Husband Snores

Hello Ladies-

Over the last several months my husbands snoring has gotten louder and harder for me to sleep with. I have even had to ask him to go sleep on the couch a couple of times!! He has always snored a little - but nothing that was bothersome to me. But lately it takes me a good hour to actually fall asleep. He falls asleep in 3 minutes flat, literally - then the snoring begins.

I poke, push, and talk to him to wake him up and ask him to change positions, hoping this will help - but it does not. I have heard that sleeping on your back is the worst for snoring, but it seems like no matter what position he is in, he still snores! This does not affect his sleep at all, he does not even know he does it. Although it is bothersome to me - and I end up getting less sleep.

Now, I know there are about a hundred over the counter products you can buy, but I am very skeptical that any of that stuff works. My question to you is this:

Have you dealt with a snorer, if so what did you do about it (besides boot them out to the couch - I do not like doing this - I want my man in bed with me at night)?

Are there any over the counter things that really DO work?

If he goes to the Dr. (family practice) is there anything they can do to help?

Last is - my husband and I are young (in our 20's) so I know it's not an old age factor - he is also in good shape, so it's not because he is really over weight or anything - he does not have any medical conditions or take any medication for anything. I am stumped and could REALLY use your help.

I would appreciate any advice you all have! Thanks so much :-) Restful Sleeping!

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your helpful replies. I am SO silly to not have thought about allergies being the problem. Both of us have had an extra difficult time with allergies lately! I should have thought of that.

So, heres the plan of attack. We are going to see if we can get the allergies under control first, and see if that helps with the snoring any. Along with the breathing strips, only b/c its cheap and worth a shot.

Along with treating his allergies, we have decided to make an appt. with an ENT. It would be very helpful to have a good evaluation and make sure there is nothing else going on. We will then see if the ENT wants to refer him to have a sleep study is done.

I am very lucky that my husband is more than willing to do whatever is needed to make sure his health is taken care of. I will help him out by making the appointments :-)

Last but not least. I certainly will NOT be 'smacking' my husband - I have respect for him and this is not something he can help or is doing to annoy me. I also will not sleep in a different room or have different bedrooms all together. That may be necessary for some people, although if it came down to it, I would rather wear earplugs and turn on white noise to drown out the snoring. No way do I want to sleep in a different bed from my husband. I love him dearly and that is our time to cuddle and drift off to sleep and wake up in the morning to eachother. Anyhow, we will get this snoring thing figured out before long.

I will update you all again when we get some results. Again, thanks for the help!!

I know you posted this a while back, but wanted to give you another hint! Many times people snore more as they get older because the soft palate (the roof of the mouth in the back) has become weak. It is completely made of muscle. When it is weak it "collapses" so that when you breathe in and out while lying down it vibrates. So he needs to strengthen his soft palate. How do you do that? The best way is to gargle several times per day. Have him try that for 2-3 weeks and see if it makes a difference.

Hi A. & Hubby,

I have a problem with sleeping too. Mine though is breathing. I stop breathing. It's called sleep-apnea. A friend of mine recommended I try MaxGXL for my other health issues. Amazingly, as a side effect though, it helped my sleep! Now I sleep through the night and my husband doesn't panic. It did help with my other health issues too! Hi A.,
I am a Registered Nurse and Natural Health Professional who is married to a man who had suffered with chronic sinus problems since childhood, he snored so loudly that the house shook!!! Several years ago we discovered the 'Neti Pot'...a small spouted pot which is used to lavage the nasal cavity with warm normal saline. With daily use of the Neti Pot, allergens, dust, and other particles that accumulate in the nasal passages are washed out allowing the body to heal itself. Miracle of miracles, my husband no longer suffers with sinus problems and the snoring has stopped!!! You can find Neti Pots, in Health Food Stores. Directions for use are included in the package. Here is a hot link to more information: <http://www.healingdaily.com/exercise/neti-pot.htm>

My husband's snoring was about to wreck our marriage. I was on the couch every night. He couldn't sleep either knowing he was keeping me up.(If it only happens during parts of the year, it could be allergies, but if it year round, it is probably sleep apnea). It isn't just fat people who have apnea.
He had a sleep study. He wears a cpap to bed and hasn't snored a lick since! We now have a newborn( a different reason for not sleeping). Obviously we are back in the same bed again!!! Horray! A neurologist is the Dr. to see.

I just read your post, I do not know if you had tried this one or not but it will help even while using the strips. There is a product out there called a netti-pot. It is used with a saline solution, or the salt that comes with it. It is used to cleanse the nasal passages and it takes about 2-3 minutes. You may want to look into if your husband is willing to try it. It was also featured on the Oprah show and has lately been in Prevention magazine along with the Dr.Oz show on Discovery health. You may purchase them on-line or at a whole foods health market.. Good luck!!

Something my husband has just discovered that has changed the quality of life for us both as it really helps his allergies and he hardley ever snores anymore!
It is a sinus rinse (or some people call it a netty pot).
You can get it at your localk drugstore and you shoot water & some packet you mix with it up your sinus cavities and it completely rinses it out and it helps sooo much w/ allergies! My husband doesn't even have to take allergy pills any longer anmd he rarely snores anymore. (he use to keep me up all night). Give it a try. Oprah has it on her show and it really works! (FYI: The bottle rinse is easier to use than the netty pot).

