How to Home Preschool?

My DS just turned 4 years old a few weeks ago. With the current economic situation we're in I cannot afford to send him to a preschool or MDO program. So I will be doing preschool at home. Any ideas? If you did/do home preschool how did you do it? He's a very bright little boy and we are already working on numbers/letters etc. I want it to be fun but educational. Any suggestions or advice would be extremely appriciated! Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your advice. I found some books at the library and have been searching online for ideas. My biggest hurdle now is getting organized.

Hello J.,

Dollar Tree has the alphabet and number chart you can hang for him to look and practice with.

I strongly recommend the leapfrog videos. they're awsome!

Look on-line for resources or go to book stores - Half Price Books has a home-schooling section. I also bought a preschool workbook from WalMart that is great. I'm "home-schooling" my 3 year old, who loves to learn and read. We set aside about an hour each day to sit down together and go over numbers (she can count to 12) shapes and colors. We also read together twice a day, and explore/ investigate things we talk about on the internet (she wanted to know what sound a zebra makes!!). We also have painting days, craft days, etc and for these I usually get ideas from the internet. I usually incorporated a lot of our learning in other things we do during the day as well - count out cheerios, ask her what color top she wants to wear, etc - this reaffirms our lessons.
Hope this helps.

RECOVERING THE LOST TOOLS OF LEARNING is a book you might want to pick up. These years are the time to memorize and play with "chemistry" (my son loved the soda and vinegar) and physics (backyard ballistics is fun, too). If you do puzzles, go ahead and tell him they are too old for him and if he has an aptitude, you will find him solving ones designed for older children; but if he cannot solve them, they will get him thinking in a different way and it will be an opportunity for you to help him think them through.

try teacher supply stores. that's where we have found some great supplies to supplement what my oldest needed other than school, as well as preK things for my youngest.

There are a lot of sources out there. If you want to look at some different curriculum the Arlington Homeschool Bookfair is next weekend. http://www.homeschoolbookfair.org/
Very informative. My suggestions would be to check out the My Father's World booth and Sonlight booth. There are a lot of other boothes there as well. My Father's World is not as costly as Sonlight but it seems like a great curriculum.

Five In A Row is another quite a few people seem to like.

I hope that helps.

The best books I have found are the Series called "what your Kindergartner needs to know" then the "what your first grader needs to know" and they go on from there. Get the book and just follow along and pick up things at walmart to supplement what that book says or from wherever. the homeschool bookfair in Arlington is next weekend, but most things can get kinda pricey. THe "what your ....." can be found at half price books used most often. You can also use the local library to research and check out some homeschool books that will help you get started with out alot of investment to start with. You can also google around and see what comes up under scope and sequence for pre-school, especially with Abeka.
Good luck,
L.
