My husband was laid off at the end of the year and going on 6 mo. without a job. He started applying for jobs months before the layoff. We've applied to hundreds of jobs since then and nothings come though. I had to clean out our email because we're almost at 90% full with all the submissions. I like to keep them to refer back to companies/jobs we've sent his resume too. I had to delete the bulk of them though. We have over 125 submissions just in email from Mar-present. One interview he went on they had over 200 people to apply for the job. He's signed up with a couple of temp agencies as well. He does draw unemployment, but time is winding down and we don't want to wait until the last min. for him to find a job and get in a bind. He has tried to go to some places to take his resume, but most of them tell him that he has to apply online. We go through all the sites; careerbuilder, monster, hotjobs etc...Any advice or suggestions on other ways of searching?

08/11/09...hubby still unemployed. Had to get extension on unemployment (so glad he was able too, what a blessing) By him being home during the summer, we were able to save a bundle on childcare. Still searching!!

Hi there. We're going through the same thing. I am a stay at home mom and it has worked out very well up until now. My husband is going on two weeks since he lost his job. It's a tough job market these days... we're finding. Him and I are both working on getting our real estate licenses. I am doing on line courses through the Austin Institute of Real Estate. Their website is www.austininstute.com . I have a sister that works in Austin as a Licensed Real Estate Agent. She is an apartment locator. Right now, business is booming for her and everybody else who does apartment locating. The turnaround in commission is much quicker. Even though the sales part of real estate has been in a slump, the rental part is really thriving. Anyway, I hope this information may be of some use to you. Check out the website for Cintas. Cintas is a company with several divisions, they were first well known as the uniform people, delivering uniforms to companies weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly. They now have divisions in facilities services(floor mats etc), first aid and Safety, training(CPR, forklift, first aid etc.), document management and fire. It is a great company and usually they require high school, a degree doesn't hurt but isn't required. My husband has worked in the first aid and safety division for three years loves it. I worked for them too until I had my son. They love military men, the GM of Houston is ex-military and several of the managers are as well. He can just go online and see what is open, pay is good, very competitive, I get to stay home and we are comfortable. Anyway, I highly recommend the first aid and safety division if anything is open, but any position in the company is good. Hope everything works out great for you guys!
Has he looked into DoD positions? With prior service, I'm sure the military could use him as a civilian. Just a thought...
The only other thing I'd suggest is a temp agency. My dad had the same problem, was unemployed just over a year. He looked for jobs in several different states! He has like 30 yrs experience and a college degree and was in the Navy for awhile, so you'd think it'd be easier for him to find a job, but it wasn't! He now has a temp job that may turn permanent, so he's still searching just in case.
Your hubby might end up having to take a minimum-wage job, just for some sort of income.
The best of luck to you both, I've seen how difficult it is in this economy =(
If you are located in the Valley, check with the temporary agencies and Manpower.
They have jobs that pay better than minimum wage and can turn into full time.
I believe that they will see him; he should have some kind of preference because of military.

Look at schools or education systems. State agency jobs. They all should have websites with listings. You can at least get better benefits. They might not pay great but steady hours and it is a job for money until something else comes along. What I tell new college kids interviewing at our company -- look hard, take the advice given and in the end you might need to take a job that isn't what you want but gives you experience. Keep looking for the job you want.
