If there's after school care (they go there after school and take tkd), it's $75 a week.
If there's no after school care (you just go to evening classes), it's $100 a month (but if you pay for the whole year all at once it's $1000).
My son takes Ty Kwon Do classes twice a week for 1/2 hour. It was $119 a month and now its going to $133 a month . Really ? its crazy expensive compared to my daughters dance and gymnastics classes. It's about double ! If he didn't love it I would stop the classes .What do you pay ?

My son was giong to try to do TKD. He tried it for a month and by the end of the month he didn't like it.
THANK GOD
When I went over the paperwork it was going to be $115 a month!
Are you freakin kiddin me??
Thank goodness he was playing rec soccer which was $68 for the SEASON!
No way would I pay that much.
My daughters are both in Taekwondo. We paid $75/month (each) without the after-school program. This does not include the testing fees, which are $50 (each) every two months. It also does not include uniform or sparring gear. We now pay $75/week (each) for the after-school program. My girls both get about two hours of taekwondo instruction daily. They are both top of their Taekwondo class because they get so much one-on-one time with their instructor, so it's well worth the money to me.
I pay $100 for two kids and myself once a week for one hour (hour and a half if you come on friday nights). About $35 per person to test.
ETA: $100/month, that is...
Taekwondo seems usually to be expensive. You could go to the school and ask the Master or the business manager to explain to you why it costs what it does - get a breakdown.
Is your son learning? Is the taekwondo discipline showing in his behavior outside the dojang? If that's the case, then you might try to hang in there. As with many other things, you might find a cheaper school, but you might get what you pay for.
My kids both do Tang Soo Do (very similar) and costs are comparable to what you pay around here. My son is $125/m and my daughter (2nd person in the same family) is discounted to $99/m. However, they are not limited to 2 classes per week. They can go to every class they are eligible for if they want to, which is about 6 classes or so. They offer "standard" belt-ranked classes 5 days a week (M,T,W,T and Sat mornings) and "extra" classes on various days. Hyper-class on Fridays, Teen class on Fridays, Weapons class on Mondays, Jiu-Jitsu on Wednesday, Advanced Testing classes on Fridays (for students prepping for a Dan test in the next 3 months) etc.
That's about what we pay and then you have the extra expense of the uniform and the testing. It IS crazy expensive!
My son took mixed martial arts - $140 per month. You can attend as many classes a week as you want that are offered for your belt level. We wanted to add grappling, which would be an additional $40 per month! Everything is so expensive. This was after we paid hundreds for his gear. Anyway, he went for awhile, then we pulled him out because he was starting football, which had practice twice a week, games on Saturday. After all, there are only so many hours in a week and at those prices, I just can't afford to have him in there if he is not attending. We plan to pick it up again on the off-season.
My kids take karate. They attend 3 days per week for 50 minutes and includes a sparring class. I pay $143 per kid per month.
A friend's child takes Tae Kwon Do. He goes twice a week for 40 minutes and it costs $45/mo. (Uniform and gear costs a couple hundred $ additional.) The inexpensiveness of that school means a constant wait-list. It took over a year before her kid could start.
$85/month, twice a week for 45 mins- no contract.
Tae Kwon Do in my city, is expensive. Plus you have to buy, a set of the teacher's DVR's.
And, they promote everyone, no matter how young or competent. So for example, you can have a 7 year old who is a black belt, already. Even if they are not, black belt capable. It is the sort of class, where nowadays, "everyone" gets a "prize" regardless of ability.
My daughter takes Karate.
It is $55/month or less, if you pay ahead.
And there is also sibling discounts.
And it is a traditional martial arts school. You earn, what you get.
It is twice a week for 1.5 hours.
My daughter tried Tae Kwon Do. She did not like it.
Aikido:
1 hour
3x per week
$125 per month
No testing fees
No belt cost
Free uniform to start
___________
3 hours of Gymnastics = 417 per quarter
139 per month
Dance = $15 per class
15x3x5 = $225 per month
______________
I used to homeschool (for 5 years)
I HATE evening "full price" classes
We used to pay 25%-50%
Its pricey being in Awayschool
My daughter trained and achieved her black belt in Tang Soo Doo.
6 yrs ago, I was paying $140 a month and she went twice a week for 2 hours each and 1 hour a week was private training and testing.
We did not have to pay for standard testing but when it came to the Black Belt, we did have to pay for that test $300 and all the paperwork/certificates authenticating her achievement that came with it that is now framed and hanging upstairs in my house.
I also learned that it was customary after the Black Belt testing and ceremony that the new black belt students provide a meal for all of the guru's and families at the school. We were at a private school which was very specialized and we also spent about $500 on a catered meal afterwards.
It is about $700 a year at our local Taekwondo College. They do an $89 two month trial, with a free uniform included, and after the two months you need to sign a one year contract. It is unlimited, so you can go every day if you like. Our local Karate dojo is approximately the same price. Karate at the community center is about $40/month for a twice a week on a three month contract. Sikaran Arnis at the cultural center was $40 a month for twice a week, with no contract. My boys have tried them all, and want to go to the $700/year Taekwondo or Karate because that is where their friends go, but I will not do a one year contract because I know they won't (and I won't) want to be inside doing martial arts at all in the summer!
We pay $150 per child at our academy. Classes are 45min long 2x's a week. I have 2 children participating...so $300 a month
The $300 a month is a family rate (once 2 family members are participating and paying any other family members may participate for no additional fees) so I have joined them just because I feel like I need to get my money's worth :)
We do like it and I enjoy the structure, discipline, and respect it teaches so for us it is worth the expense.
