If you are still nervous about honey, I would try this recipe perhaps with Agave sweetener instead, look for it on the baking aisle.

my son is 15 months old and has a bad cough..i have heard that you shouldn't give chldren under two honey so i was wondering if it would be safe to give him hylands cough syrup since its made with honey.
First of all thanks to everyone who took the time to answer my question! My son is much better now. about the highlans cough syrup.. i did not give him any. His doctor said she did'nt recommend to give him over the counter medicine. Instead i tried teaspoons of honey and lemon which totally helped.

I believe that the restriction on honey is only until 1 yr old. I think that is better than any cough syrup you can get. Hope this helps!
Sounds like you have plenty of honey and cough syrup advice. One non-cough-syrup option that helps my little guy (13 mos) with a cough is a tiny coating of adult Vick's on the bottoms of his feet. Sounds weird, I was skeptical when my mother-in-law told me about it, but it really seems to help. The bottoms of their little feet are tougher than their chests, so the Vicks doesn't irritate the skin. Also, their feet are close enough to their noses that they can still breathe in those soothing fumes and get some relief. Hope your little guy feels better soon!
I've given my son hyland's cough syrup occasionally since he was 1. It's certainly not going to "cure" a cough, but it does seem to sooth his throat enough to sleep (I usually administer at bedtime when he needs it). Frankly, it's probably not much different than a honey-lemon juice mixture, warmed a little...but it makes me feel like I'm helping a bit. Our doc said it's basically just straight honey. Doesn't include any of those chemicals that make cold medicines unsafe for kids, so I'd try it.
Kids over the age of 1 can handle the possible risk of honey having botulism. If your son has any history of being allergic to bees, I would hold off just to be on the safe side. The last thing you want is an allergic reaction on top of a cold.
If he doesn't have any history of a bee allergy, we also like Children's Chestal Homeopathic Cough syrup. Its a honey-based cough syrup with homeopathic remedies in it.
I think the honey thing is ok after 1 year old. I would ask my pediatrician before I gave my little one anything like cough syrup though.
Honey isn't the issue, it is the cough syrup. Don't do it! Call your pediatrician for other recommendations.
My understanding is that you can't give a child honey until they are 1. If you aren't sure, call your doctor and ask. Beyond that, does the Hyland's any age listing on it? Usually the bottles will list dosage by age and/or weight. The minimum age listed is a good rule of thumb for how old a child has to be to use it (although that isn't always the case). Final though - call a local naturopathic doctor. They are more likely to have accurate information that an allopathic (traditional medicine) doctor. If you don't find one in the phone book, google "naturopath" and your city name.
Best of luck,

You aren't SUPPOSE to give children under the age of 12 months; HONEY, SHELLFISH, PEANUTS........ these are all VERY common and normal allergies to allot of kids!! That is why you are not suppose to. If he is not allergic to them and you KNOW it for a FACT then go for it!!!!!!
I tried Hylands, and it caused no relief for my little guy. Everything in there is natural...... which is good if your eating a Hamburger, lol..... but not with Meds.....not all meds are good either.....geez......... It might work for him though, it just didn't for my little guy .... everyone is different. I hope it works for yall. :) :)
Hi, M.. My sons doc told me honey is fine after the 12m mark. My little guy is eating honey now & LOVES it! I wouldn't worry about giving it to your little one.
For my daughter, we make a vergin hot tottie. Hot water, honey and lemon. Works great and she loves it. I make it kinda sweet and give it to her twice right before bed. PS our Ped. said Honey was okay after 1.
Check with your doctor but i believe the research says that no cough/cold medicine works for children under 2 or maybe it's 6. I can't recall. I'd make an appointment with your doctor just to ensure it's not something else.
Honey, I believe, is only an issue under the age of one -- due to botchalism (sp?). Personally, I love baby vics -- its essential oils of ecualyptus, lavendar and rosemary. It's great.
I gave my son honey after 12 months. After that point, their intestines are developed enough to process any botulism spores that may be present in the honey (infant stomachs aren't ready yet- they are at risk of botulism).
I've recently (finally) found buckwheat honey at Target, of all places. It is their store brand, Archer Farms. It tastes pretty strong to me, but my 2 1/2 year old son loves it. A few teaspoons seems to soothe his throat a bit. I'd avoid the cough syrups based on the medicine they contain. It's not worth it.
Just remember to keep pushing fluids!
Hope your son feels better soon. 'Tis the season- colds and flus are no fun!
You shouldn't give children under 1 honey, not 2. Honey is fine for your son now. And Try straight buckwheat honey (1/2 tsp) - it works great!
Since he's over a year (ask a nurse, but last I knew it was a year) he should be okay w/the honey in cough syrup. I used regular cough syrup for my under 2 boys if they really needed it though & they're just fine.
Hope he feels better soon!
Unless the age limit has changed, any doctor I have been to with my children has said the age to wait til to give honey is 1. You should be fine giving it to your 15 month old. Good luck! Hope he feels better soon.
Make it a GREAT day!

Honey isn't the only issue with giving him the cougy syrup. Very young children can metabolize medicine differenlty than older kids and adults. Just cutting the dose down may not be the way to go. Ready the bottle. If it says to contact a doctor for kids under 2, do just that. It's better to make a call and be safe :)
Hi M. - your son should be fine with honey since he is over 12 months. If he has a history of having lots of allergies, ask your doc first about administering honey for cough. The doc might have a glycerin based alternative that would work for you.
take care!
It's actually safe to give kids over 12 months honey. I haven't used to cough syrup but I love the teething tablets.
Honey is fine after 12 months, but cough syrup is not. There have been several studies that show that in children cough syrup is not really effective and can be harmful. According to my pediatrician, the risks are much larger than the benefits. Before you give a child cough medecine, talk to your pediatrician for sure!
