How Much Milk Do Your Kids Drink

I have two boys ages 1 and 3.5 years old. I am serious when I say that we are almost going through a gallon a day. Is that crazy or normal. We have tried to reduce the amount my 3 year old drinks but he loves milk and either drinks that, water or OJ. He really isn't into any other sugary/juicy drinks.

What can I do next?

I don't think for a minute that drinking milk is bad for kids. Some kids like milk and that's all they want and other kids won't drink more than on cereal once or twice per week.

We have 4 in this family and go through nearly a gallon a day. It is about 7/8 Great Value brand chocolate milk and the other 1/8 is while 2% Great Value milk that I use in cooking and for dunking Oreo's...lol.

I have an 18 month old and 4.5 year old , we are not home all day. We go through 1 gallon ever other day.

On the weekends when we are home we have gone through 1 gallon a day and that is just the kids drinking it.

How are they eating? How is thier health? How is thier personality (hyper etc).. if all that is fine.. have at it.. if not, you might want to reduce the amount of milk.

Good luck

My son is now 11 and there are days when we NEVER drink milk. I have never been someone who never thought milk was necessary for kid's development.. I just don't buy that. However, when we do drink milk (and my son does happen to like it) I try and give him only organic and even raw (when we can find it) so to answer your question. I'd say we go through a 1/2 gallon OR quart every two weeks.. Unless on occasion when he does enjoy making a smoothie that does require some milk.. Otherwise, we are a water family..

I buy a gallon of milk a week for myself and three kids (5,4,1) and my husband drinks a half gallon of almond milk a week. I use this for cooking too. How are they eating? I don't think milk is bad but it is not a replacement for nutritious food. If I allow my kids to have a lot of milk they won't be hungry enough to eat so we don't drink so much of it. It really isn't necessary.

My son doesn't drink more than a few sips a day. he had a bad allergy till he was two and just never developed a taste for it. My daughter will drink a few cups a day, but we are mostly water drinkers in this house.

Wow! That's a lot!
Not a milk fan. My son prefers water with meals, too.
He does have Greek yogurt & cheese every day and maybe milk on cereal or a glass of 1% chocolate milk here and there.
What does your pediatrician say? How many ounces do you think they each get a day? I think three 8 oz. servings should be about it--maybe O. more for the O. year old.

My daughter has always liked milk. When she was growing up, she would go through a couple of gallons of whole milk a week - plus all the undiluted fruit juice she wanted and an occasional soda. And no, she never had a weight problem.

Me and my son are milk drinkers. Organic.
Anyway, then the rest of the family eats cereal. That includes milk.
We go through a lot too, in a given week.

Other than that, we just drink water.
We don't even really have juice or soft drinks in the house.
Only sometimes. It is not a regular purchase.

My 18 yr old daughter loves milk ( I don't drink it at all and hubby just uses it on cereal) and we (she) go through 1 gallon a week.

She is healthy as a horse, athletic and will drink milk with meals. Her other drink of choice is water, some Gatorade and OJ.

Daughter and I are not soda fans but my hubby will drink 2 cokes a day. YUCK

I cook with milk but I don't drink it.
I never liked the taste.
Between my son (he's 14) and husband we go through about 4 gallons a week.

When my boys were little, they did drink a lot of milk. We, as a family, still go through about a gallon and a half a week.

That said, they were not allowed to have it to carry around with them. Milk is for nutrition, not a "lovey." We had mealtimes and snack times. Milk and juice was offered then. Water was offered if they asked for something between.

My son started 1st grade this year so he drinks milk with breakfast and with dinner. My DD recently turned 2, for the last year she was drinking whole milk while the rest of us drink 1% and milk seemed to last a lot longer. Since she switched to the same milk my DS drinks we go through 6 gallons every 2 weeks. In the summer when my son is home all day its more.

It never ceases to amazed me the amount of milk they consume but I would much rather it be milk then juice.

My 3 year old drinks about a quart of goat milk every 2 or 3 days and it is low fat. She would drink more, but we water it down for her. My 20 month old drinks Neocate Jr, and he probably drinks 24 oz a day since he is allergic to dairy. That does seem like a lot, especially because it is so filling and cause constipation, but if everything is flowing well, then it should be good.

Pretty much none. DD just has never been a fan of cows (or soy or almond for that matter). I guess she takes a sip or two st daycare, since it's the only drink offered at mealtime - but honestly she will go the day without drinking much, rather than touch milk. At home it's mostly water for us. A gallon of milk lasts us about 10 days...

My five year old drinks a carton at school and then usually another glass at some point when she is home. So probably around 16oz a day. Maybe a bit more.

My 2 year old has two or three glasses of milk a day. Probably 20 to 24oz.

They have one glass of juice a day if they want it and the rest of the time they have water (or water based...tea, lemonade in the summer, etc.).

I think two children going through a gallon of milk a day is too much milk but if you and your doctor are sure it isn't causing harm then do what makes the boys happy!

My kids usually get milk or juice at all the meal times. Then in between it's water or juice/water (40% mix) and sometimes chocolate milk. We usually go through 1-2 gallons per week for the three of them (I drink skim only). A gallon a day sounds extreme...but how much are you and hubby drinking? If this is just for the two kids, I do think that sounds like a lot. But if they are on the right track size wise and eat fine, then I think you are okay. It's when they stop eating because they are full or the doctors get concerned about weight that I would reconsider.

My kids drink a quart a day between the two of them. So, in THEORY, if I didn't drink any milk at all or cook with it at all, then a gallon would last us 4 days. Realistically, it lasts 2.5 - 3 days. I keep both of my girls at 16 oz per day, or a little less if they don't actually drink it all.

I would say that's great! Milk is really good and the less sugary drinks they consume the better. My kids usually drink at least 2 glasses a day, and that's with us being gone the majority of the day because both my husband and I work full time. If we were home all day, it would probably be a lot more between cereal, lunch and dinner.
