How Many Ounces Do You Pump in a Regular Work Day?

I am only pumping about 8 oz. in a work day (8 hours). Is this normal?

Update: My baby is 5 mos. and I have been trying to exclusively breastfeed. So, if I am with her, she only nurses. I drink about 64-80 oz. of water a day.

What can I do next?

I am a teacher and I used to pump to and from work in teh car, once on my prep period for 45 minutes and once at lunch for 30 minutes. At my peak, I would get about 10 oz. At the end, only 3 oz:(

I have supplemented with formula since my son was about 2 months because he never seemed content after breastfeeding. When I started back to work after 10 weeks, I pumped 2x a day until about a month ago. I used to get anywhere from 6-12 ounces per day depending on the last time I fed him (more when I didn't feed him before daycare, less if I fed him when he woke up).

I pump about 20 oz in a workday. But I tend to overproduce. Eat oatmeal, drink lots of water, and pump frequently - I do 20 minutes at a time. Your supply will increase if you do this for a few days!

I really pushed my body and would try to get 12 oz. a day but it was hard. I pumped 3 times a day while at work and if I didn't get 12 oz. I would pump once before I want to bed at night. I would say 8 oz. is probably what my body wanted to produce during the work day. Unfortunately day care wanted to give my kids more so I needed to produce more.

I ate oatmeal every morning and drank the fenugeek tea as well. I am not sure it really helped physically, but mentally I thought I was doing as much as I could.

It is very stressful for those of us that can't produce a lot of milk. I feel for you. Good Luck.

When I was pumping for my first son, I pumped twice a day and seemed to get about 20oz all day. 10oz each session, and about 5oz each side per session. Make sure your drinking enough water. The more you pump, the more you'll produce.

I did slightly more than that at first, but I got some advice from lactation experts that really helped. Here are some tricks to try: 1. massage each breast (from orb to nipple, with a warm, damp paper towel) before you get started. 2. take a onesie or a hat the baby has been wearing and a head shot photo of the baby. when you are ready to begin pumping, look down at the picture (as if you were holding the baby, same posture if possible) and put the onesie on your shoulder or across your upper arm so you can smell it. It will help with letdown. 3. record (on your cell phone) your baby's noises the next time you nurse. listen to it the next time you pump. Hope this helps you! Did wonders for me.

first of all i want to say AWESOME job mama!!!! it is wonderful that you are doing so much for the health of your child!!!!! good thing is soon she will be eating solids and wont "need" so much while you are gone. Not sure how often you are pumping but increasing a pumping or even decreasing a pump can help. try doing a pumping an hour after she goes to bed at night ( if you know she is going to be asleep for a bit) it may be only a little milk at first but you can train your body to make some at that time. also make sure she isnt being overfed by a bottle during the day. she only needs 3 to 4 ounces of breastmilk at a feeding. It is not the same as formula where they need a giant 8 ounces at a feeding...good luck and remember if you have to supplement its OK! she is still getting all the good stuff!!! too many moms think of breastfeeding as all or nothing and you can do both if needed. again GREAT JOB!!!!!!!!!!

i was pumping less than that and things went fine. I also picked up some mothers milk tea at health food store to help. I think they can suck out more than we can pump. Keep up the good work! BTW, I freaked daily about it...now that I am done nursing I can look back with ease.

I usually pump about 12oz or more in an 8 hour shift. I work some 12 hour shifts too and I get more during those shifts. I pump every 3 hours when I am at work and breastfeed every 3-4 hours when at home.

How old is your baby? I pumped about that but it would fluctuate from time to time and when our son started eating solids more often it went down.

I used to pump about 10 oz...but often had trouble meeting that number (he usually took 2 5 oz bottles while I was gone). I did usually pump 3x a day until he was eating alot of solids, then I moved down to 2x. I would pump during morning and afternoon break and also while I ate my lunch.

I would pump one time on a 8-12 hour work day and would pump either 8 to 12 oz. I would also sometimes pump on my way home from work if I worked a long day and would get more but I can't remember how much.

This is my fourth child (he is 6 1/2 month now and pretty much excusively breastfed) that I am breastfeeding while being back at work. I pump right before leaving the house (usually get 4 oz), and then I pump once at work during lunch time (usually get about 8 oz). Then I feed the baby right after I come home. Usually that amount is enough for my baby, if not, I have formula handy. I did pump twice at work (and will get about 12 oz) until my baby was 5-6 month old.
While it doesn't seem like a lot of oz. pumped in a day, it seems enough for my baby. He is in 95% percerntile in both weight and height, so he is well nourished. One thing though - he still nurses (and my other kids did) at night (1-2 times), so I think he gets more calories then.

I would say 8 oz a day is normal, and please don't feel guitly about supplementing if needed.

Every woman is different!! When I was nursing my second son, exclusively, I would pump out of the other breast right after I nursed him on one. I know some people say that you are supposed to nurse on both sides, but wait for it!! I pumped SEVEN to EIGHT ounces out of ONE breast every 2-3 hours. So, in 8 hours I would pump approximately 21-24oz!! CRAZY!

Your body produces about 1-1.5 oz of milk an hour, so that sounds about right. When I was pumping (twice in a 10 hr work day, including commute), I pumped between 10-12 oz. Another thing to keep up your milk supply, only nurse (don't pump) on the weekends to signal to your body how much your baby needs....I always pumped the most milk on Mondays! Good luck.