Hi A., I work for an ENT, and I see this all the time... There are many factors to snoring. It can be a deviated nasal septum, large tonsills, or enlarged turbinates. It wouldn't be a bad idea to go to a ENT specialist and get some CT's done.

My husband has always snored. But he started snoring so loud that he had to sleep in another room and even then he would wake us up. He went to the doctor and had a complete physical. They discovered that he has sleep apnea. He had to go to a sleep doctor over night and be tested while he slept. They figured out that he was stopping breathing for over a minute at a time, hence the snoring really loud when he was trying to catch his breath. He could have died from it. Now he has a special breathing machine and a mask that he wears on his face when he sleeps and no more snoring! :o) Tell your husband to have a complete physical. Loud snoring can be the symptom of other more serious problems.

A. B - I hope you read this as I know you've received a number of responses....PLEASE hear me. :o) I went through the same thing with my husband when he was just 35 - but the snoring ordeal started WAY before that - so we were in our 20's too. I went years without good sleep before FORCING him to go to the Dr. He went......and was tested for sleep apnea. Overweight or not - this can happen and is serious. After being referred to a Neurologist...he was tested at our home and we found that he was NOT getting good sleep at all. I thought too that he was falling asleep in an instant - when really, the sleep he was getting was actually depriving his body of the rest that it needed. He was also losing oxygen in his blood to the tune of 62% as opposed to the normal 97%+. He has slept with a BiPap breathing unit for 5+ years now and sleeps WELL...........and SO DO I! I actually like it - it's like having "white noise" all the time. It's really a serious matter and if you haven't already, you might want to consider this. :o) Hope this helps! J.

Before going to your M.D., consider these recommendations from a leading M.D. in the nutritional medicine arena:
"Air pollutants cause a tremendous amount of oxidative stress in the respiratory tract and in turn, the body. When you add the most severe cause of oxidative stress to the body--cigarette smoking, the nasal passageways and lungs are literally under attack. Still, God did not leave us defenseless. He created a sophisticated and elaborate defense system against such attacks on our respiratory system."

He goes on to write about the cilia that brush the border of our respiratory tract and the mucus that helps keep it clean. With allergies, there is a chronic (long lasting) inflammation. He recommends nutritional supplements to give your body the optimal defenses against allergies (or any condition/disease).

But not any supplement, here's why:
"One of the most difficult aspects of being involved in nutritional medicine is the fact that nutritional supplement companies are basically an uncontrolled industry. The FDA looks at supplements like foods. Nutritional companies are really not required to put in their tablets what they say is on their label. The quality of products that is placed in most supplements is of inferior quality and their manufacturing processes are generally suspect. People who have read my books or used this web site will sometimes go out to their local chain stores, drug stores, or health food stores and try to put together my recommendations on their own. The frustrating thing about this is that they think that they are doing what I am recommending only to either not get any health benefits from their efforts or very marginal results. "

The rest of the story is too long to paste here but USANA Health Sciences has MANY accolades for its superior quality and purity of products. My family and I have been using this product for 5 and 1/2 years with excellent results. We have helped many other people with various illnesses. The idea is that these unsurpassed nutritionals allow your body to be at its absolute healthiest to reverse conditions the body is fighting. Dr. Ray Strand has documented cases in his private practice of helping hundreds of people with heart disease, diabetes, cancer, celiac disease...the list goes on...

Please contact me at ____@____.com with questions.

It's worth looking into!!! My husband and I are both doctors and would not recommend anything else.

Hi A.. The only thing that has helped in my situation with my husband (we've been married for almost 20 years) is Mack's ear plugs. They are silicone and block out most all sound. Since my husband refused to get checked for allergies, etc. I had already moved out of our bedroom. When our relationship was getting very strained I tried these as a last resort and moved back in. Now I have been wearing them for probably 5 years. Just make sure to throw them away after 4 or 5 days. You can buy them at Walgreens, Kroger or Walmart.

Hi A.:

I think the appointment with an ENT specialist is your absolute best bet. I have a friend who, at 35, just had his tonsils and adenoids out because of sleep apnea and horrendous snoring. It really helped him tremendously. (You didn't mention whether your husband still has those little respiratory devils.)

I had to laugh at your response to someone who apparently suggested that you swat your husband or sleep in another room. Great marital advice, huh??! You stay put, and so will he!

Tips for living with a snorer:
-Get dust mite/allergen pillow case covers for all of your pillows, an allergen mattress cover (cotton, not plastic!), and wash bedding regularly.
-Snore strips (Target sells generic for a few bucks cheaper)
-White noise (I run a fan 365 days a year)
-Ear plugs (for when it's really bad)
-***Make sure he's getting a proper amount of sleep! My husband snores 10 times louder when he's sleep deprived. Quality of sleep can be affected by snoring, and spouses like us waking them to change sleeping positions.
-Make him see the doctor! It's important to rule out sleep apnea or any other medical problems. My husband has narrow nasal passages and has been perscribed a steroid to help his snoring.
-I know it's hard to do, but go to bed 1/2 hour before he does. I find if I can fall asleep first, I sleep through more of his snoring.

