How Many Mom's Had Anit-biotics Administerd to Them During Labor?

I was administered ab before labor. My kid is now 2.5 months and while gassy doesn't have excessive spit up.

If you are given antibiotics during labor, and you nurse, your baby can get thrush. Doesn't really cause a lot of spitting up just horrible gas. It is after a yeast infection in the baby's digestive system.

Spitting up a lot tends to be from letting the baby eat too fast or not burping. Also some babies have refux issues which have nothing to do with antibiotics. Antibiotics simply do not stay in your system long enough to cause issues 2 months out and they do not give you enough to do any damage beyond the thrush.

Have you had the baby checked for thrush?

I have seen internet rumor about this. No real evidence.

Every woman who had a baby by c-section has had antibiotics around the time of birth. But not every woman who had a c-section has a baby with reflux.

I understand the need to look for answers. I had 1 severe reflux baby, and one baby without reflux. I wish I knew what caused the reflux, so that people could prevent it because it's miserable, but both my babies had the same type of birth (both c-sections actually). So I personally would not think that the reflux was caused by the antibiotic.

Mostly with reflux, you have to wait for the baby to outgrow it - usually between 6 and 9 months old. In the meantime, here is a website with tips that helped me with my reflux baby. ETA: JB has a good point about diet. My reflux baby was also severely cow's milk intolerant. I had to go completely dairy-free. That didn't make the reflux go away, but it was much much worse when I had dairy (I was nursing, so I had to avoid the dairy so I wouldn't pass it on through my milk).

Hmmm...many, many, many women are given antibiotics during labor. I was in at least 2 of my 4 labors. No excessive spit up issues. I don't think you'll find a correlation.

I definitely believe that our understanding of the microbiome is rudimentary at best and there seems to be growing evidence that disrupting the microbiome via c-sections, antibiotics, formula feeding and introducing solid foods too early can be tied to a variety of health issues. That said, even if there is a correlation between antibiotics and spit up (I googled quickly and couldn't find one), what's done is done. If your daughter is exclusively breastfeeding, perhaps there is something in her diet that is affecting her baby that she could try eliminating. If she's formula feeding, it may be that a formula change is in order. Or perhaps the baby could benefit from a high-quality probiotic (check with the pediatrician on recommendations for which brands are safe and effective), or a visit to someone who specializes in infant chiropractic (which is usually done by gentle massage).

I doubt you will find a connection. I wonder if you will find a connection between lactose intolerance and excessing spitting up? I would have your daughter try eliminating all dairy first (even if it was related to antibiotics, that ship has sailed).

Usually spitting up, even excessive spitting up, is from over feeding the baby. IF they have something wrong with their esophagus and have REFLUX or GERD then it's a biological thing that happened during their formation in her uterus.

I had antibiotics for both my boys, no spitting issues. I dont believe there would be a correlation between them.

Talk to the pedi. Gerd maybe? Over feeding? Type of formula? Start there first. Good luck!

Well, I spit up all the time when I was little. ALL the time. I think my mom had a rag over her shoulder the entire first year of my life.

Turns out that I found out as a 6th grader during a marathon stomach virus that landed me in the ER that I have a small esophagus, and that was why I spit up so much as an infant.

Your daughter may be burping her wrong. It could be the type of formula. It could be a small esophagus. Is the baby uncomfortable? Is she gaining weight? What does the pediatrician say? Is it to the point of reflux or GERD?

There was no doubt a reason for the antibiotic. Stop trying to second guess the doctor. Your daughter is grasping at straws. Be glad that she is healthy and that the baby is okay.

Some babies are just spitters. With my daughter I wouldn't put my shirt on until right before we walked out the door. And then I draped receiving blankets over me once I did get dressed. When I nursed her, the nursing pillow, chair, and me were covered with burp cloths and receiving blankets. I called the nurse line more than once because I was so concerned about how much she was spitting up. She eventually grew out of it. Our son in the other hand rarely spit up. I don't think I was given an antibiotic, but to be honest I don't remember. I had an emergency c-section and had to be completely knocked out because the epidural only numbed my feet.

Have her talk to the doctor. But we were told that as long as she didn't seem uncomfortable and the spit up wasn't a weird color that it wasn't anything to worry about.

Has she asked her pediatrician about it? There are different types of "spit-up." So me is just normal, baby spit up and some is reflux, but there are other things that can cause spit up. If she's concerned, she should bring it up with her ped.

That being said, spit-up at 2 1/2 months is still not that unusual. Does it bother baby? If it doesn't bother baby, I wouldn't be too worried about it.

Some kids just spit up a lot more than others.
Doesn't matter if they are breast fed or formula fed.
It usually settles down round about the 1 yr mark.
I had antibiotics during delivery and our son had no spit up issues.
Try smaller more frequent meals rather than larger meals and burp at regular intervals.

My daughter spit up constantly for the first year or so. In fact, she wore a bib constantly to keep her clothes clean and dry. I was not given an antibiotic during labor.
