How much maintenance is involved in an above ground pool? Also how safe is it for a 5 year old?

What can I do next?

A LOT more than an inground pool.

Even if you go up 2-3 sizes on the filter... You'll need to clean the filter daily and clean the pool every couple days (there is no commercially available filter for above ground pools that does the job of an unground filter.

You'll ALSO need to be adjusting the chemicals several times a day any day the pool is in use, and typically 1-2 times a day it's not (the sun neutralizes the chlorine a LOT faster).

Temp also varies a lot more, but there's not a lot to be done about that.

Like any pool, it's as safe as the adults around make it. Kids drown in 2 inches of water. Eyes on, all the time.

I LOVE OURS. In Colorado or Utah it doesn't make a lot of sense to put in an I ground pool when above ground will do for 3months of use. We got ours on sale for $200. I do test chemicals and clean the filter everyday. I use the ski met whenever we are out there and I vacuum it twice a week or so. I estimate I spend 20 minutes a day to maintain something we use at least 15 hours a week. It has been such a blessing this year in a house with no AC and record temps. My kids are 4,7 and 10 and they know that they are. It to be near the pool when we aren't all outside.

The same amount of maintenance that any other type of pool needs is needed. You will need to monitor the chemical levels, do daily removal of debris, and make certain you keep all the parts of the pool maintained by a certified technician. A child should always wear floatation devices until they can swim and be monitored 100% by an adult. Even if you're confident in your child's abilities to swim they should never be left unattended in or around a pool. Proper safety precautions should always be taken.

Ditto Riley word for word, a LOT more is also my experience.

We have a locked fence around ours and my 3 year old has at least a couple of pair of adult eyes on him when he's playing in the back yard to make sure he doesn't try to get to the lock. And he has those same eyes on him when he's in the pool, as Riley said, children can drown in 2 inches of water, just enough to cover their nostrils is all that's needed, let alone a few feet of water.
