How Much Do You Pay for Your Health Insurance?

We are self employed so having health insurance can be very expensive. We are currently on Aetna PPO, and just got a letter two days ago that our premiums will be going up from $352 to $405 next month. This covers my husband and 3 children (7, 4, and 21 months). I am not eligible to be covered due to my pre-existing condition with type 1 diabetes. I contacted the person who got us on Aetna December of 2006 to see if there were any other health insurance with lower rates. He sent me a quote and this one is at $391 dollars a month. I don't know if this is reasonable or not, but I really don't want to spend more than $350, and would like to try to find one under $350 if possible. Is it possible to find health insurance under $350?

What can I do next?

We have Unicare, and were paying $330 a month to cover 4 people. But, just received a letter this week saying it is going up to $360/mo. I would be surprised if you were able to find anything cheaper than that, but if you do, let me know!

We are covered through my husband's company. We are with BCBS and the plan is excellent. We pay $20 per Dr. visit, $20 per Rx, and we've never paid anything else. This includes a day surgery. We do pay about $4000 a year and the company pays the rest.

I would think if you accept a higher deductible you should get a break. If we had to self insure, we would certainly have a high deductible. I know in the past when we were insured by another company we did have a deductible and we never met it because we were so rarely at the Dr. Luckily we are a very healthy family.

I hope you find something that works for you.

350-400 is pretty good for your hubby and three kiddos. Before my employer began offering insurance, we had BCBS and it was about $285 just for my hubby and son. Now through work we have all three covered (also with BCBS) and it is $285 every two weeks...but employer sponsered are more because they cover pregnancy, etc...so with your three kids and hubby that is as good a price you will find for decent coverage.

We are covered through the City of Dallas by United Healthcare and pay well over what you are paying for premiums per month. We also have a $9000 family deductible that has to be met each year. I would say the best thing to do about your situation is to pay attention to who you will be voting for in the upcoming Presidential election!

Sweetheart....with my husband's group coverage we paid almost double that!!! That was for an 80/20!! This year we did an HSA qualifying plan through BCBS (on our own...not his company)and our monthly premium is $330, however BCBS won't cover a dime until we meet the $3500 family deductible. Then we will have a 90/10 plan. So...wish I had better news for you, but we are all healthy (got the top preferred plan with BCBS) and this is the best we can do. My husbands work it was near $700 a month, so we took the risk.

You might check Unicare as they seem to have the lowest rates although Im not sure that it will be that much cheaper...of course, the higher your deductible the cheaper your premium. good luck.

I think that is pretty reasonable. With my insurance through my job I pay $191 every two weeks for 3 people and thats being employed by a hospital! Good luck finding something cheaper, if thats possible!

Hi L.,
I'm self employed and just went through someone to get insurance. You can call him and tell him what kind of coverage you are looking for (deductibles, monthly payments, etc.) and he can see if he can find something within your price range. He found something that was perfect for me. Here is his info...I hope it helps! He works out of Plano.
