The carpet store told me to vacuum daily first going in one direction then going the other direction. I would try vacuuming more frequently then maybe you will not have wash the carpet as much:). I thought that washing the carpet pulls out the stain master chemicals that prevent it from getting stained in the first place.

When you wash your carpet with solvents and soaps, it actually causes it to be more dirty! It traps everything in the carpet. It's best to clean with a carpet steam cleaner. We use it on our carpets and only have to clean it once a month. When we were washing it so much, we were having to wash the carpet all the time.

Hi Ariel:

I have severe allergy to dust mites. One thing I learned is that I can NOT shampoo my carpet, because the moist will result in more dust mites. We vacuum our house thoroughly about once every 10 days.

I've been DYING to do my carpets. Waiting for the right time/weather to get at it. It makes me feel SO MUCH BETTER when I have clean carpets.

Make sure you get as much soap out of the carpet. That turns into a dirt magnet if you don't.

Too much washing will age your carpet faster. If you're getting that much dirt, sounds like your vacuum isn't doing it's job. You should probably vacuum more frequently. If you really feel itchy.... like allergy itchy look into getting a Rainbow system. It vacuums and shampoos and does a stellar job at reducing allergens. http://www.rainbowsystem.com/rainbowsystem/ My neighbor's kids are allergic to everything and she swears by hers. They'll do an in-home demo that will knock your socks off.

I don't think you should wash your carpet that often. I agree with JC, you probably need to vacuum better. I have and love my Roomba, but I just don't think it's powerful enough to really suck up the dirt. My guess is that's what you're sucking up when you're washing. The Roomba is great in-between vacuums, I use mine daily. But at least once a week use a real strong vacuum. And try to go 6 weeks in between washings for now.

I don't know, but I loooove the way my rug feels after I shampoo it! Oh, those first few steps across it in bare feet are heaven.

Unfortunately, due to health issues I haven't shampooed it in ages and ages. :(

I guess that's not helpful, but at any rate, I get where you're coming from.
