How to Find a Good Babysitter

We moved to Plymouth Meeting about 6 months ago and my husband and I have still not been out for an evening alone. I really need to be able to go out to dinner with my husband where neither one of us are fussing with or worried that our two and a half year old daughter is going to misbehave.
My problem is that we still have not met many people here and I don't have the benefit of living in a neighborhood with a lot of neighborhood babysitters around. I'm not sure where to begin looking for a trustworthy babysitter. I'm really scared to use somone I don't know, but that is the problem, we don't know anyone. Does anyone have advice for me? Thanks.

What can I do next?

I would go to the local high school or college in the area and ask them. A lot of times they have job boards, or newspaper postings for the students. I would have them come and babysit while you are home the first time or so until you are comfortable. You may also want to try some of the local churches.- See if they have youth groups- they usually have a good group of kids.

E.,

I moved to Collegeville, PA just 3 years ago and ran into the same issue.

My husband and I went with ABC Nanny. They are a great resource for finding a sitter as well.

Are you working? I have had good success hiring teachers from my daughter's day care - maybe also check out local colleges (CHestnut Hill College and Temple-Ambler are close by.) Even if you're not working - I assume you'll be enrolling your daughter in preschool soon - so that should be a good resource for you. maybe also get involved in activities offered through either the plymouth township/whitemarsh township recreation departments - it would be a place for you to meet other moms and find out about other sources of babysitters. Another source might be the public library. Once you find someone - you shoudl check references, etc. I have also seen a service sittercity.com - that might be another source. Good luck to you.
