worked both times and we now have a beautiful 8 month old girl. Best of luck to you!

Personally, I seem to be one of the fortunate ones, "Fertile Myrtle" so to speak. DH and I conceived our little girl (she's 18 months now) on the first month we "tried". I had been on Orthotricycline for 3 years before that, and had always thought I had "abnormal" cycles, because they were much longer than the "standard" 28 days...32-40 days long. Before we started, I bought the book others have mentioned, called "Taking Charge of Your Fertility", I found that there is a much wider range of "normal" than what we learned in Health Class, and I was doing fine! I also used FertilityFriend.com for my charting and printed the charts out for my Dr. when I went in for the pregnancy test - since my cycle was mapped out, we knew my due date would be 11 days different than the "standard" one they compute based on a 28 day cycle! Like others have said, it is a thick book, but easy to read and understand, and I think it should be read by every woman, before she is sexually active, so we can all really understand what's going on "down there"!

I stopped the pill and I started temping in January '06, we used comdoms for the first 3 months, to let the pill hormones get out of my system. I was charting my temps and my cervical mucous, and I even had one annovulatory cycle, in Feb, 44 days, but still got pregnant on my first month of trying, in March.

Then, when the baby was 9 months, DH and I got cuaght up in the heat of the moment and had sex without a condom (we were using condoms, not the pill, as I was still nursing), and I realized the next day that it was about the right timing to be the fertile time of my cycle - well, it was, and I was pregnent again in one try - that one ended in a miscarriage at 12 weeks, last October. After the miscarriage, I had three periods that I beld for 2 weeks straight, and the Dr. put me on YAZ to regulate my hormones - which caused me to spot/bleed for two months straight, every day - I quit after 2 months of that. I am now back to more "normal" cycles for me.

Now, we are trying again, and we had an overnight stay in a hotel for our 5th wedding anniversary, Saturday - it is about the right timing, and I had lots of Cervical Mucous(sorry if TMI, but being very "wet" down there - all day, not just for sex - is a primary fertility sign) this weekend, too, so we are hoping to have a little sibling for our daughter next spring.

Anyway - learn about your body and pay attention to your natural signals/timing, and just take care of yourself, and hopefully, it will happen right away. And even if you do have issues, if you follow these methods in the book, you will be able to go to the Dr. armed with specific information about YOUR body, so they aren't just guessing, based on the "average" numbers.

Good Luck!

Jessie

My advice would be to start trying when you would be okay if it worked on the first try. It took us two years, two miscarraiges, and fertility to have our daughter (almost one). Because of this we started trying for #2 when she was 9 months - that was the earliest we would be comfortable with getting pregnant and didn't want to waste any time.

And please contact your doctor if it takes you longer than 6 months. I wish that I had not waited over a year before talking to my doctor about help. In fact, I am going to see my doctor next month to see how long she wants us to try before looking at fertility again.

The other advice I would offer is to not share that you are trying and to wait until after your first trimester before sharing your news. It is much more painful to have to tell people that you miscarried or have them constatly asking if you are pregnant yet.

I pray that you do not have the experience I did. Good luck!

I was 37 1/2 when I went off the pill. I'd been on it for the prior 18 years. I got pregnant at 40 1/2. No treatments, just Nature. Honestly, I thought maybe the ship had passed, and I was okay with that. I felt very strongly that if I was meant to have a baby, a baby would come. And, if not, then a baby wouldn't come. I agree with the other poster who recommended reading up on recognizing your fertility signs - signs that indicate you're ovulating - your basal temperature goes up, you have a clear, mucus discharge for a day or two. You can increase your odds if/when you know when to aim at the target. :) I'd advise you to educate yourself, but not to fixate. For nearly the first year I was off the pill, I looked for and tracked signs. Every month, I'd wonder 'are my breasts more sensitive?' 'Am I late, yet?' and so on. I came to realize that I was always hopped up and anxious about things that way, and I didn't like being like that. So, I decided to just go on with my life and, if it was meant to be, it would be. No forcing things, no constant monitoring, no trying to control things. Which turned out to be good practice for when I did become pregnant -- my body was the "car," but the baby was definitely the driver, not me. :)

Enjoy the ride; all of it. Our bodies are fascinating creations pre-, during, and post-pregnancy! And, of course, parenting is a whole amusement park in itself, not just a ride. I send you fertile and peaceful thoughts!

