How Much and How Often for Feeding Solids?

My 6 month old just started solids about a week ago. My question is how many times per day and how much per feeding do I feed him? I feel like I feed him enough but he seems to always want more.
One concern is that he has reflux and I dont want to fill his tummy too much because that will risk him refluxing.....yet, I want to give him enough food. He is gaining weight very well so that's not an issue, I just dont really know the specifics of how to do this since this is my first munchkin.

Also, are there any websites that talk about this?

What can I do next?

most if his nutrition needs to come from formula or breastmilk at 6 mo to at least 9 mo and many breastfed babies until one year. If he is still hungry make sure you are giving him enough formula or breastmilk. I would give him solids after you have nursed or fed him his formula so that he does not fill up on solids. I would be more concerned with if you are feeding him enough breastmilk or formula first. Every baby is different. My daughter is almost 7 months and won't eat any solids yet. Did you ask your doctor? Maybe 2 ounces a couple of times a day?

According to mine and my SIL doc they only need 18-20 ounces of formula a day and feed as much as they want! My daughter (7 months) Eats breakfast, lunch and dinner solids and formula imbetween. She eats between 1-2 of the stage 2 mixed with cereal... I would just feed what he wants and go from there any questions I would call the pedi :)

Formula is complete nutrition at his age. Baby food has little nutritional value, read the label. It's main purpose is to teach the baby to chew and swallow food, therefore he should be getting more formula or breast milk and that will make him less hungry.

I also fed the kids baby food at 6 months and added juice and other stuff but it really teaches them that food should be fatty, salty, and sweet. Reflux is, as you said, from a too full tummy and babies eating too early is a real issue. It is thicker and causes the throat to have to expand and contract, it causes the stomach to have to get bigger because the food processes much differently thatn formula and breastmilk, etc...

Please discuss you options with your Pediatrician or a Nutritionist at your local Health Department.

if you google your question plenty of sites will come up. My DD had reflux and it accually cleared up when we started solids at 4mnth at 6 months she was having cereal mixed with 1 container of stage two foods unless you get the DHA kind its already has the ceral mixed with it. for lunch i would give her a veggie and would try a new food like grilled cheese but she was already two months into food. dinner would usually be a cereal or oatmeal and inbetween she would nurse . now she is gong ho on anything i give her. your best bet would be if he wants more give it to him and if he does get sick you will have a good indication of his cut off point for now. Just take it slow and follow his lead. and feed slowly let him play with toys in the chair so his tummy has time to tell his brain I'm full. good luck

You should really discuss this with your pediatrician at your sons 6month check up. I know our doctor gives us a hand out at each appointment that has the milestones and covers appropriate feeding. I know at 6 months our children were introduced cereal at breakfast. We gradually introduced cereal at lunch. Then, one fruit or veggie at a time. We made sure they were still getting as adequate amount of formula.