Good luck. I sympathize with ya!

I am ever so skeptical to even add this, but I think I should for not only you but others just as a precautionary measure.

My husband, also in great health but 46, started snoring like a bear. We were on vacation last May and confined to a hotel room and I had just had it! I told him when we got home he must go to the Ear Nose and Throat doctor. I prompty scheduled his appointment and by September he was scheduled for a tonsilectomy, uvalectomy & septoplasty.

During any surgery with tissue removal, the doctor must send samples to pathology. The doctors were shocked when the pathology came back cancerous. Not only cancerous but a fast moving cancer - squamous cell carcinoma. Since then, our lives have not been the same since. We have 2 children 7&8 years old and it has taken a toll on them as well.

I would suggest a visit to the ENT doctor before trying anything over the counter. The doctors know best!

I did not see your original post.. but got the follow up...anyway.. I don't know if anyone mentioned this to you or not. I discovered in all my health perusings, that before the advent of big Pharma companies Dr.s were successfully using large amounts of vitamin C for allergies. Much more than our RDA or what most physician recommend and allergies were completely irradicated for most people. I've tried it myself when I cut the grass or something, if I start to have an allergy attack I come in and take somewhere between 3-6000 mg of vit C and within 20 minutes the attack stops. For those with persistent allergies getting a regular regimine of Vit C can fix the underlying problems and get rid of allergies. If you are interested in this approach you can go to a website called doctoryourself.com-look on the left hand side for the list of topics and find Vit C and Allergies and read up.. it is pretty amazing. Could save you lots of money at the Dr. as well.

Be careful he is just snoring and not experiencing episodes of sleep apnea. My husband was in his middle 20s, great shape, etc. He snored horribly!! His dad found out he had sleep apnea, so after months of me begging he finally went to a sleep clinic. They said he stopped breathing 200+ times in 1 hour. He now sleeps with a c-pap machine (blows air into his nose to keep the airways open) and the snoring is gone. This is very dangerous. People can die from it and it also leads to heart disease. Hi A.,
I too dealt with the same snoring problem with my husband that you do! And we are also in our 20's, so it wasn't a overweight issue etc. A few years ago, I started on a nutritional supplement called Reliv. It had incredible results for me & my health issues - that the doctors couldn't diagnose or fix - so I encouraged my husband to try it for a few months, just to see what it might help him & his body with! And the last thing I ever thought it would do would be to help him with snoring, BUT it did! within weeks his snoring had significantly decreased. I hardly noticed it! Now, I do not hear it at all! (it has been over a year since he started). You may want to look into it: www.reliv.com
read some of the health testimonies & read about the products & their ingredients. It is truly amazing how our bodies can heal themselves when given the proper food to do so!

Hi A.,
I read all of the responses and you got some really good advise. My husband's snoring kept me awake for over 10 years unless I was able to fall asleep before he did. Only after I kept falling asleep at the wheel on the way to work and finally had a fender bender did I see my own doctor. He said I had developed sleep apnea and I went to the sleep study.

It was kind of interesting actually. They hook you up with wires on your head, face, and chest and an oxygen monitor on one finger. All of the wires are gathered to your stomach area into a wide belt that you wear. Then the belt is hooked up to the machines they use to monitor you all night. The belt helps because if you need to get up for the bathroom you just unhook the belt instead of all of those wires. There was a tiny wire thing taped just in front of my nostrils too. I guess it measured how much air was going in and out. There is nothing painful at all. After the first sleep study diagnosed my apnea, then I had to do a second one wearing the CPAP mask. A CPAP is just a quiet machine that blows a steady stream of air, but you can breathe out just fine. It helps keep the mouth closed and forces me to breathe through my nose. They play around with the adjustments while you sleep to find out how much air pressure is needed for you. Then you get your own CPAP and finally a good night's sleep.

Anyway, after my husband saw how well it worked for me, he finally conceded that maybe he did snore and got one too. We both look like a couple of spacemen or something when we go to bed, but we sleep great.

My husband also suffers a great deal from allergies. We recently found out about the best air purifier that is made anywhere and got one. My husband was skeptical and thought I was wasting our money until we ran it for a whole day. It is amazing! We don't even have those little floaties you see in the air if the sun shines through the window any more. I would be glad to put you in touch with the company that makes these. They are sold in all of USA, Canada, and some other countries too. If you tell them you heard about it from ANGIE HAS ANSWERS at Mamasource, they will give you free shipping.

Even if you don't get one like mine, be sure you get an air purifier and not just an air filter. THey are not the same thing. My purifier will also help keep your girls from catching so many sniffles too.

Also we found that if we cut his intake of diary products that cut the snoring, too.

A sleep study is suggested if he has those episodes, that are sooo yucky, where sleep apnea occurs. That snore, then stopping, and then that really ugly loud gasping breath and loud snore!

