My son is 26 months old. He does not drink milk anymore since we took the bottle away. He drinks ALOT of water though. Some times as much as 40 oz in a day. Is that normal? How much does your 2 year old drink?
Thanks!

Water intake and what is appropriate or too much... really depends on the child's weight/activity/body temperature etc. and how much water is fine or not...for a given individual....

The rule of thumb for a child, is to drink no more than half or 1/3 their body weight.

In some cases, water intoxication can happen.

Don't give juices. Juices are not as healthy as the fruit itself.

Is he getting calcium from any other food source? Or milk-fats from any other food source? Milk-fats.. is an essential nutrient for brain development... in toddlers.

all the best,
Susan

My son is only 18 months, but that's probably close to what he drinks. He can't have milk, so he only ever drinks water. Occasionally, we give him watered down juice.

As long as he does not drink so much that he doesn't eat, he's fine. Besides, what's normal for your son may not be for another baby. Everybody is different and has different needs. If you are concerned that he doesn't drink milk, don't be. Cows milk is not a healthy food for humans. Please go to www.pcrm.org and put dairy into the search box. Also explore www.strongbones.org and www.notmilk.com.

40 oz sounds like a lot.

Adding it all up, I'd guess my son drinks about 20 oz a day of water, milk, and juice. I could be off. Maybe 30 oz. I will give it all a measure tomorrow.

My 2 1/2 year old drinks 4 oz of milk for breakfast. Throughout the day he drinks four drinks of 1 oz juice/5 oz water mixture. Then for dinner he drinks another 6 oz of milk. So 34 oz of liquid all together. Hope this helps.

I wish my son would drink water! He'd rather sit in a timeout! He is 27 months old and drinks about 16 ounces of juice a day and about the same of milk. Occasional he'll drink some of my water but not much. I agree that it is going to depend on your child as to whether or not it is normal. Our pediatrician suggested adding a little flavoring to Matthews milk (prior to him liking plain white milk) in order for him to drink it from a cup vs a bottle. Maybe you could give that a try if you'd like him to drink some milk. We used strawberry Nesquik syrup- just enough to barely tint the milk- and that began his love for milk! He still likes strawberry milk now and again too.
Just an idea!
Good luck!
