How to Dispose of Cooking Oil?

Updated on July 25, 2013

I have it in my cask iron dutch oven. I do clean it with a skimmer after I use it...when I deep fry. It needs to be discarded. I remember the days when I would toss it in a coffee can but I no longer buy coffee in cans and thus, don't have a disposable can.
How the heck do I get rid of this stuff? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks. I found out I can recycle it by putting it in any sealed container and dropping it off at a FOG recycling plant! Awesome!

When it is cooled, in an empty milk carton or jug.
Then, put that container in several old plastic grocery bags, knotting it closed, so no leakage.

What EVER you do with it - DO NOT put it down your kitchen drain! Pour the oil in a container you don't care about and put it out in the trash. Put it in a Ziploc bag...put it in a to-go container that is solid...

I don't know if AZ has a "oil recycling" center or not. I know that restaurants like Outback - have an oil receptacle in the back to put the oil in.

While people may suggest to put it in "hot" - that water/fluid does NOT stay HOT and will end up further down your drain as a HUGE block of GUNK...you'll be calling a plumber and paying $200 to have an extended drain clean....

DO NOT DO IT!!!! It's not worth it!!

My hubby has his own method, he pours it into an aluminum pie pan and then sticks it in the fridge. It hardens pretty fast, then he dumps it into a plastic bag and throws it out.

We pour ours into an old glass pickle jar or something like it and keep it in the fridge, where it hardens. When the jar is full, we toss it.

My son sometimes will cut the top off a coke can with a can opener and poors it in there. If it's too much we take it out and dump in beside the house outside. I am sure it's not the greatest for the ground but don't know what else to do with it. If we let it cool we will put it in the trash with paper towels.

Let it cool and pour it into any disposable container, then throw it away.
If you recycle ALL of your containers then just pour it into a ceramic or glass bowl, let it cool and then pour or scoop it directly into the trash and wash the bowl and use it again.

We take it out to the back of the woods and dump it on our yard waste/compost pile.

Our water sanitation department says that oil in the drain will stink and gunk up. They suggest that you pour the oil into a paper lined can and then sop the oil and throw away the paper.

If you place oil in a container and set it out on the curb, they won't pick it up. Once they toss it in the back of the truck, their crusher then crushes the container and the oil will leak all over the streets.

The plumber in my family would disown me if he knew this, but I pour it VERY slowly down a running disposal with very cold water!

I keep jars for things like this! Spaghetti sauce, pickles, etc. I do not keep this junk in the fridge, though! I wait for it to cool (room temp), pour into the jar, replace the lid, and toss in the trash.

We pour our cool oil into a used glass jar with lid, tighten the lid, and toss it in the trash. On occasion when it's just a small amount (breakfast sausage remnants, for instance), I add Dawn to it with very cold water and pour down the disposal, little by little. Our plumber told us cold water will help it go down without clogging pipes. :)

If you have a gravel driveway, you can pour the old cooking oil on it.
It'll help keep the dust down.

I usually pour mine into an old plastic milk carton and disquise it in a garbage bag among the other trash. Someone once told me to pour it in a throw away container and then add in cat liter to absorb the oil, then discard it in the trash. At least this way, it is not dripping out when you toss it in the trash. I never actually tried it, so I don't know how well it will work.
