We have had a "part time pet" lately. A cat comes to visit us and I don't think he is a stray because he has a collar, I think he just gets let out during the day and wonders around. Well we usually let him in so the kids can see him and it is a really sweet cat but I was cleaning my children's closet today and when I came out of the closet and into the rest of the apartment I smelled cat pee that was so strong I almost threw up. I never smelled it before till now and the cat hasn't been over in a few weeks. I don't have any idea of where it would be coming from cause I smell it all over now. What can I do to get rid of this awful smell? I know I'm not ever letting this cat in again but now I'm stuck with this smell...what do I do to get rid of it?

What can I do next?

This is a great recipe for removing cat urine odor from carpet
mix 3 parts water with one part vinegar and saturate the spot. Dry thoroughly using paper towels
Once dry, sprinkle the area with baking soda. Next mix ¾ cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide solution with one tsp. dish detergent and sprinkle over the baking soda. Try this first on a small inconspicuous area of the carpet to make sure the hydrogen peroxide won’t discolor your carpet. Next, use your fingers or an old brush to work the baking soda in.
Allow this to dry and vacuum it up. If there’s still a slight odor when done, lather, rinse and repeat.

for remove the smell from the laundry
Use this method on your clothing, bedding, rugs or anything you think you can stuff in the washer (not including your cat). Simply add ¼ cup apple cider vinegar along with your normal laundry detergent.

it works

At Pet Smart they sell a few products. One is called Petzine and the other Natures Miracle. I've used both. They work well.

S.,
Since you don't know exactly where the "spot" is, I would suggest you professionaly steam clean your carpets. You can have a company(Dalworth) do this or you can rent a steam cleaner and do it yourself. The urine is probably seeped into the carpet and the May heat is making it smell worse. :/

If the cat has not been fixed, then he is marking his territory. That smell is much stronger than just regular cat pee. I'm not sure what to tell you to do to get rid of it, but just wanted to let you know that if that's the case, it might not be on the carpet. He could have sprayed it on door frames, or anything at his level to mark it as his. Good luck getting rid of it.