It varies for everyone but if after one year you have not gotten pregnant, doctors officially use the term "infertility".

They also say that after age 35 is when your fertility decreases and it may take you longer to get pregnant. Thats also when doctors use the term "advanced maternal age". Gotta love those official terms!

For me, it took me over 2 years to get pregnant with my daughter (we started trying when I was 23). It took me a year to get pregnant with my son (I was 27), then it only took 6 months to get pregnant with my daughter (I was 32). I joke that I am backwards and it takes me LESS time as I get older. It also seems to take half the time it did last time.

So, you never know. I know people that say they want an "April" baby and they plan it and they get their April baby becuase they get pregnant right away. I also know people who have been trying for 10 years and still haven't gotten pregnant. It varies.

So, when you are ready...go for it! Just dont EXPECT it to to happen immediately. If it does then it will be a great surprise!

Just relax and enjoy! Have sex every day and make it fun! It took me two months at age 38 (after being on the pill for 18 years!). But then I had three very early miscarriages before my lovely daughter. Each time it took me 2 months to conceive. Timing varies so much for each couple, from immediate to over a year, but I've seen so many people take the fun out of it by "trying" too hard to have it work out a certain way. This is life, not a science project...

When I was not on the Pill, I had my period about 2-3x/year, so I assumed it would take me a long time to get pregnant. Well, I got pregnant on our first month of trying!! I was 26 years old and healthy.

I also used the book Taking Charge of your fertility. It has lots of info and helpfull tips. The first year of trying we were just having unprotected sex thinking it was just going to happen. Well we don't know there is only like a 4 day window that you are fertile. The book will help you pinpoint that. After we discovered when to have sex we got pregnant right away and now are expecting #3. You are at a good age to start trying so congrats on your decision and have fun!

Get the book "Taking Charge of your FErtility" by Toni Weschler, PhD---it will help you track your fertility (whether your cycles are "regular" or not) and take some of the guess work out! It should be available in most major bookstores--it's a thick book, but VERY easy to read! And very helpful.

Hi M.,
I am 37 and my husband is 40. We just had our first baby
6 1/2 months ago. After six months of trying we went to my OBGYN and he started me on clomid. We also did two IUI sessions. None of those worked. We decided to just keep trying on our own. I was getting a little concerned wondering if I was ever going to get pregnant because I was older.

People will say all the time "Relax. Don't think think about it and it will happen." In hindsight I think that is exactly what happened. I focused on other things. I started eating really healthy and exercising regularly and within 9 months of trying we got pregnant!

The best advice I can give is to track your best fertility days each month. Fertility monitors are great. They can be expensive, but can really help you pinpoint the best times of the month to get pregnant. You can also try the temping method which is kind of complicated, but free. www.Babyzone.com is a great website to answer all of your questions. They have all kinds of information for every stage of pregnancy and trying to concieve. There are message boards and chatrooms where you can talk to a variety of women going through the same thing as you. I highly recommend it!

I would not be worried at all about your age.You are at the perfect age to start a family! If you have normal periods and you and your husband are healthy, then it is just a matter of time! Good luck!

It varies, but alot has to do with how well you time your attempts to conceive (i.e. intercourse during your ovulation time), and heredity--(how soon did your mom get pregnant when trying)? Best wishes for quick success!

It only took us a month to get pregnant, and I had been on the pill for four years prior to that...but I think that everybody is different, so I wouldn't start until you are sure that if you got pregnant the very next day, you would be ready.

It took us about 1.5 years for our first and five months for our second. The clinic told us to try for a year before seeking an infertility doctor and so we did and then there tests took about two months before taking Clomid. Once on Clomid I conceived my first month. Clomid was also used with our second. If you're charting your temps and keeping an eye on cervical fluid I'd see an infertility doctor at 6 months of trying. I used a charting software program on-line and it helped a ton in nailing the days I needed to try to conceive.

