My son has had warts and we've gone to the dermatologist twice. Most of them are gone, but 2 remain. I would take him back (and I still may), but it is 110 per visit and we have to go twice (visit plus follow-up). The doctor is charging for a procedure rather than an office visit, so the money is applied to their deductible.
Does anyone know an effective OTC remedy?

Well, I have no personal experience. But, I read an article from either Parents or Parenting mag. that said to get duct-tape. Cut out a circle a little bigger than the wart - gently but firmly place on top of wart. Leave and/or refresh tape if it gets yucky until wart has disappeared. Don't know if it works or not, but I assume it'd be safe since it appeared in the mag. Might give it a whirl! :)

I too WAS a wart sufferer, along with one of my brother and my mom. I had them all over my hands, I remember being young and thinking "no boy will every hold my hand."
I read through all the comments briefly and did not see my solution, I tried them all and none worked for me. My mom read to put raw garlic on them for 24 hours. One 3 day weekend my mom, my brother and myself decided to put it to the test. We took garlic, crushed it, then bandaged it in place with gause and bandage tape. Slept with it on. We blistered and we did not feel well for the next day. That was becuase the garlic was going in and killing the virus that casues warts. After the blister went away the wart was gone! FOR GOOD! I have not scars and you would never guess that my hands once bore the huge, ugly warts that they did. My mom even had warts on her feet that she did not treat and they too slowly disapeared.
It doesn't smell the best, but it works and it is cheep. GOOD LUCK.
This may sound crazy, but if you already have it around the house it will save you on the Dr. visit.
Wrap a piece of Duct Tape around the area. Apply after the skin is completely dry after a bath/shower and leave it on for 24 to 48 hours.
I have heard that the wart litterally FALLS OFF.
If it does not work with the first application, apply again and this time get it wet with one squirt of a spray bottle of water before applying. (Stick the tape to itself tightly (but not too tightly) around the area.
Try it; you really have nothing to lose (but the warts).

My kid's pediatrician office recommended and believe it or not, the duct tape really works. It's an old remedy so just be patient and it will save you money. Wrap a piece of duct tape around the wart for 24 hours then remove and reapply tape at the same time every day. Something about the duct tape removes a layer of the wart each time you remove it.
My 17 year old daughter had a wart on the bottom of her toe and she thought I was crazy when I told her about the duct tape. After 2 weeks we almost gave up (but didn't) so we tried soaking her foot, at night, in warm water with epson salt for about 20 minutes and on the 3rd day, before soaking, the wart litterally fell off. It was on the tape when she removed it.

Hi-i am a Pediatrician and I know that they sell the freezing spray that we use in the office over the counter now.It is very easy and it only stings a little and is a little cold so you can try that then the duct tape to suffocate the virus.You might have to go to a pharmacy like Doughertys (Preston and Royal) to get it, but its much cheaper than going into the office for a visit!

compound W with a band aid worked great for my daughter's wart in between her fingers.
I've also heard of putting a pc. of duct tape over the wart and leaving it on for several days and then replacing it until the wart "dies" or starts "peeling" off...
it is gross but works!
Walmart sells some wart remover that works great, my little brother used to get warts on his hands alot. The applicator looks like a fingernail polish brush... you just brush a little on each night until the wart is gone. It's not painful either.
It depends on what kind of wart. If it's the deeper Planter's wart, I'd say you have to go to the doctor. If it's the lesser kind, then try the over-the-counter wart remover you can buy at the drug store. There's one you can buy that'll freeze off the wart.
try the new freeze type wart remover, that is what your doctor is using. It is not as cheap as the acid type, but it works better. good luck
my husband went repeatedly and one on his hand kept coming back... he tried 2 things, apple cider vinegar on a cotton ball over night and duct tape during the day. It came off and never came back.
The spray that you get OTC is NOT the same as liquid nitrogen that is found at the doctors.
I tried it and nothing happened.
I agree (and I have had 10+ planters warts) if it is on the finger OTC brush on should work. On the feet, save yourself the pain and trouble and head to the Dermo.
And WHY are you going back for a F/U....That is the biggest crock of ****. If the doctor does his job in the first place then you won't ever have to see him again. The removed wart is no different than a scab. He is taking your money for unnecessary appointments. I have had more warts removed than I can count from my doctor and I have NEVER been asked to come back for a follow up. I always get them burned off as opposed to frozen off.
I had a couple of smaller warts on my leg and I used the OTC freeze stuff. It got rid of them with out any problem. I think you might have different results with larger ones or you may have to do it several times to get the whole thing.
I to was a wart suffer. As a child my mom would drag me in to the Dr. My mom wol dhave to plug my nose while I plugged my ears. Back then they were burned off. The smell and the noise upset me. Not to mention the numbing shot really hurt. I have had about 15 burnt off. Then as an adult I had them frozen off, without numbing. It only stung a second.
Well my son was about 7 when I noticed he had them too. Oh no! I really didnt want him to go through the same thing I did. I read if you leave the wart alone it will go away on its own. Its a virus and it's spread thru scratching and rubbing. So,I told my son leave them alone. Over the year or so they went away. It does take some time and you have to really trust they will leave it alone. Someone told me to put duct tape over it. Just don't rub on the tape and adjatate it. Good Luck.
Ps. I havent had a reaccurance in over ten years and my son's are all gone and have not come back.