Best of luck!

First thing: If he is diagnosed with sleep Apnia, hopefully he will NOT have a uvalectomy. I went to a dr who did not test me, just quickly did the surgery on me. I've suffered ever since.
Second: My hubby snores at times. When this occurs, I use ear plugs. Not too tight, just enough to muffle the noise, yet loose enough to hear the kids, if needed.
Third: If my hubby's health causes his snoring to be especially loud for a few nights, I sleep elsewhere. Everyone gets their rest and it's only temporary!

I suddenly started snoring - A LOT -- I suffer from sleep apnia (I spent the night at the sleep clinic at Kennestone Windy Hill to be diagnosed) I would literally quit breathing over 30 times an hour. No matter how long I "slept" it was never enough. Now I use a C-PAP machine at night to force air into my nose so I do not quit breathing. I quit snoring and now get the rest I need. ~ J. ~

I will make it short since you have already gotten a lot of advice, but my husband used to snore pretty bad and started getting head aches. He was refered to a neurologist and sent our for several different tests here and there... the one that did the trick was a sleep specialist. He had sleep apnia (apnea?) pretty bad... so don't forget to check that out too...

I too, have a husband who snores like a freight train. He tried various remedies, like breathe right strips, but they only worked for a short time. Someone at work suggested it might be that he is somewhat dehydrated, and that he should drink a huge glass of water right before going to bed. Simple, yes, but it actually really worked! His snoring (when he remembers to drink the water) is much more manageable (you can barely hear it) and I can sleep sooo much better now!

Hey, I'm really new on here (a week actually) so I didn't see your request. My fiance has the same problem and I have spent my nights on the couch. You may want him to see his doctor for an apnea checkup. But in the mean time some things that we tried that might lend some insight. First of all, the strips didn't work for us. Having him clear out his nose and phlegm before bed helped some. But the one silly little thing that helped the most was to prop him up with a few extra pillows. Worked like a charm. When his allergies are really bad we prop him up and try to get me asleep before him by a half hour or so and we both get our needed sleep. Hope that helps some.

I know you posted your question some time ago, but I am new and just seen it on the webpage. I felt compelled to respond because I KNOW first hand how you feel.
We have 3 kids and most people ask how b/c my husband snores so loud and we do not sleep together at nite because it is so bad. To make a long story short, when he was younger his family lived in a 3 flat and the people on the third floor that slept above him, HEARD him snore even though he was downstairs in a different house!!!! After years of arguments and our kids getting older and wondering why Dad sleeps in the basement (which I too can hear him upstairs in our bedroom)he finally went to the doctor. After a sleep study they found that he wakes up 20 to 25 times an hour and does not even know it. They diagonosed it as sleep apena. He always wakes up tired no matter how long he sleeps, he can fall asleep sitting up with all the lights on, the baby in lap, t.v. on, etc. etc. He instantly is asleep and has no clue what he sounds like. The kids wake up and go in another room if they fall asleep with him. The only way he believed me was after I starting video taping him sleep so he could hear the deafening sounds he makes as he sleeps.
After the doctor told him that something was wrong and that the decibals that he snores at are very high, I thought I would never sleep alone again. That was a year ago and even though we purchased the cpap machine (very pricey) which is suppose to help him learn to breathe properly while he sleeps and stop the choking, gasping, sounds along with the snoring, he rarely used it and still sleeps in the basement, leaving me alone or with the kids!
NOTHING over the counter will work if your husband snores really loud and I mean where you can't fall asleep. But if there is nothing physically wrong then the products might work. I would not know b/c mine has always snored and just is not concerned about it I guess. I have been told that there are surgeries a snorer can have to stop it, but there is no guarantee. I have lost so much sleep and drove myself nuts trying to deal with it b/c it does not seem normal to sleep alone, but it is not worth losing so much sleep anymore. Plus, he sleeps so SOUNDLY that he never got up with the kids, NEVER, b/c he can not hear them. Monitor to his head, right under his ear, turned up all the way, never moved even if the baby was screaming. Baby in the same room crying, no luck either. So I do know how it feels and you begin to think he is doing it purposely and then arguments occur.
Fix it now if you can, don't let it go. If you can't sleep, tell him and make sure there is nothing physically wrong. We just hit the 30's and he is not overweight either, no medications, nothing out of the ordinary, and I have been told that sleep apena is common. I just wish it was not a common thing in my house!!!!

My husband snored for years and like you, I refused to sleep in another bed (actually, there were times when we had company and they complained because they could here him snoring all the way at the other end of the house, so it would not have done me any good to sleep elsewhere)! He would fall asleep instantly at night, but was not getting the good sleep that I thought he was. Then he got to where he was exhausted during the day and would fall asleep all the time. We finally asked the Dr. to do a sleep study and found out he had severe sleep apnea. His Oxygen level was dropping to 53% (Normal is 97% or above)which is a deadly level. The Dr. said he was very lucky he had not died in his sleep. Now he is on a CPAP machine which has done wonders. The first night he slept with it, we both slept better than we had in YEARS. Him, due to the increased oxygen level in his blood and me because he did not snore. He has so much more energy now and instead of sleeping all the time on his days off, he is out doing yardwork, fishing, playing with grandbabies, etc. Have your doctor do a sleep study, because as I stated before, Sleep apnea can be deadly. My husband was very willing to try anything as well, and it has worked wonders~ Good luck!