Now we are trying for our 2nd one and have been for 10 months now. I have a regular cycle now and know when i ovulate. So, i just dont know if a second one is in the cards for me:( Anyway, good luck. I was pregnant with our first son 6 months after we got married... I was pregnant with my second son 3 months after I decided to stop nursing the first son. We weren't really "trying" either time and sometimes I really believe that makes a difference. I've heard it is harder to conceive when you're stressed out about trying to get pregnant... Though it's hard to do, try to not focus on wanting to have a baby (easier said than done) and just have fun! Who knows what will happen in that time. :) Good luck! Babies are a handful and a whole bunch of fun at the same time! Best of luck!

I am sorry to say but no one can really give you a straight answer on how long it will take you to get pregnant. It all depends on your body. The best thing you can do is start trying now, but do not think about it. Just live your everyday life like nothing is different, and don't even think about trying.. Sometimes when you are trying and you think about it all the time, you can make your self stress out and then it takes longer to get pregnant.. Good luck to you!!!

It took us 6 weeks to conceive our first child, 4 months for the second and a month for the third. I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrom (PCOS) so we figured out that I need to be on a drug for diabetics, even though I'm not diabetic. Really if you want to make sure you know when you are fertile and don't want to waste time trying to conceive, sign up for a natural family planning class. We have gone through Twin Cities FertilityCare Center (www.tcnfp.org). Our instructor Janet has been invaluable in helping us conceive our children. She is the one who recommended I go on ACTOS to conceive our second child after it was taking us so long and my cycles were too long. You go through initial classes and there are instructors always available to help you with follow up care. Good luck M.. It is really exciting having children.

It took the first try for us...we were 28 yrs old and in a very similar position as it sounds like you and your husband are in. We thought, what the heck, it will probably take awhile. WRONG! I was showing symptoms before my cycle was even do. So, be prepared for that to happen as well-- we were a little caught off guard but are thrilled to have our almost 1 yr old daughter! Good Luck!! :)

I haven't read anything yet, so sorry if I am giving you the same info as someone else. You should get a book called 'Taking Charge of your Fertility'. I think you would be able to get pregnant within 4 months for sure. You can also get a saliva kit at any pharmacy type store. I know Walmart carries them. They are nice because you can reuse them. It will let you know when you are most able to get pregnant.

There is no "perfect" time to start trying. If you want a family, then start trying. Even if it happens in the first month, you've got 9 months to get used to the idea and prepare and if it takes a year then you don't feel as rushed.

For my first it took about 3 or 4 months. It took a year and some fertility drugs to get pregnant with #2. It's a misconception that it's easier to get pregnant after you've had one; due to added stress and lingering hormone issues from the first pregnancy.

I would never suggest waiting...my husband and I spent 7.5 years seeing infertility specialists until I was finally pregnant with our awesome twins. Had we waited...I fear that thought.

The spectrum for how long it takes is so different for every woman. My sister was pregnant within one week of wanting to be...my close friend took 4 years. The only thing that I can offer you is luck and happiness.

Let us know when you're expecting! =)

We tried and I conceived our first son on the very first try--I was (almost) 25 at the time. Our second son was conceived during the first month of trying (maybe even the first time--though not as positive as with our first!) In both cases, I had a regular cycle and knew exactly when I was ovulating so it was very easy (for us).

Good luck!!

I went off the pill in January and we were in the no longer not trying mode and I had the postive pregnancy test on Father's Day. I was 29 and if it hadn't happened in the next couple months, we would have started tracking a bit more to improve our chances. It's likely that I have endrometreosis, so we didn't want to wait too long in case that did cause any complications. I'd suggest starting to take an over the counter pre-natal and just see what happens for a few months before putting any pressure on with tracking temperatures and and all that. Good luck!

(We also had our two fur babies first and the four legged children adapted just fine to the two legged one!)

It only took two months with my second child. I stopped taking birth control in early August and was pregnant by the end of September. I figured my cycle and I got pregnant the second time I ovulated. But I also bought the special thermometer and my cycles have always been pretty predictable so it wasn't hard to figure out when I was going to ovulate. Good luck and congratulations on your decision to start a family! Each time is so exciting. I was just as exciting with the birth of my second child as I was with the first!

For first child it took almost a year of trying, for the second it took 1 month! I would say if you are both ready for kids, try now because you never know how long it will take. It depends on what type of birth control you have used, how fertile you are, and your levels of stress etc. Good luck to you on this AMAZING journey!
