I accidentally burnt rice in my stainless steel pot. I got the petrified glob out but still have black crust on the bottom of my pot. I have soaked and scrubbed my brains out but still can't get it cleaned. I prefer not to use harsh chemicals but will as a last resort. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I went the baking soda route. It worked wonderful. I really don't like using harsh chemicals so I really appreciated your advise. THANK YOU ALL for helping!!

I've done it and found that taking a little dishwasher soap(granular) and water in pan. Heat on stove and take a little steel wool to scrub it takes it off.
Also, best way to take off soap scum and hard water deposits in shower/bath is to take
GO-JO orange hand cleaner and a soft scrubber. Takes it right off and no harsh fumes. Rinse well. Found this also when husband comes home filthy from work (railroad) and takes a shower in fresh clean shower.He is covered with grease, gas, diesel and creasolt.. ARGGG.
I did the same thing a couple of weeks ago the 1st time I used. Looked up the company on the internet and it said use Barkeeper's Friend. It is like Comet/Ajax ect. but works wonders. I got the black stuff out and is shiny just like new. I highly recommend it and have used it on my other pots and pans that are looking grungy. I also used it on my stove top and it also got the caked on baked on stuff off too. May take a little persistence but it works!

Put a 1/3, 2/3 mixture of Clorox and water in your pot and gently simmer it. It will clean your pot!
Soft Scrub works really well on my stainless pots and pans, better than a brillo pad or any other method I've tried (including baking soda). Any time I get a burnt spot or area from cooked on food I let it soak, scrape off what I can and then scrub it with the Soft Scrub. Sometimes I will let that sit if needed but usually it comes off quickly. I love it!
In a Family Fun magazine there was an article about naturally safe cleaning solutions. It says to use cream of tartar for aluminum cookware (maybe it will work on the stainless steel). It says to fill cookware with water and add 2 tablespoons of cream of tartar for each quart of water. Bring to a boil,then simmer for 15 minutes. Pour out the water and then wash and dry.

I've done that before too. :-) Fill the pan with water to just above the level of the gunk, then pour in enough baking soda to completely cover the gunk. Bring the water just to a boil, then let it cool. Everything should scrub right out.
take about a cup of white vinegar and half a cup of water, bring to a boil then turn off the heat. Let it sit for about an hour. The black stuff should either lift off or be soft enough to scrub out.

I have 2 ideas to try. Try sprinkling some cream of tarter on the pot and sprinkle some water on it just enough to wet it, then let it set overnight.
The other idea I heard about was to put a dryer sheet in the pot, cover it with water and let it soak overnight.
One more...pour some coca cola in the pot, let it soak overnight.

Hi E. - I would try 'Bar Keepers Friend'. I have used it in the past for the same situation - although I burned popcorn - but it worked like a charm! It is a powdered cleanser in a can - sort of like 'Comet' - and you should be able to find it at the gorcery store or target.
I would try some sort of oven cleaner. If it can work on the nasty things that get burned into the bottom of an oven, surely it could work on burned on rice.
Stainless is very sturdy. Use an SOS pad. It will look new again!
put a spoon full of cream of tarter in pot and enough water to let it boil for a few min. the black gunk should wash out you might have to do this a couple of times but i have good results with it Georgia
I just recently heard baking soda helps if you let it soak and I have bought this kitchen brush specifically for scrubbing stainless pans and It workd very well, I believe I bought it at target with the kitchen brushes. it does just scrub that off without hurting your pan.
tooth paste make sure its paste little water and scratch pad. If that doesn't work try a product called cameo You can find it at wal-mart or Price chopper with the comet. Good luck!!!
Try using a baking soda/powder paste (water & baking soda/powder mixed to a paste consistency) with a paper towel. If that doesn't work, try putting ketchup in the bottom of the pan and using a paper towel to gently rub on it. Hope you have good luck with one of them.
There's this stuff called Scour Off with the Shaklee GET CLEAN line that is made of cherry pits ( it smells great) and it is awesome on scrubbing stuff like pots and pans and rust and grime...without harsh chemicals. Safe for all and it works.

