How Much Fruit?

I'm wondering how much fruit you other moms out there let your kids eat. Mine (2 &4) eat a variety of foods including vegetables, but they love fruit the most....especially my two year old. Sometimes, I serve fruit just as a dessert so he will eat his other food. A lot of times I have to limit his fruit because I'm thinking they may have too much sugar. He still eats a lot of fruit but would eat more if I let him. What is your child's normal intake of fruits?

Thanks! :-)

I had a talk with my doctor about this becuase my 3 year old eats a TON of fruit. I offer fruit with all his meals and if he asks for it as a snack I give it to him. He will eat many servings a day. I say many becuase I don't know the exact amount. Example he will eat 2 cups blueberries with breakfast, peach and banana for lunch, tons of grapes, 10 strawberries for dinner. He can polish off 4-6 clementines at a sitting. My doctor said it was fine as long as he is eating other foods and his bm's are normal and no tummy aches. He eats a variety of dairy, protein, grain, veggies throughout the day. So I go with if they are eating variety and no bm problems you are fine. The doctor said he would rather ask for fruit than cookies and junk. :)

some melons and grapes may give tummy aches but other then that.... 5 servings a day is what is good. An apple counts as two servings a day.....so does a bannana

Fruits & vegetable are so good ,having natural sugar in it, is not at all harmful,Its excellent than other sugary stuff that kids want to eat.I believe they dont have any stomach issues like constipation or aches.I heard that if you give any fruit 1 hr prior to any meal thats really good too.

my daughter has half fruit at 2 meals,(by that i mean 50% of the meal is fruit) and a salad or raw veggies with dinner, but dinner is more like 75/25, 75 %something else like pizza or macaroni, something comforting

I give my kids (4 yo twins) fruit w/ b, L and dinner - after they have eaten their other food or in the case of breakfast sometimes berries mixed in w/ their plain yogurt. I also give it to them as a snack - but w/ a protein too (pb or nuts or cheese).

I think if they're eating enough other food and aren't getting runny BM's then you shouldn't worry about it too much. good luck!

I agree that loving fruit is a good thing! Definitely better than them wanting other sugary snacks! I do have to limit some fruits (blueberries and grapes) with my ODS, since the upset his tummy. But other than that, he gets as much as he wants. He eats a good balance of other foods, too, so it doesn't bother me at all. There are far worse things he could eat, so it's not on my list of concerns;)
