How Long Until My Milk Supply Comes Back?

Last week, I had mastitis that cut off some of my supply from one breast. Then, I had surgery, which required me to abstain from food AND drink (water included) for 24 hours. Less than a day later, I caught a terrible stomach flu and was unable to keep anything (water included) down for another 24 hours. I had been pumping 4.5-5 ounces at each sitting before that. Now, I am pumping 1-1.5 ounces a sitting, and have been for the last 3 days. I have been forced to supplement with formula because I was just unable to supply my baby with the food she needed. I am trying to eat and drink a lot, nursing so constantly that my nipples are bleeding and cracked just like they were right after my daughter was born, and she is fussy all the time and I'm not seeing any increase in my supply. About how long do I need to do this before I should start seeing results, does anyone know? It has already been multiple days, and my baby is HUNGRY.

ADD: I am using lanolin and Motherlove to cope with the constant nursing, but it isn't helping much.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for your advice and support. A full 5 weeks after my surgery, my supply is finally back up on level with my daughter's demand. Wow. I had no idea it could take so long! I'm glad I didn't give up, though...

I wonder if you need some support for stress? There is something called L-Theanine... it's an amino acid that can help us be calm and focused. You could ask your practitioner if it's okay to take. Or there's something called RELORA that is an anti-stress herbal product.
Here's a link to LaLeche League's page with answers to questions. Maybe there's info. on how long it will take for your supply to kick in. http://www.lalecheleague.com/nb.html I'm thinking you need to destress though too.
I'm so sorry you've been through so much. Hang in there.... you are doing a wonderful job working through this and it will pay off. Nursing is the best thing for your child. I'm so sorry about the bleeding.... I wonder if there's some sort of breast shield that might help? Something with lanolin or that product called MotherLove? I saw some on Ebay but maybe a local store would carry it. I would call a health food store and ask what they have. Blessings and prayers, Ali :)

PS.... when your supply comes in better and when you've had a chance to relax a bit.... you could start trying to store some extra milk in the freezer for emergencies. My daughter in law did that and it came in really handy when she unexpectedly had to go to the ER and then had to go on a medication for a while.

Keep pumping every few hours and if you do that consistently it should come back. Go to your health food store and get some fenugreek to help boost your supply. It is safe (my lactation consultant had me use it). I had supply issues in general and that combined with pumping helped. It took me a good month but I finally had a supply that would feed my baby. You had a temporary setback, but I'm sure you will be back to where you were. Don't worry about giving a little formula. Your baby is being fed and you are doing the best you can. Don't get tense either as that can make the milk slower in coming in. Good luck, and hope you are feeling better.

Please, please, PLEASE look into the SNS (Supplemental Nursing System) by Medela. You can go to the web site and find it under Special Feeding Devices. I recommend this to everyone I know because it was a life saver for me and several of my friends!!!! If you have any questions please feel free to email me and I will go into more detail. It will allow you to build your milk supply back up (much more comfortably I might add) and help you make sure you child is getting enough. I wish more doctors would recommend this because it really is amazing! (You can also read one of my other posts.) I'm sorry you are going through this but don't give up!

1) Call La Leche League.
2) Try holding your baby in different positions
so that her latch is rotated, not always in the same direction.
3) Drink more water.
4) Practice relaxation/meditation exercises.
5) Call La Leche League.

have you tried an SNS (supplemental nursing system) It is a little tube that you attach to your breast fight near the nipple. there is a bottle at the end of the tube that you put formula in. this allows the baby to get some food while nursing and you still get the stimulation. that way the baby wont get too comfortable with the bottle. I know that Medela makes them, they are a little pricy, but I got my from kaiser for free. I bet you could even look up on the internet how to make one.
good luck

I also had mastitis in one breast and it took a while for the supply to come back. Just try not to stress about it. Keep pumping because that will help increase as well. Since your nipples are in a lot of pain use a nipple shield until they start to heal. I have had to use this with both my kids only because they didn't like my nipple, I really don't know, but that saved me to keep breastfeeding. You can get that shield at Target.