Have you tried the Magic Eraser. I love those things. They get most everything off when nothing else will. You can use them on most anything. Good luck, hope this helps!
Try using baking soda and a damp non-scratch scouring pad...they work wonders! You can also heat water with baking soda to boiling and then let it sit for a while and try scrubbing it then. There are some good stainless steel cleaners, and if you find Barkeeper's Friend it is AWESOME. Hope that helps!
Hi E. M., I clean my cookware by putting baking soda all
over the bottom of the pan and then add just enough water to cover the mess. Let this soak over nite and in the morning all you have to do is wash your pan. This works everytime for me,

put baking soda and water in it and boil it. hopefully that will get it off.
Try soaking the burned area in vinegar for three or four days, then scrub the area. It may take several times to completely clean up.

Use and SOS scrubby. I did the same thing in my mother in laws pot.
If you go into www.Faultless.com, there will be a banner that flows over the top showing products. Click on Kleen King and it will discribe its benefits. There is a store locator to find a distributor. Kleen King will clean stainless steel pans and sinks, etc. You might try that. I have used it on my stainless steel pans (the bottoms when they get dark) and it works for me.
I have used vineger in some of mine. Just poor enough vinegar in the bottom of your pan to cover the mess then let it set for a about an hour. If some of it still does not come out then put a little more vinegar in the bottom until it disolves all the black in your pan.
Hi E., try CAMEO stainless steel cleaner, found at pretty much any store. My mom has used this since I was a little kid( i'm 39) and I now use it on all of my sainless steel stuff, it works great. Just get the bottom of the pot a little damp and sprinkle some of this stuff on and start scrubbing. It might help to put some water in the pot and bring it to a boil before hand to help loosen the gunk up. This may take a few tries before it's all gone. It also works on aluminum and makes your stainless steel sinks look great. I was a single mom for many years with two kids so I know how you feel about one more stupid mess to clean up. Good luck!

When I do that, and it's often, I put some water in the pan and boil it off. When the water starts to boil I use a plastic spatula to scrap the bottom. It usually works. If it's really stuck, add some baking soda to the water. Hope that helps!

Soaking it in baking soda and water (simmer that on the stove for a few minutes) should help, and then, if it's still hard to remove, you can make a paste of baking soda and water, and use that as a scrubbing agent. This always works for me.
You can try the Magic eraser, or a steel pad. But I have to agree with the oven cleaner.
Try a little ketchup on it, let it sit for a few minutes then try a little scrub. It helps with the bottom of pans too.
magic erasers! The name brand, not the off brand. I have not used it on anything that has not worked. Everything from crayon and sharpy perminant marker to the grout (not sure abouth that spelling) inbetween tiles. Even coffee stains.And there are no harsh chemicals
If your oven has a self cleaning mode, I put my broiler pan after I use it and get hard stuck on stuff in the oven and put it on the self cleaning mode and it burns every thing off into ashes and all you have to do is wipe it off. You might try that with your pan. It beats having to scrub.

My Dad once burned popcorn in the bottom of mine... it has been two years and there are still remnants of the burn marks. I scrubbed with steel wool until as much came off as would... It never affected the taste of my foods, I still use it. It sems to have gotten less over the years (which kind of worries me as to where the stuff went) but it doesn't worry me too much... either don't let it bother you or throw it out... it won't scrub off (not with the amount of elbow grease I have to give any way :)
Use the powder form of Barkeepers Friend. It's very gentle. I have stainless steel pots and the manufacturer recommended it. It works wonders on the pots, tea stains in my sink and on my tea kettle as well! You can find it at grocery stores or Target or Walmart.
Try simmering some water and a couple of teaspoons of cream of tartar, It should come off.
Did you try a Brillo or SOS pad?
LOL! Who hasn't done that??? I've saved lots of things with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. They work miracles! They are abrasive so it may scuff the finish. I decided that was better than throwing it out! Good luck!
It's going to stink, so put the fan on over your stove, but mix about 1/2 white vinegar and 1/2 water in your pan, make sure there is plenty in there to cover the burnt stuff, and to boil for a while....then boil it. Vinegar shouldn't hurt your pan, but it should get it loose. Try having a putty scraper or something like that (the scraper from Pampered Chef work great, too) to scrape it off, once the water has cooled down enough for you to work in it.
