How to prevent sneezing and coughing in newborn?

Hi, I have a new 2 week old baby. She had been sneezing on and off, which I know is common. She actually has been sneezing less today, if at all . . . but I did notice her cough a few times. It sounds like a sneeze, only it's out of her mouth (I don't know if that makes sense). She doesn't sound congested or anything (only a little from her nose sometimes). I'm just wondering if this is normal, like the sneezing, or if I should take her in to the doctor. Other than the sneezing and occasional cough, she's fine so far. Thanks in advance for your help!

Summary

The sneezing is totally normal, since newborn can't blow their nose this is how they clear their airway. Try to run a cool mist vaporizer at night to see if it help on the cough, if the cough gotten worst, consult a doctor.

We've got an 8-week old who was doing the same occasional sneezing and some dry coughing. The lack of rain has made it so dry around here that his nasal passages and the mucus in them was drying up and kind of sticking. It should be flowing smoothly and keeping the little nose and throat moist.

We loaded up on distilled water and have been running a cool mist vaporizer over his bassinette at night. It did the trick and he's been breathing perfectly ever since. Hope it's just that simple for you, too.

It could be something; it could be nothing. Don't be shy about calling the nurse line at your pediatrician's office. That's exactly what it's there for. It's usually free during work hours.

The sneezing is totally normal - since they can't blow their nose this is how they clear their airway. My daughter still sneezes a lot and she's 4 months old. As long as the cough doesn't have anything behind it - wheezing, congestion, etc. it's probably fine but I would csll the pediatrician. That's what they are there for. My doc has a 24 hour nurse on call and they saved me several trips to the ER when my daughter was a newborn!

Sounds normal to me. They still need to clear out their lungs a bit. Just watch it for any other symptoms.

Could be early signs of asthma... Our daughter had asthma and it was mostly a cough cause she was not getting much air. If it went on too long she would begin to wheeze.. We had to nebulize her for long periods of time..

If she is diagnosed, I would suggest you get a air filter for her room and make it as dust free as possible in your home..

The good news? Our daughter pretty much grew out of this by middle school.

It's so hard to know what to do with babies because they are so tiny and can go downhill so quickly. I would try some saline drops in her nose and keep an eye on her for one more day. If the coughing gets worse or more frequent, I would probably call the doctor. Unfortunately, if she has contracted a summer cold, there probably isn't much you can do other than saline and a bulb syringe anyway, but better safe than sorry. I hope your little one feels better soon!

My daughter went into the hospital as a newborn and stayed in a breathing ten for 6 days. Then she had to take oral meds and breathing treatments for years until I figured out that I was making her sick with the products I used in my home. Most baby products have formaldehyde releasers in them, and cleaning and laundry products are full of toxins. I switched stores and she's been healthy ever since. I can help you if you want to look into the product line I use. Just let me know. My blog is http://jenniferbaird.blogspot.com
