My husband gets chronic cold sores. I would say about every month to month and a half. Does anyone know what causes these? Is there some kind of vitamin or supplement he could take to keep from not getting them? Is this something he could see his Dr. for and get a prescription? He usually uses Aleve right away when he feels one coming on. I really hate it, because I have to go a week/sometimes closer to two before I can kiss him. Help this Mama with her husband ;)

What can I do next?

I too have the wonderful virus that causes cold sores. I was told to take a L-lysine vitamin daily, and that does help to curb the outbreaks. When he does feel one coming on, put neosporin plus pain relief on it, and it starts healing. There are also a lot of other ointments that help too. I am also an indepenedent consultant with Arbonne International, and we have two products specifically for the lips. One is a vitamin that is called lip service (has lysine and other botanicals in it), and the other is an herbal lip ointment. I have started taking the vitamin, and so long as I take it daily, I have not had any outbreaks. If you would like more information on those products, send me an email, or check out my web site at www.GetHealthNow.myarbonne.com Good luck! I know the hassle of yucky cold sores.

Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (not the same virus that causes genital herpes). Once a person has this virus, it never goes away. Outbreaks will occur from time to time throughout his life. There are some medications that can help prevent outbreaks - like Valtrex or Lysine (aka L-lysine) or there are some that help once a cold sore appears (or just before - most people can tell when one is about to appear) like Zovirax. I would have him talk to his doctor about what will work best for him. Good luck!

I have the cold sore virus, too. I was at a point where I had one almost always. As soon as one cleared up, anther started to appear. I tried L-lysine, and it made them appear less often. My doctor ended up prescribing me Acyclovir (Zovirax) which I take daily to prevent them. I still get 4 or 5 a year though.

I used to take one Lysine pill a day to keep them away. I liked to think it helped, but I would still get them occasionally. I've never had them as often as your husband, but my mother gets them often and does have a prescription for them. Going to a doctor would be my suggestion.

When you feel a cold sore coming on, try to remember what you last ate. Foods can trigger an outbreak. Try this experiment. For the next 24 to 48 hours avoid all foods containing the amino acid "Arginine" which promotes the growth of herpes viruses. They are: carob, chocolate, coconut. dairy products, chicken, gelatin, oats, wheat and white flour, soybeans, almonds, cashews, refined sugar and citrus. Instead, eat foods high in another amino acid, "Lysine" which inhibits herpes viruses: eggs, fish, lima beans, vegetables, potatoes and red meat. Also 1 to 2 cayenne capsules helps shut down the herpes zoster virus. (Info obtained from The feel Good Cookbook by Jonell West Francis)

Cold sores are caused by a virus in your body. You can never get rid of the virus but you can control the cold sores. First, the virus is a family of Herpes virus, which has the same symptoms...breakouts are from stress. Out breaks from cold sores are usually caused by stress. The only way to control them is by calming yourself as soon as you feel one coming on. I lay down and force myself to relax. If I relax for about a half hour I can feel the cold sore stop growing. The more you stress about the sore the bigger it gets. Once I get it to stop growing I use Camphophic? there's is also Camex. Usually anything will cause it to dry up but the secret is to stop it from becoming larger. Remember, the minute he feels the pulse of one coming, go lay down and relax - you do have control over them. Cold sores are from stress.

There are topical medications that help, but his best bet may be getting a prescription for Valtrex. Cold sores are caused by a virus that lurks inside you, waiting for a chance to come forth. He may be stressed out or not taking good care of himself, weakening his immune system and not keeping that virus at bay.
