How Old Was Your Child When....

My mom said that I paid for my new tricycle with my binkie, so maybe 2 years old. My first son (a little over 2 years), it was an accident...the dog got to the pacifier and I couldn't find the second one that fell behind the crib. Well when I gave him the pacifier he would not take it and went to sleep without it. (He did have a special blanket that he sleeps with, so I think that helped. He likes to rub the silky side) My second son (16ish months), I cut off the nipple. He has an attitude though, if you take something away from him then he does not want it back. Anyways it was kind of easy because 'how dare I do that to him' that he didn't want a pacifier any more. (Same as my first, my second also had a blanket he liked to hold)

My son was 3 days old without the binky!

6 months. It was harder on me than him. During the first few weeks, he would cry and OOOOHHHH the thought of just giving in and giving it back was so tempting. But I held fast and after 2 weeks, it's as if it never existed.

My 3 boys were all done before age 1.

My son was 2.5 years. It was a little later than I would have liked, but it worked for us.

Funny you should ask. . . My son turned 2 in April and loved his binky, we have been bink free for a week! We had talked about getting rid of it and felt pressure from family members, but didn't think we were going to get rid of it this soon. One night he was having a horrible terrible two moment and threw the bink, so my hubby took it and didn't give it back. To my surprise he fell asleep without it, so that night I went around the house and put them all away. He looked for them the next day, but again napped and continued with his day. Since then he hasn't had it. We did deal with biting for a couple of days but not from aggression. I think he was so used to that oral reflex. It was spontaneous and much less painful than I imagined it would.

Exactly 3 years old. He only used it for naps and sleeping. When he got rid of his pacifier, he stopped napping!

He traded in the "paci" for a pair of goldfish and never looked back. The goldfish are turning two at the end of the month.

18 months. I did it gradual starting a few months before hand. At first, only bobo (binky) in the crib & car.... then only at night time in the crib (no naps) & the car. I can't remember which I took away first, night time or car .. but I do remember the car was the hardest!! lol...

3.5! At that point my daughter was only using it for naps and bedtime. One day, right before Christmas I handed her her Ba and she looked at me and said "I don't need that. I'm grown up now." Thee next day we went out of town so I brought her Ba. Later that night I handed it to her and she looked at me really funny and said "Why did you bring that?" I was amazed. She never asked for it again.

I had tried a few things earlier to get rid of it and nothing worked. She saw a dentist around 3 and I mentioned the pacifier. He said not to worry about it and that it is really important to her and something she cares a lot about. Taking it from her before she was ready could be worse than what it would do to her teeth. Sure enough, 1/2 year later her bite has gone back to normal.

We took my oldest son's away right after he turned 1 - cold turkey. I was worried that we were doing the wrong thing and that he would be traumatized by us just taking it away. He only used it for naps and nighttime and I think he only asked for it for a few days after it was gone.

He's 6 1/2 now and doesn't remember the "trauma" of losing his binky!

My daughter's was taken by my mom at 2.5 years old. She still knows it is on a shelf at her Nonni's house everytime we visit there. My son will be three in September, and he still had the binky. We are trying to limit it to naps/nighttime, but he seems to find ones around the house and will walk around all day with them. He is a very loud child, strong-willed, with good tantrums. Therefore, we are allowing him to keep the binky a little longer just to "pacify" him. I imagine by age 3, we will start to take it away.

Mine weren't into them, but I have a friend who had a great idea:

When her son was 2.5 and still attached to his binky to the point that it was impeding his language development and ability to communicate, they had a ceremony, which they prepared him in advance for. They wrote thank yous and good byes to the binky and placed them in helium balloons, tied the binky to it and set it free!

He handled it really well, as he was a part of the ceremony and he got to let balloons go. He's 9 now and doin' great.

My son quit on his own at about 6 months.
My daughter LOVED hers, and she gathered them all up in a big gallon sizes ziploc bag and traded them at the bakery for some toys ON her 2nd birthday. She was so proud... :)
