How Much (Cow's) Milk Does Your 1 Year Old Get?

My DD is one, and I have been giving her milk with her supper. She still gets about 4 'servings' of breastmilk every day, but I'm done feeding her on-demand. Sooo... roughly how much whole milk should she be drinking? She drinks it fine... it's not her favorite thing in the world but if I put it in her cup she will drink it. Right now she is only getting maybe 4-6 oz. per day (in addition to the nursings...) I'm not too worried about it right now, but I am trying to wean her (slowly...) so I would like an amount to work up to. :) Thanks!

~she does get plenty of calcium... she loves cheeses, yogurt, and broccoli is her favorite food EVER (so far). BUT I do have a calcium deficiency, and I'm slightly worried that it could be a genetic thing... so I really try to give her lots of calcium and vit. D.

What can I do next?

Ask your Pediatrician.

Aside from that, whole milk is recommended through 2 years old, because the 'milk fats' in it is an essential nutrient for brain development. It is not all about calcium.

My BF baby did wonderfully with whole milk and I offer it to her with everymeal since she turned one. At first, she didn't drink as much b/c she was still being breast fed, but I weaned her pretty quickly between 12-13 months (b/c my supply had dried up and I didn't see a point in attempting formula). I'd already gotten her used to a sippy cup with water, so we didn't have to worry about that transition. Also, my DD LOVES to have a water sippy cup in her crib. I feel better about having it there because I think they play so much, they forget to drink. This way, I feel like she can regulate her own thirst needs.

Now, at 17 months, all she drinks is water and milk...maybe diluted juice 2-3 times a month.

Broccoli's my DD's fav food, too!!!

When we switched over, kiddo essentially just met the same volume of cows milk that he drank in formula (although table food was added in *great* quantity, milk consumption stayed the same).

In our case that meant apx 64oz (1/2 gallon) of whole milk per day. He's kept that up until about age 5. He still often drinks 1/2 gallon a day, but not always. Don't use our numbers, though. Kiddo was nursing apx 20oz per feeding as an infant, and then cut the volume in half at 9/10 months when we had to switch to formula.

As long as she is eating calcium rich foods and drinking water throughout the day, she really doesn't need cow's milk. But if she'll drink it, go ahead and give it to her. I'd stick with offering it at meal times, or maybe before bedtime with a snack. My little guy does not like whole milk, but I've been able to get him to drink about 1 cup of 2% per day. If he goes a day without it, that's fine too. He has his yogurt for breakfast and usually some cheese with lunch or dinner, and always has a sippy of water available.

I think what you are giving her right now is really perfect, no more. I would not push the milk since BF babies often don't care for it. My son hated it and I wish I didn't sneak cream in his oatmeal for over a year because it turns out he is allergic to it. Sounds like you are feeding her a healthy diet. Even when you do wean, with her cheese and yogurt consumption, I would not do more than 2 cups a day.

I give my son 4 oz in the morning and 6 oz at night. He gets other sources of calcium throughout the day as well.

This is a good age to make the transition (I think) and it sounds like she's ready to accept milk... Im nursing am & pm & giving milk in between & asked the dietician- they said up to 32 oz. Crazy to me, I give 3- 5 oz bottles a day & 1 of juice in the afternoon. I actually asked on FB askdrsears (you can post questions & the pediatrician will answer you, kind of cool) b/c my dd slowed down on food consumption, he recommended dropping to 10 oz a day. So somewhere between 10 oz and 32 (some babies, Ive seen them guzzle 8 oz...) keep giving the vit D unless the milk is fortified. My DD will drink either cow or goats milk, I use the goats milk, unless its unavailable.

My 1 y/o at that time - was still breastfeeding regularly - didn't get milk until she went to pre-school at 3.5-4 y/o. I don't like giving cow's milk as a daily food, overall milk causes a lot of issues with even adult GI tracts, so it can be even worse with children. I gave her organic yogurts, cheeses and ice cream for calcium, not to mention tons of veggies have more calcium and Vit D than milk does.

I never weaned my girl, she self weaned at 4.5 y/o and only drinks milk at school - organic milk that I buy, not the school's crappy commercial milk.