Please have your hubby go to the doctor. Don't try to "fix" this yourself, it could be dangerous. If your husband has sleep apnea it could lead to other very serious health issues, like heart disease, diabetes, liver disease, problems with concentration, falling asleep at the wheel...in other words make sure it is not this first. Covering it up with over the counter products might help you sleep better for a while, but what will it do to your husband if he has sleep apnea that goes undiagnosed and untreated. If it is allergies, your doctor should be able to help with this also. Proper diagnosis and treatment is a must when it comes to breathing issues...which this is. I deal with these problems everyday, I am a respiratory therapist. D.

Welcome to my life! Wow, sounds exactly like my house at night. My hubby went to an ENT, had a sleep study and was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea. Unfortunately, his ENT said that usually, they recommend weight loss (usually happens in overweight people), but my husband isn't overweight. He also said that he didn't feel like surgery would help him at all and that the only thing he could do is use a CPAP machine. Well, we paid the money, got the machine and it collects dust on my husband's nightstand because he won't use it. The only time he even tries to is when I pick a fight about it and then it is off within an hour. So, I have given up. The only thing that seems to work for me is to go to bed before him so that I have time to fall asleep before he does. Otherwise, I just have to try to sleep through it or kick him out. I am 5 months pregnant now with our second, so there will be no more nights with ME on the couch!

Bottom line, have him go see an ENT. They will probably order a sleep study. Hopefully they can come up with something that will help him. And, if they order a CPAP, I hope you have more luck than I have getting him to wear it.

Good luck and I hope you get some good sleep soon!

I also work for a Chiropractor and we have many patients with similar problems that chiropractic has helped! You can also get them at Walgreens pharmacy, or most likely any pharmacy. He did not snore at all after using the Neti Pot. It is called "Sinucleanse" and is with the cold and sinus products.
He was tested for allergies and came back allergic to most everything, but is not willing to commit to once a week allergy shots for 2 years. The Neti Pot does work. I hope you will try it. :)

OK, it really does sound like he has apnea. My husband is a sleep lab technologist, and his job is running studies for patients to test for this condition. There are several sleep labs, but you do need a doctor referral. You need to let him know, maybe by doing your own research, that this is a serious health problem that can affect your heart and brain health. Men tend to think that it is not a problem, except for their wives complaining about it, but it really can be problematic! But there are good solutions and lots of options to try! So, he does need a sleep study. Find out who your dr would recommend, and then research the lab. They will probably do a study one night to make sure that it is apnea, and then another to see if he improves with a CPAP machine. There are SEVERAL different CPAP machines, that they can allow him to try at the lab before one is purchased, so make sure that he insists on trying them on. They should be comfortable, and once he sees how much better his life will be with real, restorative sleep, he should keep up with it...if it is a good machine witha good fit!! PLEASE let me know if you have any other questions!! Several members of my family are in the sleep industry, so I will be happy to get any information that I can. Take care and good luck ~A.~

This may be too late but I would consider trying to do something without medicine, such as cleaning the nasal passages with something like a Neti Pot or, even easier, go to any grocery store or pharmacy and get Simply Saline. It is sort of like nose spray but irrigates and moisturizes the nasal passages. During the winter (and flu season) I use this once a day and (knock on wood) haven't had any problems. Also, as someone recommended, run a humidifier when you sleep and you can even add some eucalyptus essential oil to it, which should help with breathing.

I'd like you to consider also it MAY be sleep apnea. If it is, over time it will cause heart damage, so if you don't get relief from the snoring with other means, then have him checked out by a sleep doctor/sleep clinic. My husband got real bad before we knew what his problem was, but he's had it probably all his life.

The other recommendation is a good quality air purifier.

I went through extensive allergy testing and one of the things I'm allergic to is dust mites. You can buy a mattress cover at Target or Wal-Mart that will help with that. Also, you might consider getting the harmful products out of your home that contain formaldehyde, lye, and other products. Most of what you're using now probably contains these toxins. You don't have to touch them to be affected. Products used in your automatic dishwasher will put these products into the air. We switched about 5 years ago and have seen a big improvement in our allergies. Feel free to call or email if you have questions.

My husband is a home respiratory therapist and sets up CPAPS for a living. Alot of his patients have found that their snoring problems are fixed by the machine and the noise is somewhat like a fan so it acts as a filter for street noise. His patients also wake up more rested because snoring does not let the snorer or the spouse to get a restful sleep. I know they all say that the masks are cumbersome, but a good therapist will work with your husband to make sure it fits and is comfortable. I would definitely have a sleep study performed if the allergy meds and the strips do not work. (They are a cheaper quicker fix) No doctors and tests needed to begin. I wish you luck. Both my parents snored loud enough to keep my brothers and I awake all the time.

