How to Sell a Puppy

We got a mini dachshund from a great breeder less than a month ago only to find out our toddler is allergic! Its been 3 weeks and we've tried everything that our allergist recommended (shampoos, allerpet-d, etc.) but our son is still breaking out in hives. so we've decided to sell the puppy but i'm not sure how to do it. craigslist wont let you sell (only adoptions) but since we have spent about $1000 on the puppy so far (vet exam, shots, etc.), we want to get at least some of the money back although i know we'll take a huge loss. any ideas where/how I might sell?? thanks!!

Update: I can't sell back to breeder b/c we had the dog shipped from Iowa! We're in CA and it would be $300 to ship him back :(

What can I do next?

If you used a professional breeder (and it sounds like you did based on the amount you have spent) you might want to contact him. I am not sure if you will get all of your money back, but many reputable breeders have a serious commitment to making sure their puppies/dogs end up in good places, which is not always something that can be determined when you sell to an individual via an ad. Good luck. I am sorry that you will not be able to keep your pup.

You may not be able to sell the dog to the breeder but they may have connections to help you find a home for the dog in your area. Just a thought....You may have a very hard time selling this dog. Because of the economy there are more purebred dogs in shelters and rescue groups looking for new homes. (BTW -don't read judgement into this, just what I see as a fact in our society/times right now). I was just at the SPCA yesterday and they had a purebred mastiff, dalmation, and a few other purebred dogs. Sorry this didin't work out for your family.

Work through your Vets office...they would know people interested in puppies. You may have to realize that they best thing to do for this dog is to give it away to ensure that it has a good home.

That's hard. I'm sorry it didn't work out for you. If the breeder won't work with you maybe you should consider just trying to get some of the money out of selling him in the local news paper. I'm sure you could get $500 for him. I know it's not what you paid, but your most likely not going to get back what you paid.

Would a family member help you out by either paying you some for him or even just giving him a home where you could still visit him?

I agree with contacting the breeder for advice/buy back/referrals for potential owners.

Check with your breeder - some breeders have in their contract that they will take the puppy back or assist in helping you find a family for the dog. It may not be your vet money back, but the basic cost of your puppy refunded would be good. Some breeders make you sign an agreement that you will not rehome your dog without contacting them first.

Craigslist will let you charge a "rehome" fee. I don't think you can realistically expect all of your money back, like you said, if they wanted to spend that much they would just go to a breeder and get to pick whichever they want from the litter. I've seen some pretty high rehome fees. I would just post your story - that you've only had this puppy 3 weeks and that you're spent over 1k and you're looking for a rehome fee of (this amount).

You can try Petfinder.com. I don't know the rules they have for listing but that is how I got our cat and a friend bought her dog.

Any good breeder will let you return the pup to them.

edited: Have you tried any allergy meds? Claritin does a very good job controlling my nephew's dog allergy. You can try petfinder or maybe take out an ad in your local paper or contact a local breeder they might be able to help you. I would expect to only get back what you paid for the dog not the amount of the vet bills. Also you have only had the pup for 3 weeks how many times did you bathe it? You could have dried out its skin causing more dander and more problems for your child.
Sorry I just read your other question. I did not realize you were the same person that had asked before. Did you actually get a confirmed positive test for dog allergy. Does your son only get hives when licked or is it just being around the dog that does it? The only people I have known that get hives get them from being licked if that is the case you could just keep your son and pup separated until you can train your pup to only give kisses on demand. How did the giardia test go? was your son positive? It can cause hives in certain people so just another thought. I would just hate to see you get rid of the pup without being 100% positive that its the pup.

The first thing that comes to my mind is selling him back to the breeder if the breeder will take him. Also putting an ad in the paper or putting up flyers around the neighborhood may also work. Try word of mouth too. Take puppy on many outtings, many different places where dog lovers frequent and see if you get any takers. You may also try placing flyers up around your local pet store too. I hope this helps. Poor little one and puppy too. You may want to try another kind of dog, one with hair and not fur. I think bichon's or yorkies may fill this bill.
