My husband is turning 40 this year and I would like to throw him a surprise birthday party. He turns 40 in December so I was thinking about throwing the party sometime in November. Anyone know any good places that are reasonably priced in the Olathe, Overland Park or Lenexa area?

What can I do next?

We have done a couple of 40th birthdays at Tasso's Greek restaurant. Music, dancing, belly dancing, good food....has a feel of a wedding dance.

You could always have a surprise party at a hotel, have the party downstairs in one of the conference rooms, then get a room for the two of you to spend the night?

If you decide to go the route of having it in your home hire a personal chef to help you with the food. It will make the event special and wont brake the bank!

Whatever you decide to do he will love! My husband still talks about his 40th three years ago!

You could rent the American Legion Hall or something like that...it's on 75th Street in Overland Park. If you go this route than you'd have more control over how much money to spend on decorations, food, DJ, etc. Places like this do book quickly for all kinds of events especially wedding receptions so call asap to find out more information.

Pick his favorite restaurant and see if they have a "party room" that you could book.

We just did our own thing at home and still were able to make it a surprise party since I sent a him out with a buddy for the duration of the day and while he was away I put it all together. I gave my neighbors a heads up since we don't party that often like we did when we were in our twenties and I figured it could get a bit rowdy. And, since you have little ones you might want to enlist help from Grandma or a friend depending on how big your guest list is. Then I had his friend text my girlfriend when they were on their way home.

Other things I did...for party favors I had t-shirts made and burned cd's with his favorite songs on it. Food I prepared myself (just appetizers) and the cake was a bunch of mini red velvet cupcakes put together to make the number 4-0. I also had a couple pictures of him blown up into life size stand-up cardboard prints. We had an open bar but you could just make it easy by filling buckets with your favorite beverages.

My only advice is to keep it simple so that you have fun too and don't get stressed out. Good Luck!! I'm sure he'll be totally excited about all your efforts.

Oh, and if you want to save money on invitations just use...evite.com. I'd probably shoot for November as well since the month of December every family is really busy with their own obligations during the holiday season.

Anyway, have fun and check out birthdayexpress.com and other local party stores for fun themes. There are alot of different ideas to choose from besides just "over the hill". You could even google "40th birthday parties".