Hi A.! I could not believe your post when I saw it! I was thinking last night that I needed to find a place on the internet to post the same question. I am the one that has to go sleep somewhere else. I hate not getting to sleep with my husband in our bed but I have no choice. My husband tried the Breathing strips and they did not help at all. Either his snoring has gotten worse in the past few months or I am sleeping lighter. I told him the other day that there was a Dr. in Houston that was on a show that is supposed to be one of the leading ENT's in Houston and that as soon as our insurance changes I am making him an appointment. He actually said okay. I don't think snorers have a clue to how loud they are. I am glad I have someone to vent to that can relate! I highly reccomend going to the Dr. I had sleep apnea and after having nasal surgery I do not have it anymore. I am finding out with my husband that I have to make the appointment and tell him he is going. I did that with the dermatoligist and he went. It only took me 15 years to figure this out! I have begged and cried for my husband to go to the cardioligist for a check up because his dad died of a heart attack at 40 and his mom has had hear trouble. I am going to have to make him an appointment for that to. For my sleep apnea I went to Dr. Kevin Browne in San Antonio. I was extremely pleased with my surgery. Also somehow when I went for a follow up visit the conversation came up about how much I owed him with my high deductible and he went and told his office to cut it in half. That doesn't happen every day. Good luck and if you ever want to vent you can email me at ____@____.com

I really sympathize. My husband's sleep study tech told him he sounds like a Harley. The nasal strips, Brookstone pillow, throat spray, allergy meds, and humidifier didn't work for him. He walked out on the CPAP fitting three years ago because he couldn't stand the feel of it. He's done two dental pieces through our dentist that helped significantly, but he still had much rarer, but definite non-breathing moments. He's on his fourth day with a new bi-pap machine. He doesn't seem thrilled -- he's woken two or three times a night to mess with it -- but I LOVE it so far. I got the best sleep I've had in ages this week.

Hi, A.!

I would recommend that you find a Dr who specializes in Sleep Medicine in San Antonio and have your husband go through a sleep study to determine the reason for his snoring. My husband had one done, and he has SEVERE sleep apnea (as does his mother). With more than 60 episodes per hour, he was at risk for a cardiac arrythmia (an irregular heartbeat) that could cause cardiac arrest. He now has a CPAP machine that he goes to bed with that provides the oxygen his body needs to keep him from snoring. The machine also improves the quality of his sleep, so when he wakes up, he "feels" like he got the rest the clock says he did.

Please understand that I'm not saying that your DH has (or may have) sleep apnea, but it was the diagnosis we got with the sleep study under a QUALIFIED doctor!! (I had a sleep study done 2 years ago....my primary said, "Yeah...you've got 'mild' sleep apnea", and gave me Lunesta to try! Sleep aids do NOT work with apnea (which means (to stop breathing). I had a 2nd sleep study done, and got a TOTALLY different diagnosis, and am getting much better results with the correct meds.)

When you're looking for a Sleep Medicine specialist, you may get better results at WebMD.com than through your insurance company, because our insurance company wanted ME to tell THEM what kind of doctor I was looking for! (I had no idea which specialty to look for.) You can enter "Sleep Medicine" in the search engine. Let me know if you need some help with it.

Hey there! I can totally relate to the snoring. At my age, I have experienced both a Mom with a snoring husband AND a husband of my own that snores. (Let's not forget the father-in-law that lived here for 5 years, either!)

This is a very simple approach to the snoring ONLY if you are sleeping with him {{{smile}}} This is a non-drug approach and it has worked for me for over 20 years! Get him to lay on his side (yes, you have heard that before) BUT, you cuddle up behind him...and lay your hand gently on his upper arm (bicep)...and gently stroke it. This interrupts their sleep pattern, not enough to awaken them, but to change their breathing AND it stops the snoring! I have two daughters who will verify it works for their hubbies as well. I don't get uptight and keep nudging him ..... in fact, this promotes a calm for myself to relax and a closeness I have come to enjoy.

I will point out: our spouse's snoring may be exacerbated by our own sleep hygiene deficiencies. If you are not ready to sleep (mind in overdrive...too much caffeine, etc.) you might want to consider your part in this sleeping arrangement. If I work extra hard in the yard and my back is hurting me, I have trouble sleeping, therefore, I am less likely to reach deep sleep and be bothered by his snoring.

All solutions are not for everyone, but perhaps this might work for you!! {{{{cuddle up}}}}

In my case I am the one who snores the loudest and have tried the strips but after a few nights up to a week, my nose begins to get raw from pulling the strip off each morning. I have gone to using the snore liquid and spray before bed. I can't say that it has completely eliminated my snoring, but it has helped to keep the number of nights and the severity of the snoring down. Hope it helps.

Your husband needs to let his doctor know about this. It could be Sleep Apnea...and that can be helped. It is something that is not healthy for your husband. The first major step in ridding oneself of Sleep Apnea is to loose weight...but that isn't all. Your doc will set your husband up at a Sleep Disorders Clinic, they will do some overnight tests, and find out if that is the problem...There is helpful breathing equiptment for this...and all of this will help our hubby to better health.

