The average for this area is $7-10/hour.
My husband and I have been very lucky and have had family around to watch our 18 month old son (for free) on the occassional night out. However, our family has now moved and the free service is no longer an option. I asked my son's nursery worker at the church if she was willing to babysit for us on occasion and she said she was, but how much do I pay her? She's a college student with tons of experience. What do you think? I do not want to rip her off.

I have 15 families that I babysit for. Some a lot some are just on occasions. But I researched a lot on the price that I would charge and for 1 child 0-5 yrs I charge $10 and hour. I do discounts for older and multiple children.
The average babysitter makes $12 and hour in the US. You have to take into consideration Experience, Ceritifications (CPR/First Aid, Shaken Baby Syndrome, SIDS, etc.), training experiences, and so on. If you go to Playtime it is $8 and hour and they are with a bunch of children. You will be getting 1 on 1. You also want to keep you sitter happy and interested in staying with you family (as much as this can sound bad)
My families do not ? the rate as they know my experience and I will work with them as well. If you read more past posts you will see the average rate ranges from $9-12 an hour. I hope this helps. If things dont work out feel free to check out my website at www.freewebs.com/babysittingwitherika which has reviews from parents (as well as on my profile here), an availabililty calendar, resume, etc.
Good luck!

I would ask her what her fee is. That might be start. I have not found a babysitter in our area but when we lived in AL I believe we paid $6 an hour.
I usually pay $8-10 per hour. When I was babysitting it was $6-7 per hour, so I've adjusted for inflation. If you feel uncomfortable telling her what you'll pay her, ask her what she usually charges per hour.