I noticed you said you would also see an ENT...that is also smart. That specialist will see if there is anything else that might be causing this.
So...have your hubby get this checked out.

Allergies can also be the culprit. Check out to see if hubby is allergic to down, dust, etc, as your pillows and mattress may be the problem...

Thanks for posting, and allowng me to advise...(I have Sleep Apnea...got treated, am loosing weight, and breathing better...and my hubby is thrilled with me, that I'm healthier, and he's getting lots of good sleep NOW.

I had the same problem but I was the snorer. I finally went to my Dr. and he checked me for sleep apnea. Turns out I have a severe case of it. It can be treated and should be as soon as possible because it can lead to other health issues. Many men suffer from it.

Hi A.
My husband and I used to have the same problem ! What helped us was a visit to a homeopathist who put my husband on a diet. Basically it entailed giving up all dairy and wheat based products. Unfortunately this is a very wide variety of foods and drinks - beer included. BUT it works. If my huband has one beer, or a cheese sandwich he snores that night.... its fairly drastic but it worked for him / us. I would also like to add that my husband also had sleep tests and was told he had sleep apnea. He was given a CPAP machine which was an absolute nightmare and although it made sure he received enough oxygen at night time it kept us both awake with the dreadful noise. Since going on the diet earlier described he has not suffered from apnea or ordinary storing. He also prior to the homeopathists advice, had an operation where a part of his epiglotis ( the wiggly thing at the back of the throat ) was removed.. this was extremely painful and did not work at all. What it does do is allow him to choke me often on food. I do not recommend this operation. I wish you luck.

I don't know if this will help or not. I work for a wellness company and they say sometimes breathing problems, allergies, eczema, psoriasis, etc. is caused by the cleaning products or body products that we use. They often have formaldehyde in them!(which is hard on the body, obviously)Maybe if you changed all your hshld. products to natural ones maybe that would help. I know my friend's little boy was totally cured just by doing that!-no more allergies, nebulizers, etc. Just an idea, no guarantee that it will work, but maybe worth a try. The company I work for sells about 400 products-all natural, so if you decide to try,let me know and I can get you hooked up.

Hope your hubbie is better soon!

I too deal with a loud snorer. I was concerned because of the way he snored. My mother had sleep apnea and my husband snored the same as she did when they found out. We did a sleep study and sure enough my husband also has sleep apnea. His throat is to small and it colapses at night so he is not getting enough oxygen and tends to snore loudly. He got a machine however the machine is not the right one for him so we have to get another. I am sure when we get the right one he will be fine. You might want to get a sleep study done because sleep apnea is a terrible thing to let go. It can cause lots of medical problems if you don't catch it. It can also be very fatal. I know you are young but it can effect anyone even little ones. Please get your husband checked if the snoring doesn't get better. It is worth it.

My mom and brother both have sleep apnea and the CPAP machines have literally been life savers. My husband is a snorer, but it's really only unbearable when he either has allergy problems or is just really exhausted. Most of the other times I can wiggle him out of it enough to get to sleep. Could he be having sinus problems since it's gotten worse over the last several months? We've noticed since moving here that our sinuses are much worse than previously and instead of having drainage, everything just kind of dries out and gets stopped up. Even though we don't notice it during the day, we tend to have more breathing problems at night. Maybe try sinus meds first and then if that's no help, go to a dr about sleep apnea?

Does you husband have sleep apnea? Does he startle awake, snort while sleeping, have "night sweats", or periods when his breathing is not regular? Does he doze during the day or while watching tv? If so, I would definately look into having a sleep study done. There is a strong correlation between snoring and apnea... and apnea can occur at any age and in otherwise healthy people. However, untreated it can compromise a persons health in the long run. If he DOES have apnea, there is the possiblility of him sleeping with a C-PAP (constant positive air pressure) that would virtually alleviate his snoring, he would feel more rested, and would result in a better life for both of you.

The other suggestion I have is to look into a "Pillar Implant" by Restore. It is a set of 3 very small implants that are placed by a doctor in the soft palate. This is the part of the throat/mouth that causes snoring when it vibrates. The procedure is very minor, only requires a local anesthetic, and has no recovery time. Unfortunately, I don't think insurance will pay for this. It would certainly be worth looking into....The price may not be too high for a good nights sleep. Results are VERY successful! Good luck. I would love to know if either of these work.
Laura
I am a 38 year old mother of 2 (an 11 year old son and a 3 year old daughter) with obstructive sleep apnea. I sleep with a c-pap nightly. I am in the process of getting the pillar implants (which are currently being studied for treatment of apnea)

Wow, I'm glad I read this--got some new ideas! I've been married to an athletic, fit snorer for 30 years. Both of his parents snored, so there must be an hereditary factor here. I would start out in bed with him and eventually leave for the guest room, a couch, or (once we had kids) climb in with one of my girls when I was woken up by his fits and starts of noise. I got him herbal anti-snoring tablets, which worked for awhile, throat sprays, nose strips, allergist appointment (he uses a nasal spray)...nothing worked. I'd roll him onto his side, but over time that didn't make any difference plus I had to wake up to do that many times a night. When he suggested going to Hawaii for our 20th anniversary, I was so worn out that I cried at the thought of having to be in the same hotel room with him! At least when travelling with the girls, we'd have a separate room for them and I could sleep in their room. He went for the sleep tests and was told he has mild apnea and it was only a problem for the person he was sleeping with!! Thanks a lot. Not an option for everyone, but we moved and I have had my own bedroom for the past 5 years--hallelujah! We start out in the same bed a few times a week, then I kiss him goodnight and head to my own room. Heaven. I read recently that the latest in house designs has a "snoring room" attached to the master bedroom--great idea (just so it's sound-proofed)!

Has anyone suggested sleep apnea as a possible cause for the snoring? My husband was diagnosed with it a little over a year ago. It will require a visit to your family doctor, who, if he or she decides it is necessary, will set up a sleep study. Your husband would then have to sleep overnight at the place where the sleep study is held (probably the local hospital). Since I couldn't go with him, I'm not sure what all it entails. Results from the sleep study would go back to your doctor, who will then relay them to your husband. If he indeed is diagnosed with sleep apnea, he will probably need a CPAP machine. My husband has one. It makes a low humming noise, but it allows me to sleep MUCH better. And best of all- no more snoring!! It would be worth checking out. Good luck!

A visit to the doctor to see if he has sleep apnea would be good also. He will have to do a sleep study test. He will have to go to the sleep lab and get wires connected to him ( like an EKG-not painful) and they monitor him while he sleeps. Hope this helps.

Hi A., I just read all of the replies to your inquiry about snoring. My husband also has sleep apnea. He has been using a cpap machine for 14 years. When we first met, his snoring was so bad, and he was always walking around exhausted, and cranky. TOTALLY SLEEP DEPRIVED. He was drinking huge amounts of coffee in the morning and chain smoking cigarettes, just to get some energy to start the day. He never was a smoker before. He did a sleep study, and sure enough, he had sleep apnea. The night he spent at the hospital was the first time in years that he had a real night sleep, since they used the cpap machine to test the pressure levels, after they determined he had sleep apnea. He was a new man. He gave up smoking without a thought. Never smoked a cigarette again, and just had the occasional cup of coffee. He had energy and was happy again. Kind of like when your child, finally sleeps through the night.

Seriously, please consider a sleep study BEFORE you go the allergy route. You will save yourself a lot of time and energy, and your husband will have the obvious condition, dealt with immeditately. Allergies are sometimes impossible to pin down, whereas sleep apnea can be diagnosed in one sleep study. Do yourselves a favor and opt for that first. Chances are he does have sleep apnea. It is so common. A friend of ours, had a seizure while sleeping in a chair in the afternoon. 3 months later, he had one while sleeping in the night. They thought he had epilepsy, and treated him for that. I asked them if anyone had tested him for sleep apnea, and sure enought the had not. When they tested him, he actually DID have sleep apnea, and that is why he had seizures. Drops in blood oxygen may trigger seizures- even in the absence of epilepsy. The body is starving for oxygen. When you have sleep apnea, you stop breathing many, many times an hour. My husband stopped 52 times an hour. This is a HUGE stress on the heart.

It is a serious condition that can be treated fairly easily, with the CPAP machine.

Please check this first. If he doesn't have it, then go on to the allergy route.

Just wanted to let you know that I had a co-worker who is currently undergoing some kind of surgery treatment for his snoring. They told him that his tongue is large and they are "shaving" off some of his tongue and maybe some of his throat to make room for the air to travel better. His snoring was so bad it was affecting his sleep. He said the surgery wasn't as bad as he thought and he only has a pretty bad sore throat the first couple of days after the surgery, then he feels fine. He said he might need about three. He's had two so far. He said his wife is also getting a better sleep.

Your husband might not have the same problem, but my point is that he should see the doctor to determine if there are medical issues like my co-worker's problem. My co-worker had most of the same things going for him so he couldn't figure out why he was a snorer either.

Hope this sheds some light. Good luck with everything.

You've had a lot of good advice. Allergies may be a culprit, and these can range from dust mites (try new pillow, washing pillowcase every other day in hot water)and particulate from heating systems, and also food sensitivities. Alcohol, even one drink in the evenings, can also cause structures in the throat to relax a bit and cause snoring. (This definitely causes it in my husband!)

Also- consider a humidifier, sometimes the dry indoor air of winter is irritating to the mucus membranes- causing more mucus and congestion. Good luck!

My husband also snores really loud. We have tried everything possible to get him to stop. We have tried the strips, CPAP, the sprays, and so on. Nothing worked with him. He is in his 30's and in great shape. So the doctor said the only thing left to do was for him to go to the hospital and let them break him nose and rebuild it and there would only be a slight chance that the procedure would even work. NO WAY! SO what we did is now we have separate rooms. He has his bedroom and I have mine. I love it! We love each other very much and have been together for 11 yrs 3 months and have been married for 8 yrs 6 months. I wouldn't have it any other way and now we both get a good nights sleep.
